Having purchased my new Motorola L6 with free £15 airtime and bluetooth headset, it was time to have a little play about and see how good each item was.
Now I have to say from the outset that I am a gadget freak, I buy them, play with them then do what everyone else does with them and store them in a drawer somewhere. So I had no reason to believe that this smart looking Motorola H300 bluetooth headset was going to be any different. ...glancing briefly at the accompanying instructions I found myself ready to go in under a minute. Even for the totally uninformed this time scale is easily achievable being that all you really have to do is insert the AAA battery.

On removing the rather primitive packaging and glancing briefly at the accompanying instructions I found myself ready to go in under a minute. Even for the totally uninformed this time scale is easily achievable being that all you really have to do is insert the AAA battery.
There are 3 buttons and a small blue light on the funky looking device, the top small button is volume up the bottom small button is volume down and the larger button of the three on the main part of the unit is power on/off and call button. The blue light indicates that the unit is operational.
Another quick glance at the instructions and I was almost finished. Power up the bluetooth on the mobile phone you wish to connect to the headset with. A flick through the menus and hey presto.
Another few menu sets and my mobile was searching for devices. This process does take a few minutes since the phone isn't just searching for the H300 it's searching for all available devices. Check the H300 has been found, and so has an H500 which has turned out to be that of my neighbour. A small message appears asking if I want to bond with either device. One scroll down to select the H300 and voila my phone and headset are paired.
I did a few tests indoors to make sure everything was fine. The volume buttons worked great and one press of the on/off button and my phone asked for a voice tag to connect too. A voice tag is a tag you record on your mobile in the contacts so that you can voice dial if you wish, most phones have a similar feature these days.
So on the word of command ANNE my phone was dialling my beloved. The sound was excellent and the reception very good.............I was quite impressed. Now that everything was working great what were the occasions when this device would be handy or necessary. Well when driving this device is far better than the usual hands free since it is automatically connected to the phone and can bet set to auto answer. One press on the large button on the earpiece and you can phone anyone in your contacts that you have attached a voice tag too.
You can obviously use it too whilst going about your usual daily business, it is at this point that the nerd bit comes in. Foe some reason wearing the device outside of the house or car became a bit of a problem. Not reception wise or anything technical, I just felt like a total nerd, wally, ****head, whateva. So it is for this reason and this reason only that I do not use it outdoors very often. The flashing blue light indicating functionality did not help the situation at all since in dull areas it is quite bright and I felt it was only causing more people to glance in my direction.
I use it a lot whilst driving and have found it in this instance to be invaluable. My H300 came free with my phone but should you wish to purchase this neat and effective device it will cost you around £29.99 from ASDA. Or for £9.99 you might wish to use the less conspicuous traditional hands free kit which looks more like a personal hi-fi earpiece.
So this is one gadget that will not be permanently in the drawer although you wil not see me wearing it in public you may if your lucky catch me wearing it at the wheel. I daresay once the price of these gadgets comes down we will see more and more people wearing them and who knows in the future when this occurs I might well join them.
Advantages: Simple To Install and Use Disadvantages: Volume Control Buttons are not easy to use
Now that I have a Bluetooth phone the next step was to get a Bluetooth headset for 4 reasons:-
1: Safety whilst driving it really annoys me when I see folk on the phone in their cars. I have had a few near misses on my bike only to see some buffoon on their phone. It is downright dangerous to use a handset whilst driving.
2: To pretend that my car is some futuristic spacecraft flying through the cosmos at an unimaginable speed. Some would argue ... ...toy 4: I got this for free with my phone due to some deft negotiation on my part. For people with lesser negotiating skills then tough titty you will have to pay in the region of 30 quid for this one from a suitable mobile phone shop.
The last two reasons are probably the most important ones though the first one should be the most important one.
The headset is powered by a single AAA battery and has up to 30 hours talk time and 30 days standby ...

Advantages: I don't get shouted at Disadvantages: I look like fool
...first, mainly that it was motorola and my phone was a sony ericsson. But that little obstacle turned out not to be an obstacle at all, as it doesn't matter!! Im also one of those people who would rather spend a week working out how to use it than a couple of minutes reading the instructions, so i was very pleasantly suprised to find that, after charging you just hold down the call button (it has a phone on it!) down until the blue light switches ... ...comes up Motorola H3 when you are searching for it, and once its paired it never has to be done again, so the instructions say!! I've only had a paired a week though so there's still time for every thing to go wrong!!
Now came the fun part, working out how to use it!! To be completely hands free, you hold down the call button and say the name of who you want to call, but alas, no matter how many times i try to match my voice to my recorded voice ...
