Past Mortem
Review of Past Mortem - Ben Elton by CPTDANIELS

Advantages: Excellent story well written
Disadvantages: Bit gruesome in parts

Background: When I first saw this book in the crime section of my local book seller I was confused. Had the book simply been misfiled as surely it should be under humour? But having read the front and back covers description I was wrong. So I was interested to see what style Elton employed in writing a thriller. About the Author: Ben Elton was born in 1959 and is a multi-talented man. Who seems to succeed in all he tries. His writing includes ...
...Blue Line. He is also a celebrated stand up comedian. He has so far published 12 novels and two plays. This book I am reviewing was written in 2004. Synopsis of the novel: A gruesome murder is discovered by the Police. That of Adam Bishop a man hated by most but brutally and painstakingly tortured. A list of people who would like to see this bully dead is endless. The method employed by the killer is very precise and Inspector Newson and his side ... Read review

Flip Side
Review of The Other Side of the Story - Marian Keyes by Essexgirl2006

Advantages: Easy to read, good characters.
Disadvantages: Not her best book.

...cup of tea and within the genre itself there are some good and bad books. Marian Keyes, in my opinion, is one of the better writers in this genre – her characters are realistic, flawed, but not unlikeable. They are never the glossy haired, beautiful, intelligent, perfect specimens you might find in some more formulaic novels. They are regular women (yes, her lead characters are always female) who are not perfect looking, or amazingly intelligent, ...
...are slightly interlinked. In the beginning we get some quite healthy chunks of each character, almost a novella. Latterly, they each have their turns as more conventional sized chapters. Our heroines are thus: Gemma lives in Ireland and is an event manager.. The love of her life, Anton, left her to move to London and took up with her ex-best friend Lily. Gemma is somewhat bitter about this, but has other things on her mind when her dad leaves her ... Read review

A Subtle Saturday
Review of Saturday - Ian McEwan by amyjane1

Advantages: Careful considered writing
Disadvantages: Not much of a plot

...man goes about his routine Saturday with a few strange events thrown in. There's a bit of drama with the Baxter character, but even that doesn't seem to amount to much. if it's drama you are after this isn't the novel for you. The strength of this book lies in the little characteristics of everyday life (ok, as everyday as you can get for a neurosurgeon living in a massive house in Central London!) that are described in painstaking, observant detail. ...
...stop and have a 'thoughtful moment' as I pondered the passages to myself. I thought he dealt with the feelings of Henry to his Mother and also his daughter well, for me this was the strength of the book. I'd recommend this to someone who enjoys a read that is well written, not especially exciting, but a glimpse into the life of a supposed intellectual family and some good moments in the book ...
