The title has actually been knocking around for quite some time now and for me it was one of the first PS2 titles to make me realise just what the console is capable of. Title: Moto GP Format: PS2 Publisher: Namco
There’s something about Motorbikes that attracts millions of people to them. It’s quite probably the speed, more than likely something to do with the freedom and no doubt the desire to ride around with your lights on all day may come in to it somewhere. Well, perhaps not that last bit but one thing is for certain – they can be fast. Motorbike gaming titles are actually fairly common too although nowhere near as frequent or varied as their four-wheeled counterparts. For me there are three titles that stand out from the crowd. The first has got to be Electronic Arts’ Superbike series. Incredible graphics, an immense feeling of speed and crashes like you wouldn’t ever hope to see in real life (watch those riders fly!). The second is Microsoft’s Motocross Madness. Although it’s not the most realistic title around it is tremendous fun. You can pull off outrageous jumps that in real life would result in your spine being compressed like a concertina but it’s so much fun that you won’t really care if it’s real. So what can the third be? Well, if you’re on your toes today you’ll see that this review is on Namco’s Moto GP for the PS2.
The title has actually been knocking around for quite some time now and for me it was one of the first PS2 titles to make me realise just what the console is capable of. I remember seeing it in action and thinking how fast, smooth and realistic it looked. The replays were/are quite frankly out of this world and are (dare I say this?!) BETTER than those seen in the Gran Turismo series. Now I know I’m going to have to justify some of this craaaazy talk so let me begin.
Looks are one thing that makes this title stand out from the pack. It’s one of the earlier PS2 titles but visually is actually extremely impressive. The bikes and riders have a quite meticulous level of detail whilst the tracks are incredibly detailed and good-looking. At Donnington in particular there is a section just after the first turn where you can see miles into the distance – something that is great to see. As (outrageously) mentioned already, the replays are spectacular too. They have a seriously ‘real’ quality about them that really has to be seen to be believed. Distant shots have a slightly hazy appearance (not heat haze like in GT3) until the bikes come closer to the camera. The onboard camera shot is also quite strangely real if you’ve ever seen the onboard camera shots on TV. Basically – this title looks good enough to rival the best games yet seen on PS2, which should be applauded for such an early title.
The sounds in Moto GP are equally impressive featuring Ridge Racer style sounds and music. This shouldn’t be too much of a surprise as Namco are of course responsible for both titles. Music can be selected/changed during play for those ‘I HATE that song’ moments whilst engine sounds and crashes are equally realistic and not completely gratuitous. Volumes can be adjusted to suit your needs although sadly there isn’t any commentary featured which would have actually been really great here. EA’s Superbike games do feature commentary and it does make all the difference.
Features: There’s enough here to keep you busy for quite some time including Arcade, Season, Time Trial and even a Challenge mode. Arcade speaks for itself of course, just pick a bike/rider, choose your track and decide how many laps you want to undertake. Then bob’s your uncle – racing time. If you’re searching for a slightly more in depth experience then the Season option is going to be more your kind of thing. You’ll be competing here against the other riders for the top spot in the championship with full points system etc. The Challenge mode is a really great addition and injects a welcome mix of learning gameplay and specific targets. Much like in Gran Turismo you have to beat lap times or just cover stretches of track within a set time limit. This in turn will unlock extras that will add to the game longevity. Additional bikes etc are yours to be earned.
Control: Ah yes, the dreaded control method in bike games. It’s always been difficult to get that feel just right and to be fair Namco have done a pretty good job. You get a good feeling of awesome power as the back end wants to race from under you and wheelies are common from full throttle starts. The rider moves from side to side even getting his knee right down on those tight corners and handling does vary between bikes quite dramatically. The key is to find the bike that suits your racing style. Choose the wrong bike and the game will seem almost irritating in its response whilst others will see you cruising around the circuits with ease. The analogue stick provides capable and precise control although I feel it could still do with some slight adjustment.
Lifespan: There is no reason why this title shouldn’t remain in your collection for quite some time, as there is plenty to keep you going including a great two-player mode. There are several difficulty settings and you can choose to partake in full races as opposed to just a few laps at a time.
The Verdict: If there is a Gran Turismo on two wheels, this is it. Fast and furious racing along with great graphics and sound to match. This is a great PS2 title and an essential purchase if you’re at all interested in Motorbike games.
Advantages: Great fun to play, whatever difficulty setting you choose. Realistic and challenging. Disadvantages: Could do with having a few different tracks as there are only five (you can race them reversed though).
...what it is. So when Moto GP appeared, it came as a bit of a shock to me that, not only did it look damn good, it also came with a bucket load of realism...and all for just £39.99.
When you start the game up, you are greeted by a nice selection of options including Grand Prix, Challenge, Time Trial and Two Player modes. But it is the Grand Prix mode which offers players the most challenge, realism and lastability. Once you have chosen your rider ... ...the title on one of the five tracks. This is where the realism really kicks in. From the moment the lights turn green, you are battling for every place and constantly trying to shave seconds off of the guy in front. Cornering becomes a science as you try to hit every racing line and lean at just the correct angle. The other riders become bitter rivals as they try to cling on to their place just as tightly as you are. If this all sounds a bit daunting ...

Advantages: Very realistic Disadvantages: Limited range of tracks
Moto GP is a game where if you like motor bike games you will not be disapointed. Because the game is so realistic that when you brake the rider actully sits back as if he would in the race.
All the bikes and riders and statistics are from the most recent season 500cc grand prix racing season. All the racers look the same as they would in real life. The only downside to the game is that there is only five tracks and so this makes racing limited. ...

Advantages: Still the top bike racing game Disadvantages: total addiction promised
The new version is smoother and more responsive then the last and the difficulty levels are far more realistic. This game handles great and I never knew highsiding could be so much fun. There are plenty of bikes to choose from and also to win as you progress through the game. If you are looking for a game that you and your friends can all play then try the four player mode with the best split screen available and no squashed or stretched graphics.

Moto GP is an arcade bike sim. It has incredible graphics that draw you into the incredible gameplay. The bikes handle smoothly and realistic scenery and tracks add to the whole mood of the game. The 5 tracks have crowds of people that react to every move of the riders, cheer, wave and wave flags of your team to make you go faster...and you do. Every detail of the game is perfect and makes you want to race faster and faster to beat your rivals. The ... ...time. As there is only 5 tracks and 3 levels of difficulty with the maximum of 5 seasons on, hard mode, the game is fairly short. Despite this the sheerly immense graphics and handling of the game simply leaves it irresistable to any bike or racing fan. Overall this game is superb and again I say that the graphics are great but they are. The replays of the game show great detail of the bikes and show all aspects of the race and views of it. Overall ...

...from now on the title Moto Gp should be racing around your head.As soon as you see the superb graphics you cant wait to try this. The game is instantly a hit with the biggest problem being putting the controller down. The game is based around the 500CC series of bikes and gets the official thumbs up from the racing association. This means you get real named bike riders and 32 real bikes to play around with. This game requires 100% dedication when you ... ...another try.The good thing about Moto GP is that you don't have to spend all day trying to win you can just pick it up when you wantand give it a good bash. The arcade elements shine though but its the simulation side that keeps you on the edge of your seat.As far as racing games go this is the best at the moment and you would be hard pushed to find a better bike racing game ( At the moment that is )So go and try this excellent title. ...

MotoGP 3 is the third release of Namco?s line of Bike racers . It is definitely the best of the three. Its hard to belief that this game originated from the arcades, I use to play it there. This game though offers a more of a realistic biking simulation.
With all its original game types Arcade-Season-Time Trial-Multiplayer, this game is excellent. The handling and gaming is as good as ever, the graphics also have been tuned up a bit.
AS with this game , from the predecessor MotoGp2 most of the improvements are based periodically around the term of ? BIGGER means BETTER? . As with its five new circuits in the Czech Republic -Portugal ?Spain- New Zealand and Malaysia. There are even more challenges with its four player mode.
With the return of challenge mode , it comes with 100 new tasks that surpass even Gran Turismos ...
