The phone I was using before the T720 was a Nokia 8210, which I found very easy to use and also fit into my pocket without looking like I was smuggling bricks into the country. At the time Nokia was the only phone to be seen with, people would give you a dirty look if you pulled out anything lacking the Nokia symbol. Yet, Nokia’s weren’t different anymore, they all looked the same and felt the same, many other phone manufacturers were pushing forwards with new innovations, Bluetooth and colour screens were the new thing, and Nokia weren’t taking any notice.
So then I started to look for something new, the same day I had seen an advert for the Motorola T720, and almost instantly I fell in love. It was indeed a flip phone, but didn’t seem feminine, many flip phones I had seen tended to look curvy and sexy to suit a woman, but not the T720, it was chunky and manly, just like a me.
The next day I went to The Link, when I got there I headed straight for the Motorola section to do some research. The phone was great and the features it had were way ahead of the competition, and then the price hit me, over £200 on pay as you go, a shop worker advised me to look on Ebay, so I did. That’s where I found the phone for £130, so I purchased one.
To begin with the build quality is great, opening the flip is easy as it glides to about a 70-degree angle, as you close the phone you are rewarded with a reaffirming click sound as the flip snaps shut. The screen is big and bright and easy to read. The buttons really did grab my attention, these babies were just over a centimetre wide and 5mm high, and they weren’t fiddly and minute, these keys were designed for a man to use. The numbers on the buttons are lit up by a light blue set of LED’s, making them easy to read at night.
The outside of the phone features an external LCD display, it isn’t in colour but has a lilac glowing background. The external screen has a lot of information on it at any given time; it shows you the time, date, battery level, signal strength and what mode the phone is in e.g. silent, loud. The front part of the phone is also interchangeable, meaning you can customize your phone with many fun and colourful fascias. The focal point of the phone is the Motorola logo situated towards the bottom of the front; if it wasn’t there I guess the phone would look pretty plain.
The sides of the phone feature easy to use buttons, on the left side there are two buttons for adjusting the volume, and on the right side of the phone you will find the voice-dialling button. To dial using voice you hold the key for 2-3 seconds until you hear a beep, then you say the name of the person you want to phone. This needs to be set up first though, when you store a name and number, you also have the choice to add a nametag for future voice dialling.
Now the main bit **************
The phone is pretty easy to use, as you open the phone the screen comes to life and the easy start menu greets you. There are four options to choose from, and you choose your option by using the arrow key, pressing to the left opens the call register menu, pressing right opens the date and alarm menu, pressing down opens the phone book and pressing up takes you to the text, multimedia messaging and email section. The user can further customise these options and for example you could have the calculator instead of the phone book or games instead of the messaging section.
The main screen also features the time, date, operator logo or name, analogue clock and you can have a variety of colourful wallpapers in the background to further make this phone suit you. You can choose from many different types of wallpaper stored on the phone, or you can download them from Mobile phone sites offering wallpaper downloads.
To get to the rest of the menu you press the menu key that is located at the top in the middle of the two choice keys. The choice keys are represented on screen, normally the button on the left will be ‘Exit’ and the right button will be ‘select’ basically anyone who has used a Nokia will be at home. At the main menu, you are presented with a whole host of icons the following are the default icons Media centre, Games & Apps, Voice Notes, Shortcuts, Calculator, Settings, Messages, Web Access and More.
Media Centre ***********
The media centre leads to two more menu’s split into ‘Picture Viewer’ and ‘My Tones’ the picture viewer allows you to look through all the pictures stored on your phone. You can also set the wallpaper from here; the picture viewer will also store the pictures you download from websites, or through your data cable (not included). The tones section has all your downloaded ring tones.
Games and Apps *************
One of the great points of this phone is its support for Java Games and Applications made with the J2ME programming language. The games are brilliant and feature some really good graphics. One small gripe I have with the games is that many of them don’t feature sound, but then again I’m sure someone doesn’t want to hear you phone making noises while you’re sat on the bus. The phone come preinstalled with demo versions of games, which seems a bit of a joke to me, you have to go to the Motorola site to buy the full version’s of the games. The games can cost up to £7, it’s up to you if you decide that it is worth the money. One game I did buy was Tetris, it was on special offer at £2, the game runs very smoothly and is my favourite game to play when I’m bored in college or work. The games for this phone take up around 60kilobytes, and the phone can store over 500Kilobytes of games.
Applications can also be loaded to the phone, like advanced calculators, compasses and notepads, this means the phone can be customized the way you want it.
Voice Notes **********
This section lets you record voice notes for later listening, this feature can save a couple of minutes of audio.
Shortcuts ******** This section lets you save website shortcuts, basically when you download games or ring tones, you can save the shortcut to save call costs.
Calculator ********
erh! Don’t know what this is for
Settings ******
The settings section is a vast section, there are 15 sub menus from her, but the basic ones to use are personalise, which allows you to set your ring tone, wallpaper and screensaver. This also lets you set the colour scheme and change how the main menu is set out.
There are also the options to set security, call diverting, time and date, text size and language. For the more advanced user there is the option to check how much space is left for games, tone and files.
Messaging, WebAccess and More ***************************
The last three icons are messaging, web access and more, the messaging section lets you browse you sent and received messages, and allows you to set up email accounts. Webaccess lets you browse the Internet through the WAP browser, the WAP browser looks good on the colour screen and you can see full colour pictures on the websites you visit. From here you can also set up you WAP settings, and you can choose from dialling up the WAP Internet or using the new GPRS service that is four times faster.
More has all the left over icons that you didn’t choose for your main menu, this can be changed from the settings menu.
Final Comments *************
The phone really does satisfy all your needs, from games to polyphonic ringtones and from easy to use menu’s to voice dialling. The screen is big and bright, and battery life is pretty good depending on what you use it for, if you play games on it for 5-6 hours then you can expect to see a lot of battery drainage.
Advantages: stylish, fun, great features Disadvantages: poor camera quality
...YOU SEXY LITTLE MINX
The Motorola t720i truly is a sexy minx. It has a silver chrome finish and is in a clam shape design. The phones 'M' (Motorola logo) looks very stylish with a metal finish and it also doubles to be the speaker. There is a small stubby Ariel which is great as you haven’t got one of those ones that’s like a twig glued on to the end which stabs you in your pocket. There are two LCD screens a small one on the outside of the phone, ... ...do not have to open the phone. On the whole the phone is quite small and compact when closed, so fits nicely into your pocket. One thing i especially liked was that you can change both front and back fascias just like that of the nokias range.
Upon opening the clamshell flip you are pleasantly surprised by the mirror surrounding the screen reflecting back your beautiful face. This phone is ideal for a vein person. Also no more boring green keypad ...

...for. The Motorola T720 was the second phone I ever had. My first was an Audiovox. Not a big brand name, but very reliable. It was not a flip phone. It didn't have a color screen or internet access. My contract was up, and decided on Motorola because theirs was the top of the line at the time (October 2002). In the back of my mind, I was a little skeptical, as I had heard many negative opinions from friends about the Motorola Star Tac. I got it anyway. ... ...along the way, I can't really complain about the past 18 months. I know that this model is outdated. Therefore, this review is outdated. But perhaps the T720 is a representation of most, if not all, Motorola phones. For what it's worth...

...faults) but I discovered the Motorola T720 :) One day I was sitting at work, bored out of my mind answering call after call after call and boy was I bored, when one of the trainers came and told me we had training on a new phone, 'great' I thought, 'another one to learn all it's faults on.' But for once when I saw the phone I was astonished, Motorola have actually thought about technoligy. I wanted the phone badly and would use any excuse to "borrow" ... ...4 u and bought my Motorola :)
A week has passed since then and I am still learning new things about it. It is the first Motorola handset to feature a proper alarm clock, all the others are only reminders although in the older handsets manuals it says alarm clock.
I charged the handset :note, on a Motorola handset, upon purchasing it, you must charge it for 16 hours straight, if you fail to do this the battery will never work to it's full effect, ...

Where there has been a vast improvement is in the backup / synconisation with a PC. I have a USB cable (the same cable fits the v60, v66 and T720/720e) and a quite call to Motorola (who were very helpful) provided me with TrueSync Pro. Once installed, this automatically synconised selected contacts (and trust me, if your contact list in Outlook is as detailed as mine, you need to be able ... ...works extremely well.
The polyphonic ring tones are as good as any other phone, but it appears you cannot compose them yourself.
All-in-all, it's a pretty good phone, but I will await the v600 which has bluetooth (which would be very handy for my tablet pc)
Update 16/04/03:
Further to feedback - Yes it's a phone, and yes it makes and receives calls just fine :o). To ellaborate, the quality of the call's seems to be very good, and reception strength ...

Once the Motorola logo had disappeared, a happy sunrise behind a bold "Orange" logo took place, which looked truely stunning on the 4,000 colour capable screen.
The user interface came up, and was intuitive and easy to use, the whole OS was icon driven. And easy to guide around.
I soon had the phone set up, and ready to use. The phone has quite a few customiseable features, including colour scheme, ring tone, and warning light.

My only concern with this phone has been, that sometimes the screen suddenly inverts all the colours. Or parts of the screen stop responding and go black. Thankfully ...

The MotorolaT720i officially reaches its 7th birthday this quarter. Having been released in Q4 2002, it is now virtually completely obsolete but can still be seen in some films depicting the early 2000s. At the time of release it was a successor to the T720 phone, virtually of the same specification.
--- the BASICS ---
The T720i is a clamshell phone. It has 2 screens - 1 outer black and white screen and 1 inner colour screen. The phone supports basic mobile phone functions such as making and receiving calls, sending text messages in addition to more advanced but optional features such as MP3 player and a camera.

Advantages: Small Disadvantages: Cuts Out & Turns Off! Not Enough Memory. No Bluetooth or Infra Red
What first appealed to me was the small size of this phone and its flip colour screen. However, the colour isn't as nearly as good as the photo they show in the shops. It's pretty poor colouring :(
The major problem with this phone is that it simply cuts out. Whenever I load Wap or a game, it freezes and goes all black.
I've had this mobile a year now, and it?s braking! Not very durable. The microphone is fading. Sometimes the person at the other end of the phone call cannot hear me, and hang-up because they think there's no one there... annoying!
Also, the aerial is unreliable. It shows no signal even in places where other users of the same network are receiving full reception.
I also purchased a game from Wap to play on my mobile; however, it cannot be installed because of the lack of memory present on the phone. It ...
