of the cost of original manufacturers and can be used in many makes and models of digital device. Rechargeable digital batteries are rated in "mAh" which stands for "milli-ampere hours". This rating is used to state the storage capability of a battery, e.g. a 1000mAh battery would be capable of delivering 1000mA of current consistently for one hour whereas a 2000mAh battery would deliver the same 1000mA of current for two hours. Li-on rechargeable digital batteries can deliver 40% more capacity than comparably sized NiCd batteries and weigh less than the nickel-based batteries and develop no memory effect. A built-in microprocessor safeguards the cells by limiting maximum voltage and by protecting against deep discharge, short circuit and overload.Brought to you byU-BopThe Accessories Boutique

When I went out for a new phone back in early 2004 I was looking for a phone that did everything that a phone could do. A combination PDA and telephone, with a camera and all the trimmings.
A good all-rounder if you don't mind the size.
Swayed partly by my liking of Three's phone tariffs, as I was moving away from Pay As You Go on another network, my choice of phones was a little limited.
After a fair bit of research I decided on the Motorola a925. Very easy to pick up and use, there wasn't anything I needed to refer to the handbook to understand, it was all intuitive and simple to navigate.
The phone comes with a fair amount of inbuilt applications (clock / calendar / todo list / web-browser / 1.2 megapixel digital camera / mp3 player / dictaphone) and because it is running SymbianOS you can very easily download more. I have Nethack running on mine, for example. At a glance, it appears to be an A920 but with added bluetooth functionality.
Battery Life is one of my concerns. It isn't nearly as close to the quoted figures as I'd like it to be. Detailed at approx 90hrs standby, I have never managed to get it to reach 48 hours, even when I don't use the phone, and usually have to charge it every night to avoid random shut-downs during the day. On the plus side, they are kind enough to supply two batteries, and a charger which can deal with both the phone, and the spare battery at the same time, though it's a bit of a shame if you have to carry a spare battery around.
Size is the other concern, although not much of an issue for me, this phone is seriously chunky. It does provide a good quality large screen, at 208x320 resolution you have plenty of space to play with, though that does increase the size of the device to a whopping 148 x 60 x 24 mm.
Finally, there appears to be an underlying problem with the phone's operating system, whereby it will crash unexpectedly and the screen will appear to 'dissolve'. Customer Services know this is an issue and can only offer to take the phone back for "repairs" where it seems they just hard-reset it, re-flash the ROM and send it back to you.
The phone is fairly robust - I've dropped it, sat on it, dropped it some more, trodden on it, and though I doubt the screen itself would survive a lot of punishment, the large plastic surround does an excellent job of keeping everything protected.
The phone has a built-in camera and mp3 players, although internally the phone can only store 8MB, they come with a 32MB SD Card which can be swapped out with others. I have read of other people using up to 1GB SD cards in theirs successfully, but Motorola only detail that 256MB cards can be used.
The camera is as good as could be hoped for from a 2004 1.2 megapixel phone camera. Exposure is bad in general and pictures come out very grainy, but with a bit of photoshopping this could be a good substitute if you really don't have space to take a camera with you as well.
Video calling is about as good quality as any other phone I've tried. Things are good if there is low motion, but as soon as things start to move you get the old blocky distortion effect as the compression tries to keep up.
MMS messaging now works between all networks. Back when I first tried it in 2004 it was faulty and would only work between other three customers.
Internet support is there in the phone, alas Three(UK) have limited the access to only their own internet. If you have a computer nearby you can bluetooth to it and get on the regular internet that way, but if you have a computer close enough to bluetooth to, you're better off just using the computer!
Back when I got it, I would have rated it a 3/5 but since the network has improved a little, coverage and receiption are better and some of the quirks have been ironed out I have upgraded it to a 4.
The phone comes with an in-built GPS receiver. I have never tried any Symbian applications which use this functionality, but the built in "Quick Map" was able to provide me with a map of my immediate area.... useful if you were to ever get lost!
Pricing: Back in 2004 it cost £99 with a new phone package, these days I believe you can get it for free with a new phone package if you shop around or ask the right people in Superdrug and ask for a price-match with an internet site, (although prices are usually quoted at £40 approx or £150 without a phone package).
Advantages: Big screen, Lots of features Disadvantages: Big, Big Phone!
I was in the market for a new phone and on this occasion I was not fussed about which network, I was just looking for a good deal. I went round all the usual shops (The Link, Carphone Warehouse, Phones4U etc) but stumbled into Superdrug, and tucked in the corner was a 3 shop. I had a look t the phones there and this one really took my fancy, especially as on the talk plan I went for it was free!
This is a big phone at approx 15cm x 6cm x 2.5cm and ... ...the old fashioned!). Those are the bad points. On the upside it comes supplied with two batteries (which if you are like me and let your phone run flat all the time is a god send, as I don't have to leave it at home recharging), also it comes with a desktop cradle which you can connect to your PC via USB and synchonise your info.
Features of the phone itself are that it is Bluetooth enabled, the screen is large at 208 by 320 (and can be used as ...

Advantages: Lots of features, Big screen, Good camera Disadvantages: A bit big, battery life not the best, You cant install programs on memory card
...I had this phone on the 3 network for about three months and had a lot of hassle with it. Thankfully the good people at 3 changed the phone for a motorolaA925. There both pritty much the same only the A925 has bluetooth and looks a bit better and thankfully its made a bit better.
There's lots of software available from varius places that can really spice up your A920, stuff like IR remote control(for changing tv and video using phone) GPS (To find your way anywhere) Smartmovie(For watching full movies in great quality in widescreen) to name just a few.
The battery life of this phone is not very good. If your using something like the mp3 player the battery life is not to bad but videos really do kill that battery fast. Because this phone is based on a PDA when you open something like messaging, and then move to calender...

...---My experiance with Motorola---
I have been with three for a whole year now, and have gone through
3x MotorolaA835
1x MotorolaA925
So what happened? Well my first a835 stopped working, just crashed, my second would not send text messages and my 3rd kept loosing the signal.
Not to mention battery life, it needed charging every 2 days, and after every voice call.
My a925 had even worse battery life of 1 day, straight from the box. Also both of them are brick sized.
---A convert from Nokia?---
Now I have the A1000. I have had it a month and its brilliant. It is the size of an actual mobile phone, it has all the features, it comes with a desktop charger .... BRILLIANT idea, you just come home, and put it on the stand, and it charges, easier then finding a plug socket. Only problem is it only comes with one charger...
