Review of U.S. Robotics 56K Voice Faxmodem by andycharger

Advantages: Easy to install, compatible
Disadvantages: size, price

Now you all know im on broadband at home but it has not always been the way. No. Going back a year or so ago, I was using a trusty 56k External Modem. I say trusty because it was a good servant and it is still downloading at my mums house without any problems. So what is it? Well, for those that dont know, its the little piece of hardware that sits between your computer and the telephone socket. Its used to decipher the phone tones into information ...
...which are actual parts of the computer that slot in and need to be phyiscally installed, and, some people have "External" modems so they can just plug it into a connector without the need for upgrading or installing bits in the actual computer. This modem is External so it has the advantage that anyone who can plug in connectors can be using this modem in minutes. It also has the benefit that it can be moved to other computers musch easier. Good modem for everyday
Review of 3Com Courier V Everything 56K by iharsh

Advantages: Easy install, excellent support, high velocity, comfortable use
Disadvantages: Too high price, large sizes, looks not so good

The new modem 3Com Courier V Everything 56K as two drops of water is similar to the predecessor - modem U.S. Robotics Courier V Everything. On appearance there are only a few differences: instead of an inscription "U.S. Robotics" on the upper and face board of the modem the inscription "3Com Courier" has appeared and the form of the switch is changed. On it the external differences of modems are finished. However of internal differences is significant ...
...circuit of a galvanic outcome from the phone line rushes in eyes. Generally, the system of the interface with the phone line (DAA) has undergone significant modifications. Instead of the transformer, amplifier and codek TLC320AC01 is applied two-crystalline chipset Si3014 (linear part) and Si3021 (digital interface) firm Silicon Laboratories. The microcontroller of the modem has remained former. It is "grandfather" of all processors Intel S80C186EB25. ... Read review

Old but still the best
Review of U.S. Robotics Faxmodem Fax / Modem by richard_millar

Advantages: Good all round modem with fax capabilities
Disadvantages: Buttons are a bit small

...you need for the 56k U.S. Robotics Faxmodem. In this it will install the software you require to use your modem as a fax machine. A good feature I think. The modem also has a volume control on the side as well as the software volume which is very handing. It is connected via the com port ans is incredibly simple to setup. I have not used all the software as I quickly upgraded to a broadband modem. However when I was using this I found it very good ...
...24/7 and I never had any problems using it and it never overheated. I would highly recommend this modem for anyone still using dialup to access the internet. However I would say why are you uising dialup. You get a free modem on broadband now. ... Read review

A DO NOT BUY
Review of 3Com Sportster Winmodem ISA by Spiders

Advantages: none
Disadvantages: bad design, cheap, unflexible, OS dependant!

what i'm about to say is i beleive true for just about any winmodem on the market. simply don't even consider buying one! they are unreliable, and unflexible! first they ONLY work in a windows (95-98 maybe Me, NOT 2000 or poorly) so don't even consider buying one if you're on linux or Mac. (where do you think the WIN-modem came from...). Second they aren't really modems they're just a emulation of one, meaning that when you're connected to the internet ...
...the modem is done by the CPU (and if you have a buggy connection, or a slow system this can really have an noticeable effect on you're machine's performance! especialy with games...) now for this product in perticular, well. when i bought it, it was advertised as being a 56K winmodem, but don't be fooled this is not so... it is actualy a 33.6K modem with a new driver. in practise you don't really see the difference since all the processing is done ...
