The KRZR K1 is my first Motorola and I have to say, probably my last just because the text messaging facilities aren't as good as I expected! I bought it because I was after a pretty phone but this review will entail how it does and doesn't live up to my expectations!
The Looks: This phone is very slim and sleek and is a good size for fitting in your pocket, but not so easy to find in a handbag that's filled with junk! Mine's a metallic blue colour, but I know they come in black and a variety of other colours (including pink!) now. It's a flip phone with a reflective front and a matte back panel and it's quite plain looking, there's not a great deal of fancy design on it but it's shiny enough to make up for that! However, the shiny reflective front shows fingerprints and marks really easily, so if you're the type of person that gets bothered by this sort of thing, it's not for you!
The keypad is a typical Motorola keypad which feels quite strange to use at first
because the buttons aren't raised, but you get used to it! The numbers, letters and symbols on the keys are light blue when lit up and very easy to see in the dark. The screen is a good size and you won't be squinting to see it!
Overall it's simple but nicely designed and has that 'Sleek and Sexy' appeal to it.
The Features: These are pretty standard, obviously you can make phone calls, send messages (text, picture etc.), it has a 2 mega pixelcamera with 8 x digital zoom and takes photos and videos, audio player, voice commands, bluetooth, records audio and has polyphonic and mp3 ringtones.
The voice recorder records really clearly and picks up a lot of sound and when you record something and play it back, it comes out as very loud and very clear, which is really good compared to other recorders I've used!
The audio player is really good and this is the main marketing point of this phone. However, I have an Ipod, so I don't really use this feature much on my phone and have never used it with earphones. However, when I have listened to music on there it's been very clear and doesn't have that 'tinny' sound to it so it actually does sound like it's supposed to!
The camera is good too and if you flip the phone shut you can use the small external screen on the front of the phone to take photos with and you just press a button on the side of the phone to take the shot. Great if you're a poser and like to take photos of yourself because you can see what you're going to look like! However, sometimes the camera causes the phone to freeze up and then turns the screen black until you press a key - this is usually if you're using the external screen and flip the phone open again too quickly. I've also found that sometimes it automatically saves pictures without me pressing anything and I can't delete them until I turn the phone off and back on again because otherwise it says that they're in use!
When making calls, the quality is good and you can adjust the volume or use speaker phone if you wish. You can answer by just flipping the phone open or use 'Push to talk'. I've never really had any real problems with using the phone as a phone!
The text messaging is where my biggest problems lie because it's simply too slow! I tend to use predictive text but texting in any mode is very slow and the screen takes a long time to catch up with what I've actually written. It also has no permanent dictionary for words that it doesn't 'know' so if you use these kinds of words a lot, it's a pain because you have to change modes and type them in every time because it can only remember a certain amount of new words. Also, it doesn't seem to 'know' some words which are common in the use of English Language that were in the predictive text program on previous phones but not on this one. It really depends how much you text and I text a lot so this phone doesn't really suit me as I find the texting frustrating still, even after 9 months with it!
Other bits: The phone comes with software and a lead so you can download pictures and music onto your phone from your computer. If you have a Mac forget it because the software only works for Windows as I found out! Luckily everyone else in my family has a Windows computer but the software wasn't really very good and could have been much easier to use!
The battery life is good until you start taking a lot of photos or using features other than what a phone is really used for, but this is the same with any phone! It seems to charge up again quite quickly though so if the battery dies you won't have to wait too long to get back to it!
It seems to be quite good value for money, (£99.95 for new pink version at Carphone Warehouse on pay as you go) but this is always open to interpretation and what you want from your phone. If you want an all singing, all dancing, will cook your dinner for you phone then this isn't it. But it's great and what it does and is good if you want some of the best features but without a massive price tag!
Summary: Good: - Good camera and video recording - Good audio on phone, hence why it is advertised so heavily with this feature! - Looks good (until you touch it when it goes smeary!) - No problems at all when making or receiving calls - Menus are easy to use - Lots of shortcuts mean ease of use
Not so good - Texting is slow and predictive text facility isn't great - Metallic front shows marks and dirt easily - Software that comes with it isn't very good
