...and spotted this book, The Monkey puzzle, and was included in there 3 for 2 offer on books. I knew the author was a good one but was unsure to buy it or not and I was only after one book at the time so the offer was making me spend more money than I wanted. Luckily for me in Wimbledon there is a discount book store located opposite the ELC, which I use regularly, so I went in there to see what children books they had. I could not believe my eyes ... ...Well it is about a monkey that is lost in the jungle and wants to find his mum, so a Butterfly helps him to find his mum. ~ Monkey Puzzle ~
This book follows the story of a little monkey who has lost his Mum and a butterfly that tries to help him find her.
The little monkey can only tell the butterfly that she's bigger than him and so begins the search, in rhyme.....
The first animal that the butterfly offers to the little monkey as his Mum is an elephant, well it's bigger than the little monkey!
"My Mum isn't a great grey hunk.
She hasn't got tusks ... ...the butterfly takes the little monkey to and the sections in brackets are the clues that the butterfly gets from him as to what his Mum looks like.
(My Mum's got more legs), a spider (She lives in treetops, way up high), a parrot (My Mum leaps and springs), a frog (She's brown and furry and nice to cuddle). And so on to a bat (She's not nearly so small).

Quick review of Monkey Puzzle - Julia Donaldson Review ofMonkey Puzzle - Julia Donaldsonby

Another excellent book by Julia Donaldson. Very readable and enjoyed by my 4 year old son. It gives characteristics of animals which you can discuss as you read. Again the use of a chorus that is repeated on each page means your child can join in with the story, very quickly.

Can butterfly help little monkey find his mum? Yes, finally, but only after a lot of trial and error as butterfly misunderstands monkey's descriptions and leads him to all sorts of unsuitable animals. This book presents a very clever, very funny story from the author/illustrator team that brought you "The Gruffalo". It is shortlisted for The Smarties Prize. 'A modern classic' - "Observer".
