OMFG cool book
Review of The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time - Mark Haddon by
delc1234
Advantages: Everything, a different perspective
Disadvantages: None.
...at its classy humour and the whimsical behavior of the autistic child, Christopher really brings the reality of life back to me again. It has an unusual mix of arcane characters, introduce the ideology of a down syndrome kid and how he is often left behind in the far corners of society. I purposely left space on the shelf exclusively for this book. It's amazing content and how Mark Haddon shows us the world in the eyes of Christopher is just mind-blowing ...

get some kundera at bedtime
Review of The Book of Laughter and Forgetting - Milan Kundera by
melee679
Advantages: I feel a better person for having read this!
Disadvantages: I haven't answered the phone for days cos I was reading this
...to show us something about the world we live in and the way our lives are lived.
In places deeply political, as a natural result of the authors Czech background, the multiple story threads ebb and flow into each other, some sharing characters, all sharing the theme that the author is persuing 'The various parts follow each other like the various stages of a voyage leading into the interior of a theme, the interior of a thought'. It takes us through ... ...He relentlessly strips away the layers of consciousness to reveal something fundamaental about human nature. With Kundera it feels like the story is tangential. It doesn't matter what the characters names are, which city they live in, what matters is the universality of their experiences, the universal nature of humananity. Kundera offers us a glimpse of the answers to some dark political and philosophical questions, but in a half light, so we can ...

Hen Pen
Review of The Sex Life of My Aunt - Mavis Cheek by
MALU
Advantages: ?
Disadvantages: !
...answer for some (third) books the customer wouldn´t have thought of buying otherwise. If we wanted two books, we could buy two books, if we don´t want three, why do we take three? It´s the bargain mentality we all suffer from, that´s what it is.
Why ever did I take ´The Sex Life Of My Aunt´ by Mavis Cheek with me? I´m not ashamed of admitting that I read escapist literature occasionally, one can´t always be serious, can one? I thought this novel ... ...I´m very proud of the title! ´Chick Lit´ you know already, and you´ve just learnt ´Hen Pen´ from me. ´lit´ = ´literature´, ´pen´ = ´penmanship´ (the art of writing), you see? Why have I felt the need to coin a new term? Well, the main character is in her fifties and I felt that to call her a chick would stretch the term a bit. But apart from the age thing, the story falls into the category: a woman and her problematic relationship with two men, husband ...

The Handmaid's Tale
Review of The Handmaid's Tale - Margaret Atwood by
SoppySista
Advantages: Characters, Plot
Disadvantages: Ending
...and very discreetly adds to the meaning of Offred's words. It is easy to say that the book does nto always flow, and can be boring at times, however you should consider the fact that perhaps the story is simply to unbelievable for us to hear. Don't get me wrong, it's a great read, the ending a little unimpressive, but if you want to feel appreciative for all that you have, I would give this a read. ...

Little Sense of Wonder
Review of Seven Ancient Wonders - Matthew Reilly by
Soho_Black
Advantages: An engaging story
Disadvantages: Appallingly written
...to happen in the next seven days and so some people are very keen to find this capstone so that they can use it.
Unfortunately for them, the capstone was made in seven pieces and hidden away either with or in the Seven Wonders of the World. This wouldn’t be an issue, except that most of the seven wonders have either been broken up or hidden by the ancient Egyptians or even, such as in the case of the Hanging Gardens of Babylon, had never been found ... ...pieces to be found, if they can all be cracked in time. But even finding the pieces isn’t the end of it, as all the locations are heavily guarded with potentially lethal traps which have been waiting thousands of years for the unwary.
This would be tough enough for Jack West and his team of crack troops representing a group of nations as it is. Add in the additional pressure of the time frame, plus the fact that there are also far better equipped ...
