Review of "Mothman Prophecies, The"
I first watched this film at the cinema becuase it looked very intrigueing. I didn't have great expectations and given i'm not a Richard Gere fan, i did worry this was going to be a waste of £5 or so. Little did i realise this was going to be the best film i'd seen for a long time but possibly the best film i've ever seen.
From the very start you are left wondering where this film is going to take you and if don't persevere you may lose scent of the track. The slow lure of the film makes you wonder is this going to be another tragic romance flick that twists and turns, but never goes anywhere. How wrong you will be, as soon as you realise that in fact the tragic car accident that leads to the identification of a brain tuma in Richard Gere's wifes head, is not the focal point of the story, you start to wonder what the hell is going on.
What caused the accident?, what were the red lights?,was it an accident? suddenly your gripped, as Richard Gere's character is. As the story moves on, those initial questions pale into insignificance and the true story unfolds. The accident was caused by a creature looking like a moth, stroke man, which has apparently 'chosen' Gere as a spectator for the bigger disaster that awaits.
After the death of his wife, Gere struggles to come to terms with what has happened. After a long drive, he partially nods off, to find himself driving down a country road, at which point the electrics on his car fail. His mobile phone is no longer working and he has no idea where he is. He walks to the first house he sees, and is welcomed by a man with a gun, who swears Gere has knocked at his door the previous two evenings at exactly the same time. This strange encounter is just the tip of the iceberg in his arrival at Point Pleasant.
I could give you the rest of the story, but i would almost definately ruin the film. Suffice to say, the film(based on a true story) just gets weirder and scarier by the minute. The questions don't stop running through you're head, and you never quite work out what will happen next.
Even if you treat the film as fictional, you will thoroughly enjoy it, and if you believe, better hope your not on your own. I didn't have the patience to wait for the for sale release, i had to watch it again on rental, before finally purchasing this excellent DVD. After returning from watching it at the cinema, my interior light which had never previously worked, decided to turn itself on. The relevance, you may ask? Well, the film is partly based upon electrical energy. A workmate of mine watched this film for the first time and her lights flickered constantly, having never previously done so and a friend of mine has visions of two moths in his room diving into his matress and disapearing. Now neither of these people are known for being eccentric or deranged, and i don't scare easy, but this film made a big impact on me. If you liked The Usual Suspects or The Green mile, you are sure to love this.
