The phone itself is a nice colour grey and silver, but about 1/3 of the back is taken up by it's very own speaker! I find this quite funny and have never seen it on any other mobile before. It seems like we have gone back in time about 10 years to when having a mobile phone the size of a suitcase was the norm. Ok, I'm exaggerating slightly, and it does have more functions than the mobiles of a decade ago, but it is a big phone. To give you an idea here are the specifications:

I traded in my NEC e606 because the battery life was really poor. I wanted to stay with 3 because, although the customer service is quite poor to say the least, they are by far the cheapest mobile provider around for cross network calls.
So in January 04 I trundled off to my local 3 shop to see what they had on offer. At the time I was really only concerned that the battery of the phone would last more than a day and wasn't really fussed about any other features. I saw the range that was on offer and the Motorola A835 seemed the best of a bad bunch really.

I quite like having this facility as it is useful for getting information quickly. I'm not going to lie to you - this phone is big. It seems like we have gone back in time about 10 years to when having a mobile phone the size of a suitcase was the norm. Ok, I'm exaggerating slightly, and it does have more functions than the mobiles of a decade ago, but it is a big phone. To give you an idea here are the specifications: Length: 13.5 cm Width: 5.8 cm Depth: 2.4 cm Weight: 168 grams That is almost the length of an A5 piece of paper!! See what I mean. Ok - so I'm a bit hung up on the size of it. I'm sure I'll get over it. But so would you be if your friends and family constantly took the piss out of your mobile. That is why I have entitled this review 'Me and my brick' because that is what my friends call my phone. I am constantly subjected to cruel jibes about my phone. All my friends are amazed that I can fit the thing into my bag - so am I sometimes!! This continual teasing is a source of great enjoyment to them. It's now make or break time. I either get a new phone or form an A835 support group and ditch my old friends. But I think even if I did get a new mobile they wouldn't let this one be forgotten about! Support group it is then. Anyone who wants to join leave a message in my Guestbook.
Alright, I've had my moan. Now on to the good bits.
*Functions* Calls out/in - the call quality for this phone is excellent. I cannot fault it. There is no interferance at all. It is as clear as using a land line.
Battery life - My main criteria is fulfilled as the battery lasts for about 2/3 days, although I don't leave the phone on at night. Interuption of beauty sleep is a big no no in the ruth23 household!
Video calls - obviously this is the main selling point for 3. I find the video calls lose their novelty after a while and it is easier just to call someone in the normal way. In order to partake in a video call you have to ring someone else with a 3 phone and they have to be in an area where they can pick up the 3g network. Because of this many calls end up being disconnected before you have finished what you are saying. This is another reason why I tend to stick to voice calls. Although I do have to say that the coverage is so much better than when 3 first started out. I hardly ever get no signal now, whereas before I used to suffer with this problem a lot.
Messages - The text message system on this phone is very good. There is a predictive text method called iTAP that is quick and easy. It remembers words that are used and gives you a good choice of options.
Phonebook - Entering contact details is very simple. You can record a voice recognition for each entry and choose whether to store the number to the sim or to the phone.
Multimedia - The functions stored here are the video recorder, camera, sound recorder and the place where you can view pictures and videos. The video option gives you 12 seconds of recording time and the quality is very good. The pictures are also a high quality and can be set as wall paper for the main screen. I used to think that camera phones were a bit pointless, but I really like having this facility and have taken a number of hilarious/silly/stupid photos of things. The only thing I would say is that it would be better if you could record videos for longer than 12 seconds. I mean how can you capture You've Been Framed worthy clips in 12 seconds - it's near on impossible!
Tools - There is a calendar on this phone that is exetremely useful. You can set a reminder as either a Task or an Event. Perfect for birthdays - I've been so good at getting cards for people ever since I got this phone - which is much needed as I forgot my nephews 1st birthday last year!! I know - I am a very bad auntie...my brother already made that quite clear!
Browser - This is a useful function containing games, ringtones, news, maps, weather and lots of other information you may need. I often download ring tones or use the maps. It is quick and easy to use and another facilty that I have become accustom to.
Customising - One of the best things about this phone is that you can customise just about everything from the time of the backlight to the options that appear on the front screen. You can even choose between an analogue or digital clock!
Other stuff - You can save your pictures to your computer. You get a disc in the kit along with a connection lead. which you may not need if you have infra red capability. You can also syncronise your address book and calendar to your PC. I don't really bother using these functions, but some people may find them useful. The phone also has an MP3 player.
*My Opinion* I really like all the functions and find the phone itself very easy to use and the price is very reasonable. But, and this is a big but, it is too big. And that is not me giving into peer pressure...honest!
However if you are not put off by the size of this mobile there are some fantastic deals to be had. At the moment 3 are offering 9 months 1/2 price line rental (£12.50) and 3000 texts for 3 months included in that price. I think even the most severe textaholics would struggle to send that many in one month! After 9 months the price reverts to £25. For this you get 500 cross network minutes a month. For more information visit www.dialaphone.co.uk or www.three.co.uk.
Advantages: Fantastic range of features incuding Bluetooth (Both with headsets AND file transfer), Infrared, MP3 player, high quality video and photo viewing/taking, and the incredibly cool ability to set an MP3 as a ringtone. Also comes with wires to link the the PC Disadvantages: Large. Takes ages to write a comma in a text.
I was bored of my NEC e313. I wanted a phone with some of the more modern features, such as bluetooth. This was because I loved the idea of being able to share my pictures and videos for free.
So I turned to my local Carphone Warehouse. After browsing through stupidly expensive phones, I came across a large yet somewhat attractive phone called the a835. I was drawn by the two-tone silver and dark grey shell, and the huge screen, and the fact that ... ...including fifteen pounds worth of credit.
Ten minutes later and I am at home, charging it up. Yeah, I know, it is meant to have a "Good long charge overnight" but who ever does that before they play about for a bit first? The first thing I noticed was that although it is about half a centimetre smaller than the 313, it is also considerably heavier. It is also slightly thicker. The next thing I noticed was the biggest speaker I have ever seen on ...

Advantages: excellent features, good quality! Disadvantages: its the size of a brick (literally!)
The Motorola A835 is one of the current phones available on the mobile network called ‘3’. I work for the mobile phone retailer The Link, and in January we offered customers 100 pounds cashback if they signed up to a contract on 3 with this A835. As I was due a new contract myself, this offer was too good to refuse, and hence I am now an A835 owner!

Owned by Hutchison 3G, this network is the only one at present to offer 3G services in the UK. 3G services include video calling (one of the main selling points of the network) which allows users to see each other while on a call. In addition, other 3G services include video downloads and quick access to information. With 3’s services (accessible on this phone using a dedicated white triangle key) you can view ...

The A385 is quite large, it will just about fit in your pocket and the unit is quite heavy for a mobile phone. This aside it is certainly a stylish phone, sleek and stylish colouring and nice to hold.
The display quality is unfaultable, bright and an excellent colour range. The display works nicely with the two integrated cameras. The cameras take reasonable quality photographs and digital videos and even boasts digital zoom and limited controls ... ...Photos and videos can be sent to others via mms, bluetooth and IRDA link. I have downloaded some videoe from my 3G provider and the playback is really quite good. Mp4 video format is supported and there is a surprising amount of space to store videos. The battery is used up incredibly quickly, i have owned the phone for 5 days and have charged it three times, the handsfree kit seems to consume battery life rapidly.
Text messaging on the phone is ...

Advantages: Great picture quality and focus speed Disadvantages: Poor performance and reliability
...This will be something that Motorola will need to look into in the future, to ensure that the new models don't suffer the same fate. My replacement phone does seem to be OK, for the moment at least. Also the reception of 'Three' isn't great in some areas the 3G reception is appalling. At times you can't even make a call or send a text, let alone use the WAP service. This is very frustrating, as you have to constantly check you have some reception. ... ...find some. Maintaining any reception is another challenge in itself. There is a feature that does allow you to make an emergency call if you don't have enough receptio to make a standard call.
I came across one really good thing about this phone a couple of weeks ago. You are able to re-arrange the menus and sub-menus to cater your needs. This has allowed me to move my 'messages' option to the top of my list on the main menu. I use this feature ...

Advantages: Video recording and calling Disadvantages: size and weight
...found.
Disadvantages:
The Motorola A835 is quite big and weighs a lot, (168 grams), and has no built in games. Downloading games is free but every time you play them it costs from 25-50p. Downloading ringtones costs a lot (2 pounds), but before you download any ringtones you can listen to them. - which is good to find out if you like the ringtone or if you want to record them. The Motorola A835 also has no changeable facias.
About the Network ... ...days and the minimum top up amount is 15 pounds. The advantage for being on three is that you can make video calls. (Same as normal calls, but you can see moving images of the other person and vice-versa, but only works if you are on three).
I would recommend this network and phone if you spend 15 pounds or more a month on calls or text messages. If you get a phone on this network on pay as you go it is basically pay monthly except for the fact ...

Advantages: Cheap good quality phones (at least in my experience...) AWESOME Value-for money, range of advanced services Disadvantages: Per minute billing, top up lost after thirty days, variable coverage and network quality (though this has improved recently),0800 and 0845 numbers NOT included in your regular allowance.
I first had a brush with 3 back in January 2004 when I purchased a MotorolaA835 on Videotalk 500. It was a mixed experience and to cut a long story short I terminated my account with them.
Well things change and due to absolute necessity, I purchased an NEC e616v on 3 PAYG and I've been pleasantly surprised by the major improvements I've experienced. I joined a queue of about twenty in my local Superdrug store just before Christmas and purchased it for £44.95 inc 50 mins of airtime and £5 woth of extras inc video downloads ringtunes etc. Give-away or what?
Of course 3 have priced their handsets so that they offer outstanding value for money and they are confident they will make up the subsidy over the lifetime of the handset with the customers call spen, but thats fair enough in my opinion.
Ok, so what does Three offer ...
Advantages: Great Style and a good sound Disadvantages: a bit costly..£50
This is an excellent bluetooth headset that I have been using for a month, which I previously used with my MotorolaA835, and am currently using with a Nokia 7600 and have tried on my mates sony ericsson T610. It is easy to set up with your mobile and is compatable with most bluetooth mobile phones. It retails for around £50.
The sound quality is excellent and the battery life is really good. It is signifanctly better than the model below the Jabra BT200 which is about £10 less. It is one of the best bluetooth headsets for battery life when compared with the others as it has around 8 hours talk time and 250 hours standby; I only need to charge once a week! The buttons are conveniently located on the earpiece to adjust the volume. You can also use it for voice dialling and other simple functions on your phone if it is compatible ...
Advantages: Easy to hear and be heard, cuts out background noise, good price Disadvantages: Personally I find it difficult to keep it on my ear
I bought this product to go with my very first bluetooth phone (MotorolaA835 reviewed seperately).
I was working in London a lot and wanted to be able to keep my phone out of sight in my bag, also when shopping or out somewhere noisy I never hear the phone so this seemed like an ideal solution.
The Jabra BT200 was at the best price for a bluetooth headset £39.99 and I bought mine from Amazon.co.uk but they are widely available at this price now.
I had a lot of problems at first, but this was down to the phone not the headset. Despite this I had contacted the Jabra support and they were very helpful.
The phone was reviewed as the most comfortable headset around. I found it very uncomfortable at first and it took a while to get used to.
When someone rings me the headset first gives a little warning chime before ringing ...
