Morrisons Coronation Chicken Sandwich Filling - Product Description – Chicken with mango Chutney, Apricots and Sultanas in a rich curried Mayonnaise dressing.
I dont know about you, but I have a real problem with sandwiches. Ever since school and the experience of soggy fish paste sarnies in my lunch box!! Now, as an adult, (ahem!!) I tend to enjoy a decent sarny. Those a little more upmarket than the fish paste, mind you! Brie ... ...our Safeways has changed to morrisons and I have eventually been tempted to enter the doors in search of a bargain. I came across Morrisons Sandwich Fillers in the fridges, next to coleslaw, dips and pates. They vary form 49p to £1.69 depending on variety and size. You can choose from Egg Mayonnaise, Tuna, Cheese and Onion, Pork and Apple. But one that particularly caught my eye was Coronation Chicken.

I tend to enjoy a decent sarny. Those a little more upmarket than the fish paste, mind you! Brie and grape or Salami, olive and tomato pickle are my two particular faves!
Recently our Safeways has changed to morrisons and I have eventually been tempted to enter the doors in search of a bargain. I always remember Coronation Chicken from Wedding Buffets as a child. I haven’t seen it for years, but there again I have lead a sheltered life!!
The clear plastic tubs come in two sizes, therefore prices are depending on which size you get.
They are labelled with a simple sticky label which actually seals the tub. You can actually examine the product through the tub before buying to see if it looks like something you want to stuff in your mouth!! Although the tubs are not by any means full to the brim, quite the opposite really, you will be surprised how much is actually in the tub. Don’t let first appearances put you off!
On opening the tub the smell doesn’t hit you as you would expect it to. You can smell a faint sweet curry aroma but nothing too strong. The mayonnaise dressing is a pale orangey, peach colour. It actually states that it is a mixture of mayonnaise and mango chutney. With a sandwich filler you would expect, well I expected, a runny and slightly mushy mixture so i was very surprised to find chunks of chicken. Cubes of chicken breast fill the tub along with a handful of sultanas and chunks of apricot. To fill a normal slice of medium sliced bread is rather difficult as it is co chunky! And I don’t use chunks in a loose sense! These really are ‘chunks’!!! A doorstop can be easily achieved using thick bread. The chicken breast doe snot taste spongey, liek reformed meats often can. This is prime chicken breast! I can't guarantee the apricots are fresh from the tree, but they are soft and fleshy!... very tasty in fact!
The taste is creamy and slightly spiced but nothing to blow your head off. I think ‘rich’ as in the description would be a little off putting. I did not find it rich, although my sons response was ‘Euch!’. But there again he is three!! The taste of the chicken can be detected and the fruits actually taste fresh within the dressing. A 170g tub actually contains 45% dressing which sounds a lot but is just about right. 31% of the product is said to be chicken breast, which I can well believe. So why, if all the ingredients are fresh and the product actually tastes good is it such value! Well, if you take into the rather crappy plastic packaging, then it sort of addds up! Very basic, but if it saves us pennies, doe sit really matter!?!
With a small tub, at least two sandwiches can be substantially filled. It is suggested that the filling could be used also as a salad accompaniment or as a baked potato filling. Whatever takes your fancy really I think!.
Due to the short shelf life of these products i tend not to buy the larger tubs, to be honest. The smaller tub of 170g costs 99p and the larger tub of 300g costs £1.29. The life on the fillings are not that long, as most fresh produce. I bought one today (Thursday) and it has to be eaten by Sunday and it does specify to keep refrigerated. It doesn’t say ‘Eat within two days of opening!’ either like some fillings so as long as you stick to the use by date you will be ok!
If oyu are on a diet, I think you should maybe steer clear of this particular sandwich filling. In one small tub there are over 500 calories! Wow! There are also 60g of fat, 18g of protein and 17g of Carbohydrate. It has been pointed out that 60g of fat seems a heck of alot, but I have checked and it does say 35g per 100g! I did only give a rough guideline. But, heck , it is a lot!!!
If you are an allergy sufferer, check the label before eating. This product does actually contain egg (mayonnaise), gluten, milk and nuts and seeds. There is also a warning regarding chicken bones but I have yet to find any trace of one! Thank god! If you are E number intolerant, you should also maybe check before eating as E412, E415 and E160C are present.
If you are looking for something a bit different and like a decent sarny, then this is well worth a try!! It certainly brightened up my lunch box!
