I received this compendium as a gift recently and it is one of the best board games I have ever had. As well as the classic board games Monopoly and Cluedo, there is also Chess, Draughts, Cribbage, Dominoes and Cards included in the box.
First of all, the box is beautiful. It is a large square wooden box (13kg in weight) with a drawer on one of the sides. This pulls out to reveal the playing parts for Cluedo, Chess and Dominoes. The top of the box is the Monopoly and Cluedo board, which can be flipped round depending on which one you're playing. This board lifts out to reveal trays for the playing pieces for Monopoly, Draughts, Cribbage and Cards. Under this is the Chess board which sits inside the box.
The playing pieces for Cluedo and Monopoly are very detailed. The Cluedo characters are small figurines rather than the plastic pieces often used. It also comes with very detailed back stories to all the characters that I'd never known before! The board is also a lot more detailed than I've seen in other versions of the game, which adds to the playing experience. The Monopoly pieces are also very ornate, more so than usual. One thing that could be better when playing Monopoly is that the Chance and Community Chess cards don't have the labels written on the top side of them, so when you have them laid out on the board, you're forever moving them to check which is which. Also, these cards and the bank notes are a lot smaller than usual, which could be tricky for some players. These are very small negatives though and overall, the player experience is a very positive one (depending how the game goes!).
As for the other classic games, these are exactly how you would expect them to be. They are very much unchanged from how they've always been. The Chess pieces have a good weight to them and are made of metal, so it would be a good set to invest in. We have yet to master the game of Cribbage and the rules book is rather confusing but there's plenty to keep us occupied in the rest of the compendium until we learn!
The average price is £45 which is at the higher price range for a board game but there are 7 games + included so I personally think this is very good value for money.
Overall, I can't recommend this compendium enough - it has all the classic games that everyone knows and loves in one place so everything is kept neat and tidy. There could even be multiple games going on if one can't be decided on as there are two different boards (the Cluedo and Monopoly on one, Chess and Draughts on another) that can be used at the same time.
We've only had this a few days and already it has provided many hours entertainment, and I'm sure there will be many more to come!
