Before I start this review, I should say that the U9 is my first new phone in over three years. This is something pretty major for me as I was very attached to my old phone - it might have been old and basic but it offered everything I needed, and I found that most newer phones were either ugly or had the exact same (or worse) specifications than my old phone did - which was pretty surprising for one that was so old! The fact that I *FINALLY* chose to upgrade is a pretty good sign as to just how good the U9 is.
The U9 is almost certainly a girls phone. Your colour choices are either pink or purple - the pink designed for 'party girls', and the purple for those that like luxury. The outer appearance of the phone is fantastic. It really is a gorgeous little phone, and extremely fashionable. The outside is very simplistic, metallic and shiny so it manages to look both sophisticated and cool. The purple is a gorgeous colour and is owned by my best friend, it's quite bright and is one of those colours that you'll keep wanting to look at because it's just SO nice. I own the pink version, which isn't as bright as the purple but just as nice. The pink is much less distracting and is more maroon in some lights, I find it blends with things much better than the purple as the colour doesn't stand out to quite an amount. Also on the outside of the phone is a small screen, although you won't usually be aware that it's there. By the way, if you have been considerig this
phone, I would recommend you actually go to a store and look at it - for some reason pictures of the phone don't really capture how nice it's colouring is, it's much prettier to look at in real life. When you actually hit the button to turn the screen on it displays the time, followed by a short screen saver of your choice. Both the time and the screensaver fit in really well with the phone - they blend in perfectly, and the screensavers are really pretty to watch. You've got quite a selection to choose between, but all but one are more 'mystical' and suit it really well. And the other one is just plain funny :) Another mention about the outside screen is that you can also read your text messages through it. If you receive a new message while your phone is closed, you can hit the button on the side and read your message without actually opening the phone - and then when you actually DO open it, it's there waiting for you without you having to do anything. This is a really useful feature if you're like me and like to read messages when you're in lectures :) If you are playing music, this is also shown on the front and becomes touch sensitive so you can change songs, etc.
So, how about the inside of the phone? Just as nice! The inside of the phone is really stylish and again, nice and shiny! The only thing I'd say that's wrong with the inside is that the buttons you use to navigate are quite small, and with my nails they can be quite hard to push without putting your fingers into a weird position. The buttons are also flat, which means if you are a compulsive texter like I am it can take you a while to use. The menus are very nice to look at - they're very stylish, can be customised to be whatever colour or design you like, and the colouring is really smooth. It's very easy to navigate, you'll be able to figure things out and change the ordering etc yourself within a few minutes! I really like the variety of backgrounds the phone comes with, they are all really pretty and fit the phone well. And of course, you can set your own photos etc to be the background if you'd prefer! The ringtones that come with the phone are pretty average really. There are a few that I like, but the variety isn't great. I didn't really like any of the message alert tones that came with it, but it's easy enough to download ones you like more.
Everything about the phone is designed to be both stylish, but also easy to use, which seems to be a rare thing with phones! It's really easy to navigate your address book, and it contains all sorts of random features. As well as the obvious phone number section, you can add an address, a birthday, a zodiac sign, and assign a picture or a certain ring tone to different people. The extra features are really great and it's really easy to find who you need and add new details or contacts.
The camera on this phone is a really good quality. It's a good size and really clear, I'd say it's above average for camera phones - although bear in mind, this isn't one of those specifically for photographers! But it more than does the job. The camera is very easy to use. Zooming, changing the colouring etc is all really obviously worked out and won't take you any time to figure out at all. If you close the phone whilst using the camera, the image then appears on the miniature screen on the outside instead, so if you want to take a photo of yourself this is a good option as you can see exactly what you're doing and how the picture is going to come out. This isn't perfect as it can be quite hard to see the image when it's on the outside, but it does it's job. Once you've saved a picture it's very easy to find again, it's very well laid out and won't take you long to find at all. The video recorder is excellent as well. The screen is a bit small for it which is disappointing, but the quality itself is really high and clear, no constant jumps and fuzziness like you'll get with other phones!
The text message inbox is very clean and pretty and easy to navigate - and as mentioned before, you can even read your new messages without actually opening the phone! I find writing messages a bit tricky, but that could be just because I'm SO used to exactly where the buttons were and how they worked with my old phone. I've found the button position can take quite a while to write messages out and the way the predictive text is can be a bit odd to work with at first, but once you get used to it it works well.
The internet system is fast, smooth, and easy to use. There's not really much here that's different from any other phone, it's easy to navigate and does it's job. You can also use it to download new wallpapers, games etc for your phone. The phone comes with Sudoku which can be a bit fiddly to use but is otherwise fun if sudoku is something you enjoy.
Overall, I would definitley recommend this phone - especially for girls. It's a very fashionable phone to have - both colours are gorgeous, and I know my friends are constantly taking mine when I'm not looking and fiddling with it. It offers good featurs, is simple to use, and is very stylish.
