Review of "Mothercare Luxury Bath Support"
Being kept busy by 4 kids and the summer holidays!
Being pregnant for the third time has made me slightly reminiscent of my previous pregnancy and baby experiences, it gives me a lot of food for thought as I decide what products I will or will not be reusing or replacing for baby Lumpys arrival in July. Back in 2004 when I was expecting my first child I was naturally a bit apprehensive, I'd not had much contact with babies and was unsure of how I'd cope with it all, bathing scared me in particular and I was always worried that I wouldn't support my baby properly, perhaps even letting him fall into the water, deciding it would be better to prevent even the risk of this happening we purchased the Mothercare fabric bath support in the hopes that it would ease my first time mum worries.Mothercare Fabric Bath Support-
The Mothercare fabric bath support is made up of a terry towelling cover which slips over a basic sloped wire frame, the cover can be completely removed for washing and provides a level of "non-slip" security meaning the support should not move around much in the bath.
It is designed to fit within baby baths as well as regular full sized baths and is suitable up until 6 months of age, at which point baby should be sitting up and will be reluctant to lie back on the support happily. It allows mummy or daddy to bath baby with a little reassurance that baby will be properly supported. The towelling cover gives a good degree of support to the baby while still remaining comfortable.
It is important to remember that no baby or young child should be left unattended during bath times, whether you are using a support/seat or not.
Price & Availability-
The fabric bath support is found in Mothercare stores and their online site for £7.99
We never really got on with this bath support and though we persevered for a few weeks we soon found ourselves looking for an alternative. It didn't fit properly in the baby bath as the base points were too wide, it also kept baby at too high a level to actually be in the water and we found we had to use an unnecessary amount of water for such a small child, now I'm not saying that I want baby submerged to it's chin but there needs to be a decent amount of water to keep him warm and have a good splash around, otherwise you may as well just give them a wash with a flannel.
Although the fabric design is meant to prove comfortable I found there was not enough give in the fabric and it didn't support Christopher very well, in fact he'd keep slipping down the slope of the support and we spent more time fighting to keep him in one place than enjoying bath times. To combat this slipping we tried using a rolled up towel at the base of the support but this only led to us having extra towels to dry everyday as well as the fabric cover which you couldn't really leave on the frame to dry as it took too long and would become damp and stagnant smelling. We also didn't find that the support was as non-slip as it promised to be and on the occasions where we used it in the big bath we would have to use it on top of a regular bath mat to prevent it moving around.Minor plus points did include the fact that you could remove the cover and wash it, this would keep it fresh and clean, often babies poop in the bath so it's handy to be able to properly clean your baby bathing accessories. Of course it can be argued that a solid plastic seat is wipe clean and therefore equally easy to keep clean and hygienic. It's also not a bad price if you have success with the support, sadly we didn't have such success and the Mothercare bath support was quickly replaced, not to be used again.
