This plant is ideal for people with little experience with house plants.
The money plant requires little water over winter however in the summer when the sun comes out, water it frequently for rapid growth. Try to let the soil dry out between watering. Its better to be on the sparse side with water as the plant has evolved to be able to deal with dry conditions. Too much water will cause it to rot.
The plant likes to be pot bound (good news for the casual to lazy grower) And will not need to be repotted for some time, particularly if you grew your plant from a cutting.
Taking a cutting
If you see it (Its quite common in offices and places of business) Pinch off one of the leaves and take it home.
Place it on some sandy soil, which should be kept dry to prevent the leaf rotting. Then wait for small roots to form.
In a while the roots should penetrate the soil and a small plant will form at the base of the leaf. Give the plant a little water at this stage and the withered leaves will then fill up with a store, providing the plant with protection should you forget to water it in the future.
These plants reproduce asexually by fragmentation and along with cacti and other succulents are the easiest to take cuttings from.
I think they may be called friendship trees as friends can give one another cuttings in this way.
The plant is notoriously difficult to get to flower. I have never succeeded in doing so, but it is vital to provide the plant with a rest during the winter. Which means lower light levels, less watering and no feeding. A reduced temperature is also helpful but do not go bellow 6 degrees Celsius.
Hi Gavin,
welcome to Ciao, nice op. I have one of these plants and have systematically abused it (forget to water it, never feed it, never been repotted). Mine has produced flowers for the past three years in a row! I guess it likes to be treated mean!

I kill everything apart from vegetables so this probably isn't for me!
