With Mothers Day only a few days away I would have normally been wondering what to buy my Mother, since she seems to have everything, and no matter what I end up buying although I know that she will be grateful it will probably end up being relegated to the back of a cupboard. However this year I have planned early and this year I intend to give her a Jade Plant.
I have had a Jade Plant of my own for about four years now and over this time it has grown quite large. The inspiration for the gift came from a passing comment that my Mother made when she visited me a couple of months ago. Initially I had decided to take a cutting from my own Plant and nurture it until it was large enough to give to her but then I realised that it would make an ideal gift for Mother Day for the woman who has everything.
WHY THE JADE PLANT?
I thought that a Jade Plant would make an ideal gift because they are incredibly easy to look after. My Parents go away on Holiday several times a year, often for up to 3 weeks at a time and therefore House Plants are generally not practical for them since most Plants cannot usually survive this length of time without watering. The Jade Plant however can survive such neglect without a problem.
Jade Plants also do not need to be re-potted very often either. In fact these Plants thrive best when they are Pot-bound.
To say that my Mother is not very green fingered is a bit of an understatement to say the least, she has had various so called low maintenance House Plants over the years which she has managed to kill off, but my thought behind giving her a Jade Plant was based on the fact that these Plants really do thrive with minimal care.

All Jade Plants belong to the Genus Crassula which means "a little bit fat." This refers to the Plants thick, succulent leaves which have evolved specifically to survive in drought conditions. These leaves are soft and fleshy to the touch and have a dark green coloured smooth, waxy outer coating.
CARE AND MAINTENANCE
The cultivated form of the Jade Plant can grow surprising quickly if given the correct environment. Most House Plants will generally grow between one and five feet tall. They prefer a dry sandy soil which should be allowed to completely dry out between watering. During the Winter months they should only be watered every few weeks but during the Summer they are best watered every 5-7 days. The main thing that Jade Plants require is Sunlight, and they should always be placed in a Sunny spot in the House. A windowsill is usually ideal, but during the Summer months they can be placed out on a Patio during hot spells.
If Jade Plants are given enough light they can display small Pink flowers during November to April but this is unusual with the British climate. I have never seen my own Jade Plant flower and believe that a fertilizer would have to be regularly used to achieve this.
Jade Plants are incredibly easy to take cuttings from and this is done by removing one of the small leaves and simply placing it in a dry, sandy soil, cactus soil is ideal for this. The soil should be kept dry, it is sometimes hard to resist the temptation to water, but a detached leaf in a damp soil will often become affected with leaf rot. Even in a dry soil the leaf will put out tiny white roots after only a few days. The soil should be lightly watered about a week after the first roots have appeared.
PESTS AND DISEASES
Jade Plants are quite susceptible to Mealy Bugs but fortunately if these occur they are very easy to treat. Any affected leaves should be wiped with a cotton swab that has been soaked in rubbing alcohol and then the Plant should be thoroughly washed with a small amount of cold water with detergent.
CONCLUSION
I find Jade Plants to be very aesthetically pleasing with their thick stalks and bush like appearance but I know that this view is not shared by all. They are incredibly easy to grow successfully providing that they are given plenty of Sunlight, and they can survive long periods without water, but this will lead to much slower growth when compared with a Plant that has been watered more frequently.

It is an attractive ... ...doesn't mean it's dying - money plants LOVE the sunlight, although they are just as happy sitting in a dark corner somewhere . They also flower, tiny white blossoms, although mine has only ever done this once , after I deprived it of water for a particularly long time . I've never had to feed my plant, and I leave mine on my kitchen windowsill in direct sunlight . I water it a little probably once every two or three weeks, only a couple of teaspoons ...

Money plants are quite distinctive with their thick stalks, tree-like growth and fat, fleshy leaves that feel waxy to the touch. The visual appeal is not universal, some people remark how ugly it is while others say how nice it looks. I wasn't too conviced either way, I only tried to grow one since it was given to me as a present, but the little pot with three short twigs in it quickly turned in to one of my favourite house plants.
Like most succulents ... ...If growing a new money plant or re-potting and existing one it's important to use a free draining sandy soil, preferably cacti soil. However, you can substitute this with a good quality house plant compost mixed approximately 50/50 with sharp sand.
Finally, money plants are easy to multiply with either leaf or stem cuttings. Simply pull off a leaf or cut a stem that's 2-3" long and set it aside until the cut has developed a callous, which may take ...

The money plant Crassula arborescens.
Also know as the jade plant or friendship tree.
This plant is ideal for people with little experience with house plants.
The money plant requires little water over winter however in the summer when the sun comes out, water it frequently for rapid growth. Try to let the soil dry out between watering. Its better to be on the sparse side with water as the plant has evolved to be able to deal with dry conditions. ... ...plant likes to be pot bound (good news for the casual to lazy grower)
And will not need to be repotted for some time, particularly if you grew your plant from a cutting.
Taking a cutting
If you see it (Its quite common in offices and places of business)
Pinch off one of the leaves and take it home.
Place it on some sandy soil, which should be kept dry to prevent the leaf rotting.
Then wait for small roots to form.

The money plant, bringer of fortune.... or is it.
I have been told that if you own a money plant and can keep it in bloom, good fortune will be bestowed upon your household and you will never want for money.
The money plant is very easy to care for, it should have good light but prefers not to be in direct sunlight, and water two times a week is usually plenty. Since the leaves of the plant store water it is also ok if you forget to water it from ... ...i have occasionally cursed my money plant, but i would rather be pennyless and have this lovely plant with its thick dark green leaves take pride in my living room. I personally think it is a nice looking plant and it is easy for anyone to care for, even those of you out there who think all plants hate you and die at the sight of you can feel quite safe in the hands of a money plant. ...

I have a Money tree plant, crassula ovatea, no it does not grow money wish it did. This plant is also called the jade plant or friendship plant.
I think it is called money tree because it has roundish plump flat leaves that might with a bit of imagination look like a coin. This plant is usually kept as a dwarf inside the house. It can be grown in the garden I have seen picture though of these plants growing as tall as 2 metres /6 foot I think this ... ...help then flower.
The money trees I have known are kept miniature in small bowls. The soil they need has a little multi purpose compost +grit and sand.
One thing these plants do need is light a lot of it, but if they do get too much direct sunshine the leaves will scorch. Sometimes I find my plant looses a leaf this maybe because it was too dry or too cold.

Bay is an everygreen herb which grows like a shrub, it can be grown in open spaces or in tubs.
The flowers of the bay are yellow and it will flower in may.
The best way to get a bay plant is to buy one from a garden centre for around 99p depending on the size. I also like to get my herbs from bootsales where you can pick them up from 25p so saves money.

Welcome into my garden, I would like to show you and tell you about this plant it is called Honesty, Latin name Lunaria. The name is derived from moon this is because the seedpod is round and silvery looking like a moon, a common name is moneyplant I guess because again the seedpods look like a coin.
Honesty is a member of the cabbage family
This is a very easy plant to grow. If you wish to grow some now may/June is a good time to sow its seeds. You should be able to buy a pkt for between £1 and £2 either from garden centres or on line seed shops. Once you have honesty in your garden there should be no need to buy new seeds of it. The seeds are easy to collect and sow where you want new plants to grow.
The honesty flower will self-set if you leave the seed cases on the plant they will falloff and grow where they fall ...

Plants are laid out very well, with each type clearly marked in it's area ie. shrubs, climing plants, herbs, bedding plants etc. I like the selection of climbers they have eg. clematis, honeysuckle, jasmine, passion flower and lots more varietys it would take ages to name them all so I suggest you go and have a look, you will be glad you did. It is a beautiful place with a lovely entrance covered in plants, they do an especialy nice display at christmas.They show you how to decorate your tree, from traditional to a colour scheme of decorations. Some decorations tend to be expensive, while others are more reasonably priced.
So there you have it, a lovely place to spend a sunny sunday to take your mum or grandma to cheer them up, bye for now. ...
