I was first introduced to Windows smartphones when a work colleague got himself an Orange SPV200. I was first introduced to Windows smartphones when a work colleague got himself an Orange SPV200. "Now if only someone would make a clamshell version of that", I seem to recall thinking.
Well someone did, and it's the MPX200!
We'll take a look at the "Windows for Smartphone" operating system first, as it is relevant for all phones which use it (a bit like PC's using windows are all similar). The system on the MPX200 is Smartphone 2002, which doesn't support Bluetooth. Later phones use 2003, which does.
The OS (operating system) gives you a "home" page, rather like a desktop on a PC - in fact much more like the desktop on a Windows PDA device. A scrollable list of icons at the top of the screen shows the most recently used programs for quick access. Moving down the screen you get the service provider and the time. Below this are the appointment reminders, Email / SMS / MMS (multi media messages) indicators and the current profile (how the phone will operate with calls)
At the bottom of the screen you can choose to explore the program list or call up your contact list. Contacts are stored in "Pocket Outlook", which also allows download of emails (you can use your current email address for this, selecting to just download headers first if preferred to save time / space). Contacts can have multiple numbers and you can hold all sorts of info like birthdays, addresses, email etc. When you call up the contact list to make a call, pressing left or right on the control pad changes the number you dial for them, which is a really handy feature.
Moving into the program list you will find Pocket Internet Explorer - not just a WAP browser, it is HTML compatible but won't support frames (windows on websites, basically). Most simple sites work quite well, at a speed similar to 28K dial up. Don't expect to browse anything too big, but I've used the main page of the Met Office site, as well as Streetmap, believe it or not! I also managed to browse for .wav files and save them to the phone as ringtones. You can set up favourites (such as Google) for easy access and you have options to turn off pictures (to speed things up) and to resize pages to fit the screen width if required.
As well as this, Pocket MSN Messenger is included! This is quite a hoot to use as you can set up on your existing profile if you have one. Once you and your friends get used to the fact that you can't type quickly on a phone it's brilliant!
The other major software inclusion is a pocket version of Windows Media Player. It only plays sound files but makes a good MP3 player. You can actually download a video clip player for this system (for free too!)
You can connect a Windows smartphone to a PC using Active Sync and a USB cable (comes with the phone usually). The cable also charges the phone whilst it's plugged in. You use the PC to explore folders on the phone, just like in Windows. You can drag and drop files in either direction and install software to the phone.
Various service providers will also put their own software on the phone. It usually gives device management info and similar.
So that covers the basics of the system, now what about the phone?
First impressions are good - the MPX200 has a very stylish black case, which opens to show a similarly stylish interior. The screen is a 176 x 200 pixel 65000 colour, which is very clear to read. On the keypad side of the body, there are the two "soft" keys (which are used to make choices on screen) and between them a directional pad with a blue "action" button in the middle (does the same job as a mouse LH button, essentially).
Next down are the buttons to answer and end calls, followed by the "home" and "back" buttons, which either take you to the desktop page or take you back to your last action (where possible) or previous web page (just like the "back" option on Internet Explorer).
On the left side of the body is the power button and above it a thumbwheel which alters the call / ring volume up or down. Very easy to use in-call too. It is also used to record voice memos by pushing it in. Voice dialling is also activated this way (more on this later).
On the right hand side is the earpiece socket and below it is the memory card slot. You can use SD or MMC cards on the MPX200 and store programs, game data, MP3 files and more on them. The supplied card is 16Mb but you can go bigger if you need to.
There is an infra red port on the side of the phone and you can also use the phone as a USB modem.
You won't find a camera. Personally i'm not enamoured by camera phones but to some it will be missed. You can buy an add-on camera though (£60 last time i looked!).
This layout is extremely easy to use. I actually find other mobiles difficult to get on with after using this phone for a year!
So that's the layout covered. What about using it?
The phone features an "Active Flip" which answers and ends calls as you open and close the phone. The hinge is a steel bar and very sturdy indeed, the phone opening and closing with a positive 'click'. Call quality is good, although it struggles a little in weak signal areas (no worse than my wife's S/E T610 though). During a call you can hold down the green button to activate a very clear speakerphone.
The headset isn't so good though. People will struggle to hear you and the earpiece is too tinny for clear listening. I also can't find another manufacturer's earpiece for the phone. Lack of bluetooth is a real disadvantage here.
The vibration function is very strong. You shouldn't miss that going off very easily!
.wav files can be used as ringtones, which is a great feature. Download virtually any WAVE file from the 'net and use it as your ringer! (not all types are supported). You can assign each of your contacts their own ringtone as well.
Text and email is handled by Pocket Outlook. It has the Inbox, Outbox etc and you move between folders as you would on a PC (almost). Remember to keep deleting the old stuff though, to save space. This system could take a few improvements in my opinion (like being able to delete more than one message at a time from the inbox). It isn't very user friendly when it comes to downloading emails either. Overall though it's pretty handy.
Also in outlook is the appointments calendar, where you can set reminders with alarms and have a week, month or day view of it all. Very useful!
It's easy to set the phone up as you like it. You can change the home page layout, with limitations, or you can download some pretty nifty new ones from sites such as "Cool Smartphone". The outer screen can also be reconfigured, but i like the standard full info one, with battery life, signal strength, mute/vibration indicator, time and date. This screen also illuminates when a call or text comes in.
Speaking of downloads, There are quite a few applications available. Some you have to buy and others are free (see the website mentioned above for more info). Some of the games are incredible too: If anyone is familiar with "Links" golf, I have the smartphone version on my MPX200 and it's incredible. People's jaws drop when they see it in action.
There is so much more to this phone, especially when you start to obtain software for it, that I could go on for another 1000 words or so, but I won't. The main points are covered above. It's time to move on to the things which need fixing for future models.
As I mentioned earlier, the thumbwheel is pressed in to activate voice dialling. Unfortunately the wheel is too sensitive in the up/down action and the phone tends to head for volume adjustment rather than the voice dial option. This renders the feature (which would have been useful as when it does work it works really well) useless. Combine it with the poor headset and the phone is unusable as a handsfree device.
Bluetooth is a major omission. This would have allowed a choice of useable headsets. It's because the phone launched with the 2002 OS rather than 2003. Hopefully the next model will not be let down in such a fashion.
My next big gripe is the battery life. You don't really get more than a day and a half from a charged battery. Not good if you're going camping or you forget to charge it. I managed to get a USB power adaptor that fits a car lighter socket for £10 and using this I can charge the phone in the car. The next model's battery needs to be better though.
And finally, this being a Windows device, it crashes occasionally! In the worst cases you have to perform a full reset and lose all your settings and installed software. It's only happened once in the last year though.
For me, the pros far outweigh the cons on this device. In fact I'm due to upgrade now and I can't find a single phone i'd rather change to (except perhaps the expensive Sony P910i). I'm going to wait for the MPX220, if it ever makes it out of the factory!
Advantages: Looks great, amazing features, MP3 , internet, messenger .. Amazing Disadvantages: a bit chunky and a little complicated at first.
...as I was………
The Motorola MPX 200 , well first things first PC meets mobile phone ! for those of you that were not aware, ‘cause I wasn’t , Microsoft have now written an operating system for mobile phones known as Microsoft Smartphone. I guess you could say it was an inevitable progression and has been out there, silently and without much advertising, since 2002! Now before I continue I have decided that the best thing to do would be to submit this ... ...secondly for the Smart phone operating system.
THE PHONE – The first thing that grabs you about this phone is the sexy looks, probably the only black phone out on the market that isn’t due to those annoying interchangeable that Nokia are so obsessed with ! Second is the oyster style ! Now oysters were never on my list, I hated them ! I could never understand why time took us from those giant original oysters, to er…. non-oysters and back to oysters ...

Advantages: ALL THE FEATURES - TONNES OF THEM Disadvantages: THE BATTERY LIFE
...to last. I’ve used Motorola walkie-talkies before and you can chuck them round and they just take it. This isn’t too dissimilar. I wouldn’t throw it around, but at the same time I wouldn’t worry too much if I were to drop it a few times. When you open the flip you get a nice reassuring click as it clicks into place, so even if you drop when it’s open it’s pretty solid and won’t just snap the flip off.
RECEPTION QUALITY
Well yup it’s only available ... ...have to say with the Motorola than I did with the siemens but for everything it offers I’m prepared to put up with that as it very little difference.
BATTERY LIFE
Oh…. Nar you don’t want to hear about the battery life… The battery life is weird to say the least. If you leave it in standby it really will run for up to five days without a charge. However if you use it then you can kill it in a day. Talk time I would estimate at only around one hour ...

Advantages: Nice looking, fairly robust Disadvantages: Dreadful battery life. Badly designed software. Overly complicated.
...decent battery life
The Motorola MPX-200 fails on nearly ALL of the above.... as you can guess, I'm pretty hacked off with it!
ON THE PLUS SIDE:
Well, it looks great - shiny black case, silver keys, compact... it look a well engineered, solid phone. The screen is huge, with great colours and resolution. It interfaces seamlessly with Windows XP, and especially Outlook via USB. The sound quality from the MP3 is good. And... errrmmm... that's about ... ...from my network (02) and Motorola was non-existant. When I finally did get WAP fired up (after searching on the Web), the response time was hideous, hardly worthwhile; additionally, the installed software couldn't handle many websites.
Software/Menus! Really badly laid out, with no logical organisation, and no cluses to where key functions might be. It looks like it was designed by the same people who did Windows 95!
I can't begin to tell you how ...

This is my first attempt to review a product here on Ciao, so I hope that this is of some use to you.
Firstly, a bit about the Phone. I upgraded to this phone from a Panasonic X70, and before that I was a 'Nokia man', and to be honest, whilst this phone came close, i'm still into Nokia phones, having for the moment gone back to my Nokia 6310. Not because this phone is that bad, just because I really missed using my 6310. I believe this is one of ... ...and I think that is what appealed to me most. Historically, most clamshell phones I have encountered have been in silver or variant of, whilst other types of phones where generally black or grey, till Nokia introduced the swappable covers. This, I believe, makes this one of the more unique phones on the market, and certainly makes it stand out.

This phone is the successor to the MPX200 smartphone - a potentially great phone which lacked some important features: most noteably bluetooth and a camera. Now the new MPX220 includes these features, and more...
The MPX220 is a clamshell phone with two colour screens: one inside, and one out. The main screen is pretty average. It is a bit on the small side compared to some of the newer smartphones, but the quality is good and the picture is usually ... ...quite useful. Apart from showing the time, date, battery and reception, it can show a caller's ID and picture, and can be used as a mirror for the camera when the phone is closed!
I have found that call quality overall is good, and I very rarely find myself with low reception. One slight problem is that the earphone is a little too quiet in noisy environments (not good on a night out!).
The keypad is great - no problems here. Large and easy to ...

I recently upgraded to one of these and I have to say, after using Samsung and then Sony Ericsson phones for the past 5+ years, I have never used a better phone, period.
When I first went into the phone shop looking to upgrade, the staff told me that the phone I wanted (The MotorolaMPX220) wasn't out, so, because I'd resorted to using my old Samsung M100 (which, incidentally, was one of the first MP3 player phones), due to my T610 having given up the ghost, I had to choose another.
After much deliberation, I decided to go with the Motorola V635. Some friends of mine have had Motorola phones for a while and they hadn't had any issues with their phones, unlike me and my T68, & T610 troubles (but that's another story).
Anyway, onto the phone: -
In total, the phone cost me £20, this after taking off £205 credit I had ...

Nokia 3200
This phone I believe was created for younger mobile users with its new, funky design and bright colours. The ability to cut out your own covers, personalisation is very easy, and this all adds up to a phone suited to the ?teen? market. I have split the review up into different areas of the phone. Starting with the screen.
~Screen~
The screen has 4096 colours over 128 by 128 pixels; it allows 5 lines of font. This is adequate enough; a larger screen would be more expensive and thus take it away from the teen market. I have recently got a new phone, Motorolampx-200 which has 65,000 colours over 176 by 220 pixels, which is by far clearer and larger. But would have cost more, so I can justify the screen on the Nokia 3200 and it does its job well.

with 32MB of SD RAM, a 32MB ROM which holds the Operating System, and 10MB of what is called IPSM memory. IPSM (or Intel Protected Storage Medium) means that system settings are not lost, even if you don't charge it for a month.
The phone does lack a Camera, which Motorola are putting in its replacement, the MPX220. It also lacks Bluetooth or any sort of radio wireless LAN capability. This is more due to the fact that Smartphone 2002 does not have integral Bluetooth capability, and as this phone was released before Windows Mobile for Smartphone 2003, implementation of Bluetooth would have been tricky, time-consuming and expensive.
