Advantages: Full of tension and intrigue Disadvantages: couldn't find any
As a great fan of JamesHerbert It took me just 1 weekend to read this book.
Basically it is the story of a man who has very bad dreams. That's not too bad I hear you say it's just that his dreams start to become reality in an extremely hideous way. The whole thing is set on an island where our hero works teaching Information Technology at a private girls school. Of course there is the love interest and he also has an ex-wife who lives on the mainland with his daughter.
From the very beginning this book has you on the edge of your seat, and the feeling of terror continues to grow throughout. Full of hideous murders, strange characters and psychic phenomenon it is very well written and well worth a read. Just when you think you know who did it the tale twists and you have to start thinking all over again. Several times I ...
Advantages: James Herbert Disadvantages: Not as scary as normal
I’ve got to be honest about this one and say its not one of my favourite JamesHerbert novels, this doesn’t mean it wont appeal to other JamesHerbert fans. That all depends on which elements of his work you prefer, myself I enjoy the more macabre elements or a really strong story line. Although this does have these to a certain degree it didn’t “scare” me or entertain me in the same way as some of his other pieces, again though this is only my opinion so don’t let it put you off.
Although the story itself is not too bad (more later) the “scary” bits in it didn’t really work for me and I found the ending a little bit of an anti climax
I am probably being a little hard on the book if truth be known because as far as horror stories go it is better than most other authors work ...
Advantages: Could read again and again Disadvantages: Not a book for the young
This was the second ever JamesHerbert book I read and I am so glad that I did!
I was able to read this book in a relatively short period of time as I was so addicted to it and really just couldn't put it down for too long.
The story line was really gripping and I actually found myself really getting into the characters lives too!
Its a book that you must pay attention to, I don't feel its a book you can just pick up and put down when you feel like it. I feel you would lose out on alot of the story if you did this.
This was such a pleasure to read and I would definately read it again! I feel it would make a pretty awesome movie!
JamesHerbert's attention to character detail is amazing, you can really feel yourself imaging the character in that situation and seeing how they look and act.
This book could be read again and again! ...
He had fled from the terrors of his past, finding refuge in the quietness of the island. And for a time he lived in peace. Until the 'sightings' began, visions of horror seeping into his mind like poisonous tendrils, violent acts that were hideously macabre, the thoughts becoming intense. He witnessed the grotesque acts of another thing, a thing that glorified in murder and mutilation, a monster that soon became aware of the observer within its own mind. And relished contact. A creature that would eventually come to the island to seek him out...'Guaranteed to give you nightmares' - "Daily Mail". 'Building to a horrific climax, it's James Herbert's best book yet. But do not read it alone...especially on a moonlight night' - "Daily Mirror".
