Nikon D90 - My Next 'Last' Camera

Advantages: Movies, LiveView, 12.3 mpixels, build quality, excellent lens range
Disadvantages: Still quite bulky for casual use. Expensive if that's all you want it for

. The D90, whilst looking, from the front at least, identical now boasts a picture definition of 12.3 mega pixels, twice that of the D70. However, it?s in what else it can now do that it outstrips the D70 by a mile. For one thing, it has the capability to shoot movies (yes, movies) in 720 line hi-def which can then be fed via an HDMI port direct to an HD-ready TV. Unlike the first wave of DSLRs, you can now preview the shot you?re about to take on the LCD screen at the back rather than use it to play back existing shots only. This has long been the ?Holy Grail? of SLR makers since SLRs still retain a physical shutter that keeps the ?film? or rather the electronic sensor in the dark till ready to fire so this is no mean feat. However, it?s not unique to Nikon ? I think Olympus, Canon and maybe others have been doing this for a while now ...

Plantronics Audio 90

Advantages: Helps you co-ordinate attacks/defence with your online gaming clan
Disadvantages: USB would be easier to have instead of 2 audio/microphone plugs

When I did a lot of online gaming, everyone in our clan needed the ability to talk to one another on *comms* - which is were essential for competitive gaming to co-ordinate attacks or defence as soldiers in WW2. Trouble was, my cheap headset made it hard for others to hear me (lots of crackle) and was uncomfortable to wear as well. So I treated myself to the Plantronics Audio 90, and immediately I had perfect clarity of all the game sounds, and of all the voices of my friends, and they could now hear me perfectly. Very comfortable to wear. The headset is not flimsy but has a decent weight to it without being overly heavy, and a feeling of quality. There is a volume up/down wheel on a panel on the cable. Also a mute switch. Occasionally the mute switch would catch on my clothes and I'd spend a while working out why no one ...

Review of Plantronics .Audio 90 Headset

My experience of the Nikon D90 as an amateur photographer.

Advantages: Excellent picture quality, lots of useful features, well designed controls, great kit lens
Disadvantages: More expensive than some other DSLRs, quite big and heavy, limited movie mode

How I made my choice I recently bought the D90 to upgrade from my Olympus 560UZ bridge camera, so this is my first foray into DSLR photography. Most people starting in DSLR photography will opt for the cheaper D40, or the D60, D70 and D80. I am not particularly rich, and in the end chose the D90 because I didn't want to grow out of the smaller DSLR and have to buy a new body quickly. I have found that the prices of Nikon DSLRs haven't decreased significantly over the last 3 years, so I decided (maybe wrongly) that this option would save me money in the long run. I found that it is very important to go into a shop and hold the camera in your hands before making a choice. All the photography shop assistants said that the Canon series was just as good as the Nikons, but I discounted them because I didn't get on with the feel ...
