Half of a Yellow Sun
Review of Half of a Yellow Sun - Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie by fionad86

Advantages: Nice book, good characterisation, interesting historical setting
Disadvantages: not an easy read, took a while to get through

I thought this was a good book, but not an outstanding book. I enjoyed the characterisation, which I thought was very good and made it all feel very human. I did however, feel that there was too much jargin in this book for the average reader. There is too much use of local dialect which some people may find enjoyable, but for me, this just slowed me down unnecessarily. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a fictional story based around ... Read review

For those who are searching
Review of Norwegian Wood - Haruki Murakami by aristocat

Advantages: an interesting book
Disadvantages: not the best by Murakami though

When I read Norwegian Wood I had already read The Wind up Bird Chronicle and loved it. So I was a little bit disappointed because I did not find in Norwegian Wood the fantastic and surrealistic atmosphere I found In the former book. Anyhow, Norwegian Wood is a book to be read by those who are searching. I find that the reader might sympathise with the characters... who are each one of them in search of their own life and personality. All of it with ... Read review

A Beautiful Affair Indeed
Review of A Country Affair - Rebecca Shaw by KarenUK

Advantages: Great story, excellent characterisation, easy to read and get into
Disadvantages: Have to wait a while for the next book

Being a fan of the author, Rebecca Shaw, I was pleased to hear she had a new novel out this year. I borrowed it from the library and read it in a couple of days. I am now looking forward to her further books in this new series. But first a bit of background… Rebecca Shaw has written eight novels set in a village called Turnham Malpas. I have read the first five of these so far (and written opinions on them!) and I’m planning to read ...
...has changed tack – from a quiet village based around the church and rectory to a more modern setting, centred round the Barleybridge Veterinary Practice. The main character in the first book of this new series – A Country Affair – is Kate Howard, a nineteen year old who begins a new job as a receptionist, while aspiring to become a trained vet one day. Shaw is excellent at bringing to life a wide range of realistic characters from ... Read review

The Devil Wears Prada
Review of The Devil Wears Prada - Lauren Weisberger by strange227

Advantages: Connection to Andrea and her life.
Disadvantages: Stereotypical of the fashion industry? Annoying at times.

...a perfect pool side read. The delightful (and not so delightful!) characters laid the ground work for a hooking storyline and an intense insight into the fashion industry. It was heartwarming, heartbreaking and throughout the book you can make a real connection with the main character Andrea Sachs, who you can soon find yourself relating to due to her down to earth personality in such a far fetched world. We feel sorry for Andrea, and feel hatred ... Read review
