On first impressions the 43311 appears like a shining miniature monument to humanity's desire to boil water. One is immediately seduced by its jug-like form and thick handle that snuggles into the palm of your hand thereby providing a firm comfortable grip. The stylish exterior is aesthetically pleasing. The smooth polished shiny stainless steel surface, when gently caressed, leaves no finger prints. This kettle not only shines; it glows with an luminous blue light emanating from the water gauge.
Making a Cuppa
This Morphy Richards jug kettle features a 3kW rapid boil that will boil you two mugs of coffee in less than two minutes. A major attribute is the 360 degree cordless base that allows easy replacement whatever bizarre twisted position you happen to be in and regardless of whether you're left or right-handed. Another blessing is the large spout for easy filling and pouring, although a top button lid-release allows you to give the kettle a thorough rinse out, as you always should do every week or so. A removable lime scale filter is firmly affixed just below the spout opening and the large glowing water level indicator allows you to accurately measure no more than the water content you rewire even in subdued lighting conditions. A concealed element allows for easy cleaning and descaling and the 8 cup/1.7 litre capacity should deal adequately with most household afternoon tea parties. After 6 weeks use I am pleased to say that nothing so far has fallen off or fallen out.
A Quiet Cuppa
What appealed to me most about this kettle was the 'quiet boil technology' allowing for uninterrupted and relaxing kitchen chatter. Unlike my previous £6 Tesco purchase, and given that my kitchen is adjacent to my living room, the Morphy Richards 43311 does not produce a noise that drowns out the essential dialogue between Ken and Deidre; no longer do I miss those important Jeremy Vine titbits on Radio 2 whilst making a cuppa and when the delicate tones of my front doorbell chime while the kettle is on, I am immediately aware and quickly able to attend the call of a distressed neighbour. When the water boils however, it whistles in the traditional fashion.
Possible Criticisms
The kettle is not the lightest I've used. At 1.35kg you'll need a good grip if you have to fill it up. The whistle cannot be deactivated so if you don't like whistling kettles you might have to look elsewhere. The button lid-release causes the lid to pop open a little to rapidly. Although there is no option to turn off the blue light, this uses a negligible amount of electricity so there really is no need to worry about this. I have read elsewhere that the kettle can scale up quickly. This will possible depend upon the quality of your tap water, but I have had no problem with this so far.
