MOPyfish is a virtual pet fish, (Piscenus Mopei Floataneus ) who swims around your screen just like a real fish. The nice people who invented the MOPyfish actually based him on a couple of real parrot fish - Gill from Finding Nemo is a parrotfish. They took over 1 million shots of them and also monitored their behavioural patterns, which means the MOPyfish is a very realistic fish indeed.

All I can do is assume he is a deep-water fish and likes it that way. However, having him on such a dark background does make him quite striking.

My computer desktop at work is almost as messy as my real desktop: both are littered with bits of paper that hang around until I think it’s safe to throw them in the recycle bin. Although I can’t hide the fact that my real desktop is a tip, I can disguise my computer desktop with a screensaver, leading my colleagues to believe that I am in fact a model of efficiency when it comes to storing files and computer bits and pieces. As if!
I recently discovered a much better than average free screensaver – not for me the randomly swirling windows designs or a photograph of my cat. No, this one is rather good, and not just pretty: it’s both screensaver and interactive virtual pet.
Mine is called Bruce.
Bruce is a nice fishy orange colour, and he swims in a tank (my screen) of very dark water, which upsets me a little as I would prefer to see him in a tank of crystal clear blue water. All I can do is assume he is a deep-water fish and likes it that way. However, having him on such a dark background does make him quite striking.
In the morning I sit down at my desk and talk to Bruce (not necessary for his welfare but I like to) and click on the fish food button to feed him – he then swims to the top of the tank to feed, and I go off and make my coffee. Then I usually say bye to him and get on with important work stuff (like checking my hotmail) and he’s quite happy for the rest of the day.
He doesn’t just eat though: Bruce has an artifical brain and will play – if I click on him very fast he will respond and he likes to be stroked with my mouse and will hover patiently while I do this. If I chose to ignore Bruce or aggravate him, he would sulk, get aggressive, and eventually maybe even float to the top of his tank and die… sob! Luckily if you make some terrible mistake and accidentally kill your fish, you can resurrect him. (If only that worked for the school gerbils.) A resurrected fish will lose all the items in his tank – and his memory – so effectively you will have to start again. It’s best to feed your fish once a day – after 6 days without food he will fall ill, and after two weeks – its curtains.
It’s recommended that you play with your fish within an hour of booting up your computer every morning to maintain a relationship with him. I don’t reboot my computer unless I crash, but Bruce still seems to know when it’s feeding time and presses his nose up against the glass.
Why MOPyfish? MOP stands for Multiple Original Printout. For every multiple copy of a document you send to your printer, you get MOPy points – up to 40 for every print job. You can exchange your MOPy points for items to spruce up your tank – a rock and plant for him to play hide and seek when you get to 800 points, soothing sounding air bubbles at 1600, a thermometer at 2400 and some downloadable aphrodisiac fish food at 3200 (I won’t tell you what this does as it will spoil the surprise!) You can email suggestions for new fish toys through the website: I’ve ha d Bruce for over a year now and haven’t seen many changes, which is a bit disappointing. But since he is totally free I can’t really complain.
He is very easy to download - simply go to the website and follow the instructions. If you want him as your screensaver, don't forget to change the screensaver settings on your computer.
You can download your own MOPy (11.3 MB for entire folder including uninstall option) at www.mopyfish.net or visit www.virtualcreatures.com to download a virtual spider instead.
Yeah, I know, another fishy op. But this time, of the virtual fish kind. www.mopyfish.net offers you the chance to download a fish that acts both as a screensaver and as a virtual pet on your pc.
Fans of Big Brother, would probably have noticed that along with the real goldfish they had in the house was a virtual tank too. That was a MOPy fish and you can get your own MOPy fish for free.
What is a MOPY fish? It’s a virtual pet fish created ... ...is based on the Parrot fish, and it’s behavioural patterns were monitored over a period of time to enable a realistic virtual fish to be created. As well as mopyfish.net, Global Beach Ltd have another site called virtualcreatures.com where you can curently download spiders too.
So, why would you want a MOPy fish? Well, as I said, not only is MOPy fish a screensaver but it's a virtual pet too. It responds to mouse clicks so the more you play ...

Advantages: Doesn't lick your face Disadvantages: No good as a guard dog
I was invited to participate in a survey recently and one of the pre-screening questions was “Do you have a pet?” I answered “No” and didn’t satisfy the criteria for the survey. After I’d thought about it, I realised that I should have said “Yes!” because I do have a pet. His name is Dylan and he is alive and living on my desktop.

When I bought my first PC about four years ago I couldn’t wait to fill it up with the usual rubbish, so I downloaded every bit of useless junk I could get my hands on and eventually it ground to a halt. I’ve learned a great deal in the last four years and now have a much bigger, better and more resilient PC that I haven’t filled up with useless junk. There is, however, one little programme that I couldn’t wait ...

Advantages: Challenging game, practice our patience and learn how to take care pets, freeware Disadvantages: Need much time
I have ever written about Sach Marine Aquarium – a screen saver program with various kinds of fishes. I hope they are still alive on your PCs. About a week ago I got a fish with a cheerful nature, called Piscenus Mopei Floataneus as it scientific name or Mopy Fish as its popular name. This aquatic environmental fish is absolutely free of charge!
Though CIAO categorizes this software as a screen saver, I prefer categorizing it under a game software ... ...our Windows Operating Systems. It is really an interesting game, which requires much leisure time, patience, good attitudes and special care from its owner. Hence, once you put the fish (install the game) into your personal computer, please make sure you are ready to take care the fish. If you neglect the fish too long, certainly death is coming.
If you have much leisure time, and feel like to have a fish on your PC, you can visit www.MopyFish.net ...

Advantages: no cleaning required! Disadvantages: musnt forget him
I stumbled across Mopyfish accidentally whilst visiting the UK Big Brother website.
Apparently Mopyfish features in the show - hes the fish in the fishtank and is completely digitally created!
Mopyfish is a simple concept. He's a downloadable desktop pet, which according to the programmers is based entirely on a real type of tiger fish.
There are full instructions on how to look after your fish. Once he is downloaded onto your desktop you must ... ...by tapping at the desktop!
Mopyfish has artificial intelligence in that he will remember how he has been treated - if you feed him at 1 oclock every day he will start to expect 1 oclock to be his feeding time and will start giving signs hes hungry at that time. If he experiences periods of neglect he will become gradually more irritable and unfriendly.
If you frighten it, bother it too much or over feed it, it can become manic and nuts - it'll ...

Considering this software is free, it isnt bad at all. Most of the Windows Screensavers are boring, so it is good to search the Internet for screensavers that look good, and ones that you can interact with. Having completed many searches using search engines for a screensaver that is fun and is intervactive, I found that there was not many suitable ones at all, until I stumbled across Mopy Fish.
MOPY Fish was developed and produced by Virtual Creatures ... ...download the software (depending on your internet speed), and takes less than half a minute to install (again depending on your computer speed). You can also choose to set it as your default screensaver or not.
When you first open the program all you see is a black screen, your fish, a menu at the bottom and a name at the top. You can alter this name by cicking on it, pressing backspace a few times, and then entering the name you wish your fish ...
