Fleming's Love Life Revealed
Advantages: Great characterisation Disadvantages: No sub-plot
I've got to admit that I have a strange attraction to Hornby's books, not because they are particularly well-written and certainly not because they are about some super-original theme, but rather because for most of the time, whilst reading his books, we can relate closely with his characters that he obviously moulds so carefully. To me and many more, this is one of the joys of reading, seeing how different people react in situations that we ourselves ... ...that 'High Fidelity' is just like Hornby's other books.
The book, which is written in the first-person, begins with Rob Flemming (the main character and your average chip off the old block) explaining to us his all-time, top five most memorable split-ups. These include both high-school sweethearts and the more serious adult kind relationships. It's easy to notice that there's a certain constant in all (but one) of these and that is.....yes you've ...

It's not the Time Traveler's Twin, that's for sure.
Advantages: Some lovely writing Disadvantages: Disappointing novel
HER FEARFUL SYMMETRY
AUDREY NIFFENEGGER
I am so disappointed!! When I read Audrey Niffenegger's first novel, "The Time Traveler's Wife" (reviewed at http://www.ciao.co.uk/TheTimeTravelersWifeAudreyNiffeneggerReview5862798). I thought that it was the best book that I had read for a very long time. So, when I found that she had a new novel out, I was very eager to read "Her Fearful Symmetry". Is this the same author who wrote ... ...the character quality that made her debut so enjoyable to read. Audrey Niffenegger knits together a tale of two sets of twins and how the younger ones learn about their mother and aunt. To be honest, it didn't take long for me to realise that not only did I not care about any of the characters but I wasn't even that interested in their histories or what was going to happen to them. When Elspeth Noblin died of cancer at 44, she left a large estate ...

I've been a bad little boy
Advantages: Nice character development Disadvantages: Bit slow for some people
...with all things Arsenal and how that obsession impacts upon basic human relationships. In How to be Good he is once again on the subject of relationships however this time the story is told from the female point of view.
I always imagine it must be a bit harder for a writer when they write from the perspective of the opposite gender however in this book Hornby makes a pretty good job of it, having said that as I'm male maybe he is just confirming ... ...book is about relationships and how people sometimes just accept the life they lead without really questioning it. It is not meant to be a feel good book, there is a lot of friction within the book however there are also some very funny lines as well which is one of the strengths of Hornby writing, the ability to capture the self defacing humour of the British. The main character Katie goes through a huge amount of soul searching in the book and ...

Head Over Heels
Advantages: Addictive Disadvantages: A bit over the top, so many things happen in one little village.
I find Jill Mansell books really addictive, this one being no exception. The book is based around two friends, Jessie and Lili, who live in a small village called Upper Sisley. Jessie is a single parent to Oliver, who is 21 and Lili is married to Michael and they have 3 children. Michael works in Dubai and Lili has suspected for a while that Michael has been having affairs while he has been away. Her suspicions are confirmed when he comes home and ... ...out because April's ex-husband has found out that he is still married and using her, so punches him in the middle of the local pub in front of everybody. April's ex-husband, who is now a woman.
As for Jessie, her life is turned upside down when Oliver's father, Toby Gillespie turns up in the village with his wife and family. As Oliver and Toby haven't been formally introduced, Jessie has a lot of explaining to do! When Oliver and Toby's daughter ...
