On March 27th 2007, I first got my Motorola K1, initially disappointed that I had the silver one over the smart cosmic blue colour I felt slightly deflated. Never the less I decided to give the phone a go and happily plugged in the charger for its first charge which took around 3 hours, which considering it was a brand new phone wasn't too long.
Starting the phone up for the first time it does seem to be a little slow and unresponsive, but give it a chance it soon springs into life. Depending on which network your phone is locked to, or unlocked will depends on your initial wallpaper. With around 20 to choose from its easy top find a wallpaper you like, or even if you're daring enough to use a photo to fill your wallpaper space. Which ultimately I ended up doing as I got a bit bored of the pre-loaded wallpapers.
The buttons are fairly easy to use they don't confuse if you've had a Motorola before. Even if you haven't they are pretty self explanatory within the manual which for being a foreign company is very well written. I did have a problem with the keypad as after 4 or 5 months the paint began chipping leaving a disgusting colour metal especially in the call start and end buttons, which is particularly unsightly. Not only that but the paint on the side buttons, the Motorola 'M' on the battery cover came off which make the phone almost ashamed to be holding. Perhaps this is just me wanting a very aesthetically pleasing phone but it wasn't particularly attractive.
Despite its many faults the camera was pretty good, had a good quality photo but the photos were particularly large at 2 mega pixel but that was easily sorted with a new 1Gb micro SD memory card. There is another quite handy feature within this phone which I do think will attract those that do not actually want a 3G phone but want 2 take pictures perhaps of themselves for those infamous 'myspace' photos. By holding down the side button it is possible to take photos with the lid of the phone closed.
The music player is brilliant the speakers are very good, when you have recorded something from a convert, as it doesn't really crackle as much as you would expect. That is a big plus to the phone. A big downside to the K1 is the battery life (admittedly I do text a lot,) the battery life is pretty appalling at a few days at most without needing a recharge, and the time it took to charge is very slow.
I got my phone from carphone warehouse with a years guarantee on it, tank god for that! After 5 months it began to turn itself off and the quality at 5 months isn't really acceptable considering the high profile company it is made by.
Now you can pick up the K1 in almost and phone shop and possibly supermarkets and of course eBay. I paid over a hundred pound for mine and I don't think it was worth that amount of money, but with it being fifty pounds and under I see it is about the right price for the features compared to the opposition manufacturers and phones on the market.
