MOBIL 1is a fully synthetic motor oil. Acconding to Wilkpedia, this is :- "Oil consisting of chemical compounds which were not originally present in crude oil (petroleum) but were artificially made (synthesized) from other compounds. Synthetic oil could be made to be a substitute for petroleum or specially made to be a substitute for a lubricant oil such as conventional (or mineral) motor oil refined from petroleum. When a synthetic oil or synthetic fuel is made as a substitute for petroleum, it is generally produced because of a shortage of petroleum or because petroleum is too expensive. When synthetic oil is made as a substitute for lubricant refined from petroleum, it is generally to provide superior mechanical and chemical properties than those found in traditional mineral oils."
Basically synthetic oil is better than the old mineral oil for newer engines, but not always recommended for older engines. Synthetic oil has now caught on, and has actually been made by Mobil (exxonMobil) since 1974. This oil is recommended by most of the major car manufacturers.
5W/30? What does that mean? Right, it is perfectly simple:- 5 - is the viscosity at low temperatures. W - means it complies with the requirements for winter conditions. 30 - is the viscosity at high temperatures. So now you know, Gents you may now explain this to your mates in the pub and get street cred, Ladies, you could do the same but I would recommend you stick to talking about kittens or knitting! Sorry.
This oil is NOT recommended for aviation engines, or for any two stroke motors.
If you intend changing your own oil, (and I recommend it, as you will kniow it has been done right) make sure you do it when trhe engine is hot, then you will get rid of all the gunge that solidifies when the oil cools down.
As for the container, it comes in a full five litres, in a plastic can, a lot of the cheaper oils are sold in smaller one gallon cans. These Mobil containers are also easy to pour, many "universal" cans are used for everything from engine oil to detergent, and are prone to spliiages.
Many engines over two litres need just over five litres nowadays, so you need to make sure you have the extra pint or so before you drain the old stuff, this can be very annoying, as you could end up catching the bus to the local motor discount shop for a small bottle.
MOBIL have a website of course, and have just launched the first Mobil 1 WAP site bringing Mobil 1 to people's mobile phones. Users can download a range of video clips, wallpaper and 3D animations. Also, if you are into games, try the Mobil 1 Fantasy Grand Prix Racing. Site details are :- mobil.co.uk/
