I have a Money tree plant, crassula ovatea, no it does not grow money wish it did. This plant is also called the jade plant or friendship plant. I think it is called money tree because it has roundish plump flat leaves that might with a bit of imagination look like a coin.
This plant is usually kept as a dwarf inside the house. It can be grown in the garden I have seen picture though of these plants growing as tall as 2 metres /6 foot I think this is in south Africa though where conditions are warmer and sunnier.
This plant is a cactus. They need little water only water them when they are dry and then only a little bit from the top. . They do need a little watering in winter to help then flower.
The money trees I have known are kept miniature in small bowls. The soil they need has a little multi purpose compost +grit and sand.
One thing these plants do need is light a lot of it, but if they do get too much direct sunshine the leaves will scorch. Sometimes I find my plant looses a leaf this maybe because it was too dry or too cold.
The plant I own was given to me by a friend my mother has one, which comes from her mother’s plant. I think my friend told me it was a money plant that she was passing on to me so while it thrived we would never be short of money . It is called a friendship plant, as it is easy to propagate and give to your friends. My mother’s plant is an old plant. She propagated it from her mothers plant.
Crassula ovatea is easy to propagate you can take a leaf and just let it dry for a day or two then pot it up into a sandy gritty soil mix and water and this will eventually grow into a healthy plant .To make new branches you need to pinch the top of the plant out this will make it bushy. If the conditions are right in the winter this will produce small white pinkish flowers.
Thanks for reading Best wishes Happy gardening Mary

I have three of these, the Mummy one is 15 years old and huge it has never flowered, 4 years ago I grew another one from it, which has flowered twice, and the third is a one year old baby, that hasn't flowered yet, I have also given loads to friends and family, they are so easy to keep aren't they, a friend of mine got fed up with hers and chucked it out on a heap of rubish, it doubled in size in about 3 months and was like a triffid, Heatherx

I've grown these for years, and mine never flowered until last year after it nearly died with kindness of too much water when we were on holiday! I phoned in to a gardening programme and was told the flowers are a last ditch attempt to survive! Well it's flowering again and looks very pretty, so thanks for clearing that up - you're better than the EXPERT! PS. I'm keeping an eye on my hyacinths 5 weeks to go, but I think they'll have bloomed before then not to worry. JO
