menstrual cup. At around two inches long it is worn internally like a tampon but collects menstrual fluid rather than absorbing. Unlike tampons the Mooncup is not a disposable product, so you only need to buy one, so our landfill sites will thank you too! The Mooncup will hold 30ml of fluid, which is roughly one third of the average total produced each period. A light seal is formed with your vaginal walls allowing your menstrual fluid to pass into the Mooncup without leakage or odour. You will probably find that you need to empty your Mooncup less frequently than you currently replace towels or tampons. Size: A measures 46mm in diameter and 50mm in length, Size B measures 43 mm in diameter and 50mm in length. Both sizes have a pull stem 21mm long, which you can trim to the length that is right for you. Size A: is recommended for women who have given birth vaginally or who have had a caesarean sect

Periods can be an uncomfortable, messy and annoying part of life and I'm sure that I'm not the only one who faces 'that time of the month' with a certain amount of resigned dread. As the frequency of TV and magazine adverts show, we are always on the look out for something to make the whole experience more comfortable - towels and tampons are regularly upstaged by the newer slimmer, more shapely and more absorbent designs and the whole thing can become an thoroughly annoying, not to mention expensive, experience. Then there's the remembering to always carry spares, the frequent changes in yukky public toilets, not to mention the worry of leaks, smells and TSS...
I'm sure many female readers will be nodding in recognition and many squeamish male readers will have been scared off by now so I'll just get to the point!
I first saw an advertisement for a 'menstrual cup' on the back of the door of a relatively clean and sadly graffiti free public toilet. With nothing else to read I was intrigued by the claims that the Mooncup was cleaner, cheaper and more environmentally friendly that other sanitary products and hurried to Google it as soon as I arrived home.
I was immediately directed to a friendly and helpful website which explained how and why the Mooncup worked so well and (after a little scouting around the internet to read other opinions) I wasted no time in ordering one for myself. I'm sure anyone who is interested will look at the website for themselves so I won't overdo the technical info here but just go straight to my own experience /opinion of using the product.
The Mooncup costs around £18 but claims to replace other products completely and lasts for several years so it is great value for money. It arrived swiftly, packaged in a little cloth bag for storage and with a small instruction booklet. Insertion and removal is fully explained in the booklet, with helpful diagrams, but it does take a bit of getting used to (remember that first time you tried inserting a tampon?). I'd definitely allow plenty of time for a first try and it is suggested that you begin with a 'dry run' before your first real use.
As the name suggests the product itself is a 'cup', designed to collect menstrual fluid. It is worn inside, like a tampon though lower, and needs to be removed and emptied several times a day. It will need to be sanitised between cycles but a quick rinse will suffice each time it is emptied. It is made of a very soft and flexible silicone and is very comfortable to wear - in fact its quite easy to forget you're wearing it!
As I said, there are pretty clear instruction for use included and I found it straightforward to put in though, as the cup is 'folded' over to put in there was a fairly uncomfortable sensation as it 'pops' out into position inside you. I've never seen anyone else mention this so maybe its just me and I haven't quite got the hang of it yet! It is worth checking the seal at this point to avoid any leaks. Removing it can also be pretty tricky until you get used to it. The easiest method is to get hold of the actual cup (above the stem; that's really not much use at all and I've seen several people say that they just cut it off completely) and insert a finger alongside it to break the seal. If it seems to be stuck don't worry, just try to relax and it will come out. The seal which keeps the whole thing so neat also creates a lot of suction if you just pull at it without releasing the seal and this can be quite uncomfortable but it just takes a bit of practice to get it right.
Once in position the Mooncup is perfectly comfortable (I can't even feel it) and totally secure. I was a little anxious at first and used a slim towel as a 'back-up' but there was really no need, there's never been any sign of a leak. It is fine to wear at night and I have actually slept right through without noticing and had no problems at all. I really can't come up with any negative points, except perhaps to say that it might not be suitable as a first time sanitary product and for anyone who is not comfortable with 'downstairs', simply because it takes a little time and practice to get it right. I would strongly urge all women who've read this far to try it for yourself, at least take a look at the manufacterer's website and allow yourself to be convinced! Have a little patience and give it a chance and you will find that it can make that dreaded monthly event just a little bit (or, like me, a whole lot) easier.

Advantages: enviromentally friendly Disadvantages: difficult to use to begin with
I as i imagine most women are not a big fan of periods, they are just one of those things we have to grin and bear each month from puberty untill the menopause sets in which i am hoping will be early with me as i hate having a period each month.
My periods have been made a lot more bearable by me purchasing a moon cup, pictured above and for anyone still living in the dark ages that hasent heard of them yet they are a rubber cup that you insert ... ...you will no longer need to use lilets or sanitary towels, they cost around £20 but are reusable for many years so are in my opinion worth there weight in gold.
The main inconvienience for me with my periods was that towels dry my skin out too much causing me to be very sore and my flow of my period is very light for the first two days so i was always worried with lilets about the fibers being left behind, all my worries are gone with this moon cup ...

Advantages: enviromentally friendly, moneysaving and more comfy! Disadvantages: none
...Basically the beauty of the mooncup is that it is reusable (you just need to boil it once a month), ot can be kept in until it is full AND you can put it in at any point of your period and it will not have that horrible dry feeling that you can get with tampons. Yes it can take a bit of getting used. I would say give yourself 3 months to get used to it. Personally I have found that you do have to be a little careful when taking it out and putting ... ...blood can drip down. The other thing I have found is that i'm pretty certain that women such as myself that have been stitched down there and are not quite how they used to be also have more tendency to leak. Don't get me wrong though this is still a fabulous creation. It is money saving, more hygienic and can be used before and for the whole of your period. The length of time you can wear it for depends really how heavy you are. On my heaviest days ...

Quick review of Mooncup Menstrual Cup
I bought my Mooncup about 2 years ago and haven't looked back.
It is environmentally friendly, so makes you feel quite virtuous :) Can be used for any flow - just adjust how frequently you empty/clean the Mooncup (common sense really, just the same as tampons and pads!)
It is better for YOU. No chemicals or fibres, and doesn't dry you out.
Easy to take traveling. Saves space. No need to worry about wrappers or rubbish.
Takes sogetting used to, but once you've mastered putting it in and out, and cut the stem to a comfortable length, you will love it. At first I kept the stem quite long so it was easier to remove, but as I gained confidence I just cut the whole stem off and i've had no problem taking it out.
If you are on the go (public loos *horror!*) you can just rinse the Mooncup with some bottled water from your handbag. ...

Advantages: cheap,eco-friendly,kind to skin Disadvantages: there are none
I cannot believe that Mooncup has been around for years and I had not heard of it til six months ago when a told me about how she had been using one as an alternative to tampons and towels.
As the story goes I have an acute allergic reaction to towels and tampons always let me down plus I was annoyed at the cost every month at was is actually an unavoidable expense and also the impact on the enviroment. Mooncup seemed to offer an answer to all these ... ...eighteen pounds which I worked out would have paid for itself within five months. It is easy to fit after a few practice sessions and is truly comfortable. Once fitted in place it collects everything and you just need to empty it every few hours. You can then rinse and replace and is so discreet to use unlike towels that you have to find a bin for. After your period you can soak it in a weak bleach dilution and replace it into its own neat little ...

Advantages: great idea, good for the environment, better for your body. Disadvantages: can have somewhat dire consequences !
I have always been environmentally conscious..not in an obsessive way more in the way that I will do all I can to live as guilt free as possible, whilst still living life to the full.I dont eat animal products and i'm careful about what i buy...which is why the mooncupmenstrualcup attracted me in the first place!
when i first encountered it it was an email sent to me and I disregarded it..it seemed a bit 'out there' I hadnt heard of the product before and i was busy.i didnt research it or thingk anytyhing of it.
A few months later, I joined an internet site I found, a discussion forum for people with my morals, a vegan forum. On here I found I really fitted in and it was interesting. One thing also on there was a forum for women and our issues, periods etc and the menstrualcup idea came up again. I read up on it and it seemed ideal ...

Advantages: Safer, Reliable, Environmentally Friendly, No need for tampax or pads Disadvantages: Have to be comfortable with your body & product
products and safety & reliability far outweigh the downside.
so i would highly recommend the mooncup and if you feel too embarrassed to go to the shop and buy it, try www.mooncup.co.uk
in answer to the comments - the mooncup can be re-used indefinitely as far as i know, it's about two inches long, the shape of a deep bowl with a tail and made from soft silicone. It's worn internally like tampax collecting fluid. it's not disposable product, so you just need one and as you can leave it in for up to 8 hrs you don't necessarily need to change it while at out(depending how long your day is obviously).
for instructions on use, i think it's best to refer to the website and the mooncup comes with an info booklet

Advantages: Cheap in the long run, enviromentally friendly, 'easier' periods Disadvantages: Can take some practice, sqeamish ladies may have trouble
I first found out about the Mooncup on this website, funnily enough. I had never heard of it before, and to be honest I'm not surprised. Not enough women know about this wonderful invention, even though it has been around for decades, in one form or another.
***So what is it?***
A Mooncup is a menstrualcup. Basically it catches the blood released during your period, inside your vagina, allowing you to carry on as normal, and empty it periodically when you pop to the loo.
***So you mean you have to dispose of the contents yourself?***
Yes, and that's where the sqeamish comes in. When you empty it (which you must do at least 4 times a day to keep healthy), you have to tip the contents down the loo and wash the cup (or wipe it with loo roll) and then re-insert it.
***Insert it? Like a tampon?***
Yes and no. The Mooncup is ...
