Review of The Other Side of the Story - Marian Keyes by Essexgirl2006

Advantages: Easy to read, good characters.
Disadvantages: Not her best book.

...cup of tea and within the genre itself there are some good and bad books. Marian Keyes, in my opinion, is one of the better writers in this genre – her characters are realistic, flawed, but not unlikeable. They are never the glossy haired, beautiful, intelligent, perfect specimens you might find in some more formulaic novels. They are regular women (yes, her lead characters are always female) who are not perfect looking, or amazingly intelligent, ...
...are slightly interlinked. In the beginning we get some quite healthy chunks of each character, almost a novella. Latterly, they each have their turns as more conventional sized chapters. Our heroines are thus: Gemma lives in Ireland and is an event manager.. The love of her life, Anton, left her to move to London and took up with her ex-best friend Lily. Gemma is somewhat bitter about this, but has other things on her mind when her dad leaves her ... Read review

The Future is Most Definitely not Bright.
Review of The Road - Cormac McCarthy by nickyturnill

Advantages: Compelling and thought provoking Pulitzer Prize winner.
Disadvantages: Overly simplictic and impersonal language

...published in 2006 and won the prestigious Columbia University Pulitzer prize this year. Cormac McCarthy, an American writer, born 1933, has written many other books including his first novel The Orchard Keeper, which was published by Random House in 1965, All the Pretty Horses (1992) and No Country for Old Men (2005). The Road is the first of his books I have read and I read it in conjunction with my recently joined book club. The book generated ...
...we realised it had won the Pulitzer Prize. ‘The Road’ is set in a post-apocalyptic era in which the sun has been obscured by ash and the ground covered in its dirty residue. Most of world’s population has been wiped out. Murder and canabalism is rife because they is no longer any food supplies. The world is a dangerous place to be in. Being a central route The Road is particularly dangerous. The book deals bluntly and detachedly with tortour, canabalism, ... Read review

Babies everywhere but where there should be
Review of The Midwife's Tale - Gretchen Moran Laskas by sunmeilan

Advantages: Well-written, enthralling
Disadvantages: Left me sobbing for hours

...think perhaps it was because the title reminded me of titles such as The Abortionist's Daughter and The Timekeeper's Wife, neither of which I have read, but I keep meaning to. Whatever the reason, I'm certainly glad I chose it. It held my attention from page one and I read it quickly in two days because I so desperately wanted to know how the book was going to end - rare for a non crime fiction book. This is all the more impressive because it is ...
...help women through one of the hardest parts of their lives. One day, however, she realises that her job entails rather more than just helping new life into the world; it also involves bringing an end to the lives of babies that are not born perfect. Elizabeth is horrified and loses faith in her work. Shortly afterwards, the only man she has ever loved, Alvin Denniker, loses his wife to illness. Prostrated with grief, he cannot cope with raising ... Read review

A Model Book
Review of The Model Wife - Julia Llewellyn by mummy2harry

Advantages: Good story, good twists, entertaining
Disadvantages: Poppy did whinge a LOT

I'm forever browsing Amazon for the latest book releases to try to find something new that catches my eye, and I've been lucky lately because there has been quite an influx on new books on to the market this summer! As usual, I've been keeping my local library in business lol, and the latest one I've taken out is "The Model Wife" by an author I've not read before, Julia Llewellyn. It sounded good, and I looked forward to reading it, so here's the ...
...father of 3 Luke Norton. The two begin a relationship on the sly, and accidentally Poppy falls pregnant. Luke decides to leave his wife Hannah to set up home with Poppy but soon finds out life with a young model and their newborn daughter doesn't quite match up to his twenty-year marriage. Fast forward 2 years, and Poppy's fed up of being ignored and left at home with daughter Clara so looks for a job herself. Things are not rosy in the Norton garden, ... Read review

Man and Wife - Tony Parsons
Review of Man and Wife - Tony Parsons by Sue030

Advantages: Poignant, compelling, authentic, true to life
Disadvantages: Couldnt think of any

...be an excellent continuation of Man and Boy in that it shows how clearly that meeting the next love of your life is never the end of the story. Parsons highlights the problems asociated with "blended families" in an innovative and compelling way. From the first page, where Harry is describing his marriage ceremony to Cyde, you immediately feel drawn in, you could be sat with the other guests watching the ceremony. There are so many moments that make ...
...the end where Cyde does a pregnancy test and Harry states "...... perhaps for the second time in my life, I knew why I was alive". I for one got goosebumps all over. I loved everything about this novel, the characters were authentic and it gave terrific insight into a man's mind, which is clearly helpful if unsettling to any woman. In short, if you are a big fan of chick lit, but would like to read something from a "boys" point of view, this book, ... Read review
