A Smoking Read
Review of Once in a House on Fire - Andrea Ashworth by zoe_page

Advantages: An interesting, though provoking read from a quite unknown author
Disadvantages: Not a happy, warm-feeling-in-your-tummy inducing read

I used to be known frequently to turn up, and occasionally to work, in a place split up into lots of departments. Mine was one of the smallest which had its disadvantages (fewer people to cover shifts, harder to get time off exactly when you want it) along with quite a few advantages (fewer people to share all the chocolate with being an important one). The most major advantage, however, was having a manger who knew you inside out, especially when ...
...with gifts at Christmas, and last year, following numerous conversations at work about books, books, and more books (Helen being the only other member of staff who knows how to read from what I can tell) she really came through. My present, in case you’re really thick and / or haven’t guessed yet, was a copy of this book, which she’d read and though I might enjoy. She was right. The book is what I would call fact based fiction, ... Read review

A 'Horror' Novel for the Squeamish
Review of Midnight Champagne - A. Manette Ansay by Kukana

Advantages: It passes a few hours. Some light humour. Well-written.
Disadvantages: No plot to speak of. Rather flat characters. Nothing memorable about it.

I was given this book. It's not one I'd have bought, even second-hand, but as it was on one of my shelves and it didn't look too long, I thought I'd give it a go... The book is about a wedding. April and Caleb have only known each other for three months, and she isn't pregnant, so nobody can quite understand why they want to get married so quickly. They would like to have had a private ceremony, but April's parents insist that she should be married ...
...the shores of Lake Michigan for a wedding on Valentine's Day. It's not a religious chapel, but some of April's Catholic relatives are so determined to make the wedding 'valid' that they arrive early to decorate it with candles and a statue! Nearby is the Hideaway Lodge, where some of the relatives have booked to stay for the night. This is a lodge with a history of murder, suicide and even ghosts. Other visitors are there, and for one couple a domestic ... Read review

A Model Book
Review of The Model Wife - Julia Llewellyn by mummy2harry

Advantages: Good story, good twists, entertaining
Disadvantages: Poppy did whinge a LOT

I'm forever browsing Amazon for the latest book releases to try to find something new that catches my eye, and I've been lucky lately because there has been quite an influx on new books on to the market this summer! As usual, I've been keeping my local library in business lol, and the latest one I've taken out is "The Model Wife" by an author I've not read before, Julia Llewellyn. It sounded good, and I looked forward to reading it, so here's the ...
...father of 3 Luke Norton. The two begin a relationship on the sly, and accidentally Poppy falls pregnant. Luke decides to leave his wife Hannah to set up home with Poppy but soon finds out life with a young model and their newborn daughter doesn't quite match up to his twenty-year marriage. Fast forward 2 years, and Poppy's fed up of being ignored and left at home with daughter Clara so looks for a job herself. Things are not rosy in the Norton garden, ... Read review

Man and Wife - Tony Parsons
Review of Man and Wife - Tony Parsons by Sue030

Advantages: Poignant, compelling, authentic, true to life
Disadvantages: Couldnt think of any

...be an excellent continuation of Man and Boy in that it shows how clearly that meeting the next love of your life is never the end of the story. Parsons highlights the problems asociated with "blended families" in an innovative and compelling way. From the first page, where Harry is describing his marriage ceremony to Cyde, you immediately feel drawn in, you could be sat with the other guests watching the ceremony. There are so many moments that make ...
...the end where Cyde does a pregnancy test and Harry states "...... perhaps for the second time in my life, I knew why I was alive". I for one got goosebumps all over. I loved everything about this novel, the characters were authentic and it gave terrific insight into a man's mind, which is clearly helpful if unsettling to any woman. In short, if you are a big fan of chick lit, but would like to read something from a "boys" point of view, this book, ... Read review
