I 'm not into new fangled gadgets;
I usually hang onto old technology as though my life depends on it!
My old mobile phone had served me well.
It was only because the sellotape, that had held it together for so long, had lost the will to carry on, that I decided that it must be time to move on myself.
From a "black and white world", with monophonic tones, encased in clumsy clothes, I needed to join the rest of civilisation, in a world full of colour and polyphonic sounds, enhanced by the latest fashionable lightweight designs that adorn today's mobile phones.
So, as I bid a sad farewell to my old Motorola brick, I dropped it into the black bin with a great big thud. It kicked into life for one last time, to play a haunting version of Waltz Sing Matilda by Rolf Harris on his Stylophone! A very moving moment, I nearly dived back in to save it before I courageously shut the dustbin lid on my old faithful for the last time!

I drove into Birmingham to find a replacement straight away, in order to forget the past .
As it was such a daunting experience, I took my wife for moral support.

I need not have worried; the first shop we came to, the Car Phone Warehouse, seemed to have everything that we needed.
As we entered, we were immediately approached by the ubiquitous spotty youth, who had obviously sensed an easy prey. I quickly turned on a sixpence, ready to leave the store. However they had trained him well, and he had blocked my exit with a friendly, but goofy smile, and a welcome that, although typically inaudible for a teenager, was friendly and polite and one which managed to put me at ease.

I told him my requirements;
1.Pay as you go
2.Not too expensive
3.Not too bulky (Bricks are out!)
4.Plus, ever since I had watched a motorist, video an accident scene, to use as evidence, if necessary, (Brilliant idea!) I wanted a phone with a camera!

He pointed at the Motorola L6 and told me the price.
Virgin (the phone company, not the spotty youth) was selling it for £50 with £5worth of free calls already loaded on!
I took one look at it and thought there must be a catch!
It looked really modern and if it had been a Catwalk model it would have been a size 0!
It had loads of features, more than I could understand or cope with and it was available in pink or silver! I liked it immediately, and so did my wife.
Sensing a catch, we left the shop!
As we could not trust our own judgement my wife phoned our 16-year-old son up for advice! How the tables turn!
He knew the model, and was so impressed with the price he asked us to buy him one!
Sue, my wife, was so impressed she asked me to buy her one!
I wasn't so impressed, I ended up buying 3!

We've had them for about 3 months now and here is the verdict;

SIZE
47mmx 110mmx 10mm (in English this is very slim! 4.5in x 2in x 3/8in)
It is so light and small; I spend a lot of time looking for it!
BATTERY LIFE
Seems pretty good, but this obviously depends on how often and what you use the phone for. I generally find it lasts for about 4 days, but then I don't use it that often. My son however uses it as much as any other teenager, IE it's always red hot!
He recharges his every 2 days and it doesn't take too long to do. 2 hours and he's away again! I usually do my recharging in a relaxed manner, plugging it in overnight and letting it recharge in it's own time while I recharge my own batteries.
HANDSET FACIA
Simple in design, following usual format, with a central dial to help you to navigate and scroll .The screen is set up to show each of the functions in picture form, so just scroll to the feature you want, select, and away you go.
Everything is easy to access and use, and the younger you are, the easier it is to use!
I have 2 problems with this phone, which must be the same for all phones, which do not have a cover to hide the buttons, when not in use.
I am always accidentally accessing the phone when carrying it in my pocket. I have made loads of unknown calls and accessed the web without knowing. I never know whether I have actually made connection but it is very concerning when you discover this.
Yes, you can lock the keyboard, to stop this happening, but I either forget (The age thing again!) or as I am convinced, you knock the keypad that often in your pocket that eventually you hit the right combination and unlock the world to the Internet!
The second annoying thing is that the web access or launch browser button is the same button that is used to select all functions and if you press this select button when you first turn it on, it automatically starts to connect to the browser! Again I never know whether this is costing me anything, but I could well do without this happening, and as such I feel this is a poor design.

FEATURES
The camera
This is very basic, but allows you to take and store over a 100 pictures. The quality is not brilliant but serves a purpose. I suppose this is why it is so cheap, my daughter has the next model up and this was much more expensive and takes much better quality photos!
Sending pictures by message is a simple process that I mastered quite quickly, which backs up my statement that it's simple!
If you are clever enough or can be bothered (more likely!) you can create multimedia albums, and edit with music. Amazing or what?
The video recorder
Again very basic, but manages to record sound along with the not so clear footage. Ideal if you want to capture a moment, but haven't got your camcorder!
I was with my daughter last week, when she bought her first new car. As she got into it and proudly drove off, I was able to capture the proud moment she left me behind standing on the garage forecourt all on my own! . Happy Days!
Again you can send video by message MMS
CONNECTIONS
Able to download to computers
Able to make fax calls
Able to go hands free
Able to connect to internet
BLUETOOTH
Haven't used this by myself, but my son set it up the other day, to transfer some of his downloads to my phone free of charge! Again amazing and out of my league!
So I can't say much more. Except for:
If someone sends you "Pete's greeting from Big Brother," don't use it! My son had set it up to come on when I received a message. I was sitting in the doctor's waiting room last week when Pete's profanities suddenly drowned the deathly silence!
Try finding a lightweight, modern but obscene little L6 in your pocket when a room full of shocked OAPs and young mothers give you the death stare.
At times like this I dream of my old Motorola brick!
.Am I really ready?
In conclusion I think I am.
Overall the L6 is just what the doctor ordered! It made her laugh anyway!
Its worth the money, and you have to remember to move with the times!!
