"Crushing and Foreboding"

US death metal band Incantation's 1994 album 'Mortal Throne of Nazarene' is an alternately chaotic and lethargic beast. The songs rely heavily on momentum, generally starting as chaotic, fast-paced death metal tracks full of the sludgy bulldozer-riffing and oninous melodicisms employed by fellow countrymen Immolation, gradually working into long, heavy grooves as they slow the tempo down to a dirgey, funeral-doom crawl. The production is incredibly murky, but also quite bassy, and guitars, bass and drums all still stand out well. Its a powerful sound that suits the crushing and discordant nature of the songs well, which are further bolstered by the addition of ridiculously low and protracted, indecipherably guttoral growled vocals.

Whils the songs may initially all sound very samey, this notion fades over repeated listens as the songs reveal subtle changes in song structure. The constant tempo-changes keep things interesting, with the passages of murky blasting and crawling doom riffs blending into one-another seamlessly, the album achieving an atmosphere of overwhelming dread that recalls early Morbid Angel. The artwork and lyrics complement the music well, presenting a grotesque perversion of Christianity that is in keeping with the alternately despondent and ferociously animalistic nature of the music, and the notions of disgust, revulsion and despair that it conveys.

Uncompromising and hugely atmospheric, 'Mortal Throne of Nazarene' is an excellent mix of deliberately muddy-sounding death metal and crushing primordial doom that will appeal to Suffocation and Incantation fans and Esoteric and Evoken fans alike.

You can buy it for the bargain price of around a fiver delivered from amazon sellers, at which price its definitely worth picking up.
