If you’ve read my op about my Nokia 3310, you’ll know that I had to bring that mobile back to have it repaired, or should I say formatted. Anyway, while I’m waiting for my 3310 they gave me a Motorola c520.

FIRST APPROACH
===============
When I held it for the first time, I couldn’t believe how ugly it was. On top of that it’s big and heavy. It feels like a receiver of a regular phone instead of a mobile. You better have big pockets if you want to take this mobile with you. And if someone calls you in the middle of the street… hide!
When looking at the screen you’ll notice that it is clear to read, but that just like with the Motorola cd930 it’s too small to be practical, especially for text messages. Actually it’s not the size that comes short but the resolution.

PROS
+++++

1) It’s really strong. You could compare it with the cd930, which is very strong too. I dropped the c520 two days ago –actually I threw it by accident-, but the plastics didn’t loosen a bit and the screen is all right too. I have to admit though that I enjoyed the sound of this so hated mobile banging against the floor.

2) It’s cheap. Here in Belgium you could buy it Orange shops for 20£. But I guess they aren’t selling them anymore. If you would cross a second-hand you’d probably notice it’s even cheaper. However, don’t even consider buying it.

3) Reception seems ok. I have had few problems of reception, but that’s probably also due to the fact that Orange has improved its covering in Belgium.

4) Being big, it has also big keys. I know that especially elder people don’t always like small mobiles because the keys are too small for them to use. The keys of the c520 are a little hard too though.

CONS
+++++

1) As I said before it’s a dinosaur comparing to modern phones: ugly, big and heavy. But it’s not only big, there is large external antenna too, which makes the phone even more unpractical!

2) The quality of the sound is very poor. It’s maybe not fair to compare it with a Nokia 3310, but even if I compare it with my old cd930 it doesn’t stand comparison. When my girlfriend calls me for example, she always uses a hands free kit, which has of course consequences for the quality of the signal sent. With my 3310 I could always understand her, but since I’m using the c520 I have to ask her to speak closer to her microphone.

3) The standby and talk time is very poor as well. I you’re a regular user, batteries won’t last more than two days. Again, much shorter than a 3310 would, but much shorter than a cd930 as well.

4) The use of menus is just like other Motorola’s, unpractical that is:
- It’s got a “quick access menu” which is of no real use.
- If you get out of SMS editor you loose what you’ve typed.
- After you typed your SMS you better remember the number you’re sending it to because you won’t be able to look it up in your phone book!
- When you want to get out of your telephone book you have to delete the number you’re looking at.
- The sound volume is impossible to regulate without the workbook. Actually it’s almost impossible to regulate!
- SMS are unpractical to type. I didn’t expect T9 text input, but at least an easier way to enter messages. Suppose you want to type “no”. On a normal mobile you type “n”, wait a second until the cursor goes to the next square and then you type “o”. Well, with this phone you have to move yourself the cursor to the right if you need a letter, which is formed with the same key!
- If you get an SMS from someone you’ve entered in your phone book, the name doesn’t appear.
Ergonomics are a real mess as you can see, so please give me back my Nokia as soon as possible!

5) The number features is very restricted. Most striking example: the absence of a clock. Being a student who doesn’t like to be stressed, I have no watch, and when on rare occasions I wanted to know how late it was I always relied upon my previous mobiles. But with the c520 I’m lost, there is no clock! Other things it lacks: an alarm clock, a vibra-call, and predictive text input. There are also no games, no WAP, no editing of ring tones and no possibility of changing the operator logo, but if you’ve read my op about the 3310 you’ll know what I think of those!

6) There is also something wrong with the number of messages you can store. I know I can store 10 messages on my SIM card, I did that with my previous phones. But with this phone I can only store 8 messages! I wonder how they managed to do that!

CONCLUSION
===========
If you’ve actually really read the op, I think you can make the conclusion yourself: even if it’s outdated, this phone has never been a good mobile. Believe me, it’s not even worth 5£ …

Have no recollection of reading and rating this op previously. Maybe my body was taken over by aliens?! Well I've rated it as it deserves now ;-)
