Kathy Reichs has been described as "another Patricia Cornwall." This is unfair on Kathy Reichs because, unlike Patricia Cornwall, Kathy Reichs is a real forensic scientist. Because, after all, Patricia Cornwall only ever typed up the notes of a forensic scientist, whilst working as a secretary in a pathology laboratory.

In Monday Mourning the skeletons of three young girls are found in the basement of an old building that is currently a pizza parlour. Yet a mysterious 'phone call from an old lady soon tells Tempe Brennan (the forensic anthropologist heroine of Kathy Reich's novels) that the building was not always a pizza parlour. Some years ago it was a very different type of a parlour. With a rather unsavoury reputation.

Detective Luc Claudel dismisses the three skeletons as historic and of no interest to the police. But Tempe, using some interesting techniques, is able to prove that Claudel is wrong. Dead wrong about that. For the case is a live one. Dangerously alive for all those concerned.

Something is troubling both Claudel and Tempe's lover, detective Andrew Ryan. There's something big happening. A major case that they cannot talk about.

Tempe's friend Anne has left her husband, the unlikely named Tom Turnip. She visits Tempe and soon finds herself as deep in trouble as Tempe as they struggle to find the history of the building housing the pizza parlour. First there was a mystery break-in at Tempe's home. Then there was the elderly owner of the building housing the pizza parlour, Richard Cyr. Why did Cyr hold out on Claudel? What did he know about the previous owner of the building, a Mafioso called Nick "the Knife" Cataneo?

It soon becomes clear that not only is the case of the three skeletons far from being cold, it is actually very hot. And very dangerous for both Tempe and her friend Anne.

The novel I well-written and I will not give the rest of the plot away. Suffice to say that I have only covered about 1/5th of the plot! I can heartily recommend this book. Is it based on a true story? Read the book and find out for yourself…
