Can you keep a secret?
Advantages: Available in most high street book stores Disadvantages: The story does contain some sexual reference unsuitable for younger children
...the story is one that can relate to many teenage girls who's heads our full of secrets fit to burst.
I also think the main character of the book can act as a role model for girls as well!
I can't keep my mouth zip about this book as its a fantasic story that definately should be spread round fast! ...

A good read, better than the film
Advantages: Nice story, lovely setting Disadvantages: French words which I didn't understand!
I came across this book by Joanne Harris at a car boot sale, priced at only 30 pence, I bought it to read on holiday.
I'd heard of the film, and usually think the books are better so I decided to read the book and see.
I think this really gives you beautiful images of France in your mind when Joanne describes the little village in which the story is based in. This book really made me think about how you cannot run away from and avoid things all ... ...the story of a woman called Vianne Rocher a single mother, and her daughter Anouk. They seemed to have moved around all their lives and never really had a place to call home. Anouk is very young and is often heard playing with her imaginary rabbit Pantoufle. They move to a beautiful little village in France called Lansquenet-sous-Tannes and set up their own business (a chocolate shop!) at the time of lent, in place of a disused bakery, much to the ...

Wonderful as usual
Advantages: typical Allende, wonderfully descriptive and imaginative Disadvantages: Focused towards younger readers
Another classic on South American culture, this time the mysterious tribes which are dotted along the Amazon. Allende's writing puts you right into the heart of the Jungle, and right into the heart of South America.
Tribes hidden from the eyes of the moden world are slowly being destroyed by the lack of immune defences against common illnesses found in Western nations, leading to more conservation to keep them protected, but how do you protect them ... ...are puts them at risk.
This story tells of a doctors plight to save these indigenous tribes but as always there's a baddie out to destroy their good work.
Lovely easy read, good descriptive and powerful characters. Due to the writing style, its definately recommended for younger children. A great introduction to her work. ...

Chart Throb - X Factor to the power of 10!
Advantages: Topical with hilarious insight Disadvantages: Not his finest novel..
Think X Factor. And then double it. Elton, has covered similar topics in the past (Dead Famous comes to mind - parodying Big Brother and the constant dumbling -down on television these days) but Chrat Throb really takes it up a notch. There will be few readers who fail to recognise the Simon Cowell-esque character, ably 'performed' by Calvin Simms, and fewer readers who will not recognise the similarities between the X Factor show on television and ... ...to the method they use to divide the contestants into manageable groups: Mingers, Clingers and Blingers.
Ratings are everything as the contestants are abused in the name of 'great television' and the battle of the egos is played out behind the cameras as well as 'in front of a live studio audience'. As with all of Elton's work, the book is topical to the point of being visionary, and it is the wit and strong characters that carry you through the ...

6 stories held together by the thinnest of threads
Advantages: Some interesting takes on a future world Disadvantages: Dissapointing end to all 6 stories - a long read for little payback
I picked this book up from the library mainly because of the cover (shallow, I know!) and decided to take it home after reading that the book would be a tale of 6 inter-connected stories that span from the 19th century to the post apocalyptic future'. I feel my first warning should be that, whilst the book does indeed span the time it mentions, it's the smallest of threads that keeps these 6 stories connected.
The first story tells of Adam Ewing ... ...his home town of California. He's ill, and there is a 'blackie' stow-away but apart from this, not a great deal else happens. The story stops mid sentence and we are on to a new chapter.
Robert Frobishner, an English society boy, has travelled to Belgium to work with a renowned composer, Ayrs. Arys is moody and irrational, with an unfaithful wife (as Robert Finds out). Robert happens to be reading a book but only has one half......can you guess ...
