When the T720 first came out it was one of the most wanted phones on the market. I have to admit, I got caught up in all of the hype about the phone. So I went out to buy myself one. It was cool. A lot of the features were pretty new to me (my previous one must have been a dinosaur). It had a full color screen. Many of the phones at the time had the big screen, as this one does, but only had the black and blue display. It was a novelty. Fortunately Verizon, my cellular provider, carried the T720 in it's list of products. The phone came with some extra features on it such as "Get it Now" (just verizon's gimmick playing on your vanity and need for games and thousands of different ring tones), and internet access. I wasn't interested in either, but I wanted a more compact phone. So I decided to buy it - at the price of $200. I figured for that price I better get what I paid for.
The Motorola T720 was the second phone I ever had. My first was an Audiovox. Not a big brand name, but very reliable. It was not a flip phone. It didn't have a color screen or internet access. My contract was up, and decided on Motorola because theirs was the top of the line at the time (October 2002). In the back of my mind, I was a little skeptical, as I had heard many negative opinions from friends about the Motorola Star Tac. I got it anyway. Purchasing the phone obligated me to another two year contract with Verizon. This is what I think of it after a year and a half of use.
I was impressed at first with the features that came programmed in the phone (keep in mind what I had as a basis for comparison). It came with several different ring styles ranging from traditional rings, to music, to arcade game sound effects. There was an icon for Verizon's "get it Now". Good if you don't mind spending about 6 bucks a month to download some new ring styles, or play solitaire. Other neat features included, voice recorder and a datebook that allowed you to set alerts for upcoming events, in case you forgot.
The functionability of the T720 was very good at first: the display was sharp, ringer and vibrate settings all worked very well and in-call connections were sustained through the duration of all conversations without much distortion. After about 5 months, or so, I ran into a few problems, though minor ones. - Sometimes, I would plug it in at night to charge and the front display would notify that is was charging. To my dismay, I would unplug it in the morning and find that the battery was dead. - There were a handful of days when it would charge just fine, but I couldn't access anything on the phone; in fact the display would stay black despite any button I pushed. The only way to fix it was to disconnect the battery then put it back in. Not a big deal, but an inconvenience. - On a few occasions I would get disconnected mid-call. I spent $200 on this phone, so I made sure that I never dropped it or gave it any reason to malfunction. Therefore, I was a little disappointed. Thankfully, these were not a foretelling of what was to come. I have not experienced any problems in the past 6 months or so.
Overall I'd say that for it's time it was a decent phone. It was expensive. But then again, it was one of the first of its kind. There are similar models available, by different makers, that are much cheaper. I cannot testify to the reliability of these; however, for the T720, aside from the few problems I encountered along the way, I can't really complain about the past 18 months. I know that this model is outdated. Therefore, this review is outdated. But perhaps the T720 is a representation of most, if not all, Motorola phones. For what it's worth...
