Phones are readily becoming the new fashion item, having the latest phone for some people is a must and I have to admit it im one of those people. So when I heard the new Motorola V3x was being realeased I had to get it. I has a masterplan to get my hands on this phone, I was to phone up Vodaphone my current contract provider and tell them I wished to cancel my contract to switch to Three where they were offering the phone on some pretty good deals. Low and behold my plan worked and Vodaphone offered me the phone for free with an amazing price plan which I just couldn't resist, 2 days later and i had my brand new phone. Now to the review.
Looks: The phone is pretty similar to the original V3 range, major difference is the thickness of the phone which has been increased to house the new 2MP camera. The phone is made out of a very
cheap plastic and as i found out very early on this is prone to scratching very easily. I now have a large scratch on the front of my phone where the paint has simply chipped away. The display on the front of the phone is ok to say the least only really use is showing incoming calls and text messages received. On opening the V3 is a very large phone with a very nicely sized display screen. The buttons are nicely moulded into the shell of the phone and aren't protruding. My phone is sprayed in a metallic silver paint but there are other colours available through the different networks like Blue and Black.
Functionality: The phone is currently being sold through its 2mp camera. And this is probabaly its best feature by far, the photo quality is absolutely amazing. You can take pictures either by the lens on the front of the phone or by the one on the inside of the phone (Usually used for Video Calling). The phone has a nice little feature that allows the camera to work when the phone is closed, photos are taken by pressing a button on the side of the phone. Using the front screen to show what is to be captured by the camera. (The quality shown through the front screen isn't great but the picture quality saved is perfect) Being a 3G phone there is the ability to use video calling to another 3G phone but be warned this only works if you receive a 3G signal and so far I have found this signal to be very weak and hard to receive a strong signal. If you are looking to use video calling please check to see if you are in a strong 3G area otherwise forget it. Ringtones are another status symbol. The chance to have the funkiest tune everytime you recieve a phone call or text message and yes you can play a whole MP3 when you receive a text message (Can be quite annoying sometimes). Only tip - Make sure the MP3 track chosen gets straight into the tune, if there is a long build up where the track is quite quiet forget it, the person will hang up before you have even heard your phone. The phone also comes with the standard calendar, alarms, and calculator.
Connectivity: The phone only comes with USB and Bluetooth connections. The bluetooth I am very dissapointed with the phone does not seem to pick up other bluetooth devices very easily. Having run many tests on the phone we found the bluetooth to be very very tempromental. The usb connection is great for transferring files to and from your computer and also charging as you transfer files.
Memory: As well as the inbuilt memory the phone comes with a transflash card, i received a 64mb card but you can purchase larger cards from any computer store or of the internet. The card comes with a special adapter that allows you to clip the transflash card into an SD card the current standard flash card uses by a majority of digital cameras and other phones on the market.
Conclusion - The phone is very nice but it is large and chunky. The sound quality is very good but not the best i have heard compared to the Nokia 8800 or the sony ericsoon k800i. Video calling is a good feature but to be honest rarely used unless you have loads of people on a 3g phone. The camera has to be its best feature, im not a big user of the camera but i have certainly started to use it a lot more now the quality is much much better. Great for capturing those events on a night out. Overall the phone is very good if you can get it from free on a contract by no means go out and spend £100 + on this phone its just not worth it. I would recommend the Nokia 8800 if you want a durable and quality phone.
