It wasn’t my fault…I just had a little accident, honest!
Fact of the matter is that I have cracked the face on my lovely little Seimens S35i, and the poor wee mite has had to go to the phone hospital to be made better.
Now the last time I had to make an insurance claim on my phone, I waited so long that Vodafone, in their embarrassment, waived the excess and gave me a free upgrade. Hence the Seimens S35i. That time they gave me a loan phone so appalling that I gave it back and did without for a few weeks (Hey, I remember the days when we ALL did without. It can be done!)
This time, the extremely helpful and friendly (really) Corinne at Vodafone’s Putney store took pity on me and pulled a MotorolaV2288 out of the loaner cupboard. Well, the least I can do to repay the kindness is to give it the once-over and review it for my fellow Ciaoistas, so here we go.
First impressions are of a smooth, rounded sort of phone, but quite big, at least compared to the one I’m used to. A quick comparison, made with the help of my own phone’s manual, comes out like this:
Weight – 140g against the Seimens 99g Length – 155mm against 118mm Width - 50mm against 46mm Depth - 30mm against 21mm
That’s enough comparing. It’s pretty big, OK? Let’s get down to doing stuff.
The V2288 is a dual band WAP enabled phone incorporating an FM radio for use with a stereo headset. This headset comes with a microphone attached. Not, as you may foolishly assume, for the purposes of Karaoke and annoying fellow travellers on the train, but so that one accessory acts as your hands-free kit and your in-head music and ads thingy. It can be personalised with ‘wraps’ (which confusingly aren’t the same as those tortilla sandwiches available at M & Sfood halls and other good stores. I made a real mess with the guacamole, and it kept falling off.) A variety of ringtones are also available for the winding up of your fellow passengers, but nothing like the range available on many other makes and models, even without the download facility. You’re limited to about ten, and these are pretty bog standard rings. It’s doubtful you’ll get anyone threatening physical violence even if you try them all out one after the other at max volume. No fun at all really.
The keypad is pretty straightforward too, with a power button located below the alpha-numeric pad and the menu button, quick message button, up and down selectors and OK and clear buttons all located above. There’s also a ‘Quick Access’ button marked with an arrow which, in tandem with other keys allows the user to add a number to the phonebook, adjust the ringer volume, get at messages, switch off the ringer etc. Pressing the arrow brings up a selection of graphic icons which make little visual sense. Thankfully, there’s also a caption stating which option you are currently squinting at in the hope that it will all become clear soon, so all is not lost.
SMS is frill-free, with no predictive text system (some people love it, OK? Don’t be so narrow-minded). Internet access is…well…it’s WAP…spelled C.R.A.P. as we all know, so no surprises there.
There is one obvious potential problem with this phone. The aerial extends beyond the body by some 25mm, and looks a sure victim of any rough handling. It unscrews, so replacement wouldn’t be hard, but who needs the hassle?
All in all, this is a workmanlike phone, which I wouldn’t choose to buy, but which isn’t a bad temporary replacement. Also a good weight for banging in nails, so the Christmas Stocking will be well secured to the mantelpiece this year!
