Mortal Kombat, the curse of spelling pedants and easily offended parents everywhere, has ... more
returned (again)--and this time it's making a proper effort to reclaim its crown as king of the beat-'em-ups. There are some games that just seem to be a product of their time, appearing ridiculous when dragged kicking and screaming into the present day;Mortal Kombatsuffered just such a fate when it was given one sequel too many and people realised that badly digitised 2-D characters in a dumbed-down version ofStreet Fighter IIwasn't quite in keeping with the zeitgeist.Sensibly, instead of trying to do just the same old thing with better graphics,Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliancebrings that most unexpected of presents to the beat-'em-up party: a new idea. Specifically, it gives you the ability to switch, at the press of a shoulder button, between one of three different fighting styles for each character. This works tremendously well, allowing you to change from ranged to close-up to weapons attacks, for example, with ease. The ability to see physical damage appear on your opponent during the course of a match is also a nice touch, but thankfully they haven't thrown the baby out with the bathwater and all the oldMortal Kombatextras are still here: there's a ton of spilt claret if you so much as touch the other player and a range of spine-ripping fatalities and brutalities to show off with at the end of a bout. Admittedly the graphics still aren't all that great, but they do the job and quite frankly anything that manages to makeMortal Kombatfresh and exciting again is doing very well indeed. --David JenkinsThis preview is based on an incomplete version of the game; features or problems mentioned above may not appear in the finished game.

I am one of the people who have grown up with the Mortal Kombat series of games, at a time when beat em up's were on average poor, until this title came along that is. I have not played any others since the first three, however, simply because i was growing up and perhaps getting too old for Mortal Kombat and their reviews were poor. After finding out that Deadly Alliance was the first one in the series to go fully 3D i thought that i should give it a go to compare it with the old 2D favourite of mine.
For those of you that have not played Mortal Kombat the emphasis of the game is good verses evil, the fighting occurs in a place called Outworld, in another realm from earth. The Mortal Kombat tournament pits good (the fighters who want to protect the realms and keep them free) against evil (the fighters who want to take over the realms for themselves). In this saga the story is that Shang Tsung (an evil fighter) has killed former tournament winner Liu Kang then sides with Quan Chi to form a Deadly Alliance. They awaken the army of the dead to devour enemies who are out to stop them. The player then uses the various fighters to win the tournament to discover what happens next in the story.
Any fans of the previous games will recognise many familiar faces. All characters who appeared in the first game are there apart from Liu Kang with Kano, Johnny Cage, Sonya Scorpion and Sub-Zero available from the start, as well as Kung Lao and Shang Tsung who were in Mortal Kombat 2. Raiden from Mortal Kombat 1 and Jax, Kitana and Reptile from Mortal Kombat 2 are able to be unlocked later in the game. There are also new warriors with stories attached like Hsu Hao, Mavado and Kenshi.
The game has two modes available for play, the arcade mode is where you battle through the tournament fighting different fighters in turn before you get the chance to crush the Deadly Alliance by taking on Shang Tsung and Quan Chi. After completing this mode a video of what happens next to the character you did it with is unlocked to show you what happens next in the story. Also in the arcade mode the famous test your might, where you bash the buttons to conjure up enough strength to break various objects, along with test your sight where you must follow the egg cup with the Mortal Kombat logo on it are included as mini games. Konquest is the other mode; here you get to learn the characters much better by learning their moves, fighting styles, combos and special attacks in ten different missions. This is the perfect way to perfect your fighting skills with every character and goes into depth much more than an ordinary practice mode would.
Every fight you win in arcade mode, mission you pass in Konquest mode and when you succeed at test your might and sight earns you currency. This can be used to purchase bonus items, characters, costumes, arenas or just pictures of Mortal Kombat merchandise in the Krypt. These items are hidden in Koffins where you have to pay a pre-determined amount of currency to open them. The Krypt was an exellent and original idea for unlocking the added content of Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance making you want to play it until everything is unlocked.
Each fighter in the game has three different types of fighting styles, one of these includes a weapon which adds another element to the game, changing styles can catch your opponent off guard and cause greater damage or turn the fight in your favour. It also meant moves and combos were very easy to perform as only one directional button and an action button is required to do different moves and the diagonal direction was never used. Even though this was the case each fighter could perform around 60-70 different moves and combos!
The graphics are well rendered, close up detail of the individual characters was a little blocky at times but the background of all the locations were really well done with the contrast in colours clear and in some there are people playing drums or rowing and it looked realistic. The camera kept up well with the action and because it was in 3D, unlike other Mortal Kombat games i found it a lot easier to avoid the other characters special move when it was performed.
My complaints of this game are even though i enjoyed the Krypt, if you were unlucky and could not find the bonus characters to unlock, bearing in mind there are 576 Koffins to open and only 9 additional characters to be found then the game got very repetitive, you had to keep on playing the arcade mode to get currency to be able to open more Koffins in the hope of finding characters and in Konquest mode you could go no further until another character was unlocked. I also found that for some reason some of the Koffins opened did not display you had already opened them so a while later you would open Koffins with nothing in them, this could just be my memory card i don't know. The differences between the levels of play were also vast, once you mastered the easy level it was hard again moving up to normal level
Overall Mortal Kombat deadly Alliance was a fun, addictive and slightly original addition to the successful series of games and as it went fully 3D Mortal Kombat has been taken to an advanced level. All the old favourites and a few new characters were there to add spice. The repetition factor annoyed me slightly having to get currency to try and find new characters but overall it is a very good game which merits its four out of five star rating. Its price should be no more than £8 pre-owned, in Amazon marketplace right now its cheapest price is £6.50 before postage.
Advantages: Good graphics, plenty of high speed action. Disadvantages: Almost impossible on Konquest with some fighters.
The Story
Mortal Kombat’s story revolves around the mortal and the immortal fighting in a tournament called Mortal Kombat but this game isn’t about the tournament. It’s about a sorcerer named Quan Chi escaping from the Netherealm and finding an undefeatable army, Dragon King, and forming an alliance with Shang Tsung. They destroy the only two beings that can prevent them from resurrecting the Dragon King army, Liu Kang and the Emperor Shao Kahn. ... ...have been in the other Mortal Kombat games before this one. Altogether, there are 22 warriors in this game, you start off with 12.
(Characters I didn’t say) Bo’ Rai Chi, Drahmin, Kano, Princess Kitana, Kung Lao, Nitara and the monster of the game Moloch. Each warrior has 3 fight styles, 2 punch and kick moves and one where a weapon comes into play but no matter what fighting style you are on, the specials of the warrior can be used.

...games as of late and Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance is no exception. The game is packed with extras such as mini games, ‘the making of MK’, the game’s history and a music video for the theme tune of the game. MK has come a long way since its early arcade days and is a lush and slick fighter that will give even the most amiable of people an unhealthy blood lust. The game looks, sounds and handles better than any other 3D fighter on the market. The ...
