Lord of the flies..Is it for me.?
Advantages: Cleverly written Disadvantages: Sometimes hard to follow, need good understanding
LOrd of the flies, an award winning book, aknowledged by many, is a book a very few teenagers like. You start to appreciate the book, once when you have read it and start comparing the style of writing and the actual story. The characters involved are boys aged 7 -12 stranded on a desert island,, during the war, but the book is a microcosm of what happens in the real world, with adults and Golding expertly demonstrates the problem of power in the ...

Life of Pi: WInner of Man Booker Prize 2002
Advantages: Hilarious and witty prize winner Disadvantages: Everyone has already read it!
...a cargo ship on a life raft after the cargo ship he was travelling in was sunk. In the life raft with him is a hyena, a wounded zebra, a orang-utan and a Bengal tiger.
Once rescued, he tells his story which appears so fabulous that the doctors are loathe to believe a word he says, yet by the same token, have no alternative explanation as to how he could have survived.
Written with humour, and subtlty it is easy to see why this book was so widely ...

looking for jj, looking for a new life
Advantages: brilliantly written book to read Disadvantages: can't seem to be able to find the strength to put it down
Looking for JJ, looking for a new life, looking for a new start where no one knows her past, or her background, she's changed; she doesn't know what overcame her to kill her. "Three children walked away from the cottages on the edge of town towards Berwick waters. Later that day, only two of them come back…"
Jennifer Jones has been in prison for the last six years for murdering a girl who was bossy, and b***hy. Jennifer didn't mean to, she remembers ... ...years. She doesn't need papers, or prison to make her feel the guilt of it all, she already has it lumbered upon her back. That one spring day, where an accident happened, three girls went out to the woods, yet only two of them came back. Alice Tully is one of the only people that know who Jennifer is, and what she's like as a real person. Alice has a life, a job, a boyfriend who she loves truly, and friends who stand by her through everything. Alice ...

Lucky by Alice Sebold
Advantages: Addictive reading Disadvantages: Can be a bit disturbing to start off
...which you must read - Lucky is a harrowing, heart-wrenching book about the worst possible thing that can happen to a woman. Alice Sebold tells the raw story of her rape ordeal and her subsequent struggle for recovery with an honesty and warmth which is compelling. I have to be honest, when I first started reading this book it is a bit disturbing reading about someone's rape, especially the author but then you think that, that person must be so brave ... ...Alice Sebold for that.
Lucky reads almost like a novel itself at times, with gripping moments of suspense, particularly during the court trial scenes.
Alice Sebold was the innocent victim of an unforgivable crime - but she doesn't ask for our sympathy or pity in these beautifully written pages. She earns our respect and admiration for the courageous way she tells how the traumatic events changed and shaped her life; how the naive college student ...

Like Watery Chocolate
Advantages: quite decently written, a time-passer Disadvantages: dull and predictable
...was quite dull too.
Like Water For Chocolate has appeared previously under the title Like Water For Hot Chocolate. Whether the change of title had to do with the fact that a film adaptation was made, I have no idea; whatever the reason, this is a much better title. This edition has been translated by Carol Christensen and Thomas Christensen. Now, I can’t possibly comment on whether this has affected the music or passion of the writing but ... ...with some interesting results…
Like Water For Chocolate is a bit the Amelie of the written word, a manipulative, predictable but basically inoffensive offering. From the prologue it’s clear just what kind of book you’re letting yourself in for: “to the table or to bed, you must come when you are bid.” Each chapter (there are twelve, one for each month of the year… but not the same year) is given the title of a ...
