I was coming to the end of my contract and wanted a new phone. I had made mistakes in the past by not going for the best deal, hurrying my decision etc. which made me more determined to properly research the mobile offers available to me. I spent weeks trawling mobile shops, the internet, newspapers and anything that even mentioned mobile phones until I found the deal that I was looking for. Now came the phone. Did I want a camera? Mp3 ringtones? What exactly did I want from the mobile phone?
I saw an ad in the paper by accident one day that fitted my requirements, and had a free mobile phone. The phone was a
Motorola V300. Although I got mine for free, I know that this can also be purchased as pay-as-you-go for about £150. The flip phone was not one I had ever had before; all of my previous phones had been standard Nokias. I decided on a change. A flip phone was, for me, ideal because I accidentally call people all the time due to either not locking my phone properly or pressing buttons whilst it is in my bag. Not anymore, I thought, with this new phone things would change. The phone also had a camera, which was a nice thing, because I don’t have one already and it seems like a good idea!!
Anyway, I ordered the phone and it arrived. I was extremely pleased with what I received. The Motorola V300 clamshell phone is small and compact, with a gorgeous blue ‘soft-touch’ cover which cannot be changed (unless you have specialist help, I found out from looking at eBay) and I was pleased with my first impressions. I started up the phone, and at first, it was little difficult to navigate the menus and buttons, since I was so used to having a Nokia (I have read other reviews and they said the same thing). However, with the manual provided and the cd-rom manual I managed to get going.
This phone has loads of features. I will try and tell you as many as I know and have used.
The phone is light, weighs 95g and is 89 by 49 by 25mm. Small and compact, lightweight and easy to carry. With the standard battery, the phone lasts a fair amount of time, roughly about 3 days, maybe longer if you don’t keep taking pics (like I do!!).
The built-in camera takes good quality shots, they can be stored on the phone or sent to the T-mobile site for storage there (but you have to set that up first). The photos have three settings, MMS, for low-quality picture messages that you send to your friends. The medium and good settings are for larger sized pictures, better quality for email and downloading to computers through the use of a data cable (which has to be purchased separately). Even the ‘click’ of the camera has a sound, which can be changed. I have ‘quack’ which sounds like a duck every time I take photo! There is also a ‘boing’ and a ‘chimp’ and you can also have no sound, for those discreet shots.
It has a glorious colour screen which can have different backgrounds and personalized for that unique look. You can have pictures you’ve taken as backgrounds too. This phone can use GPRS, WAP and has two games, Monopoly and Stuntman which can be added to with more downloading. Monopoly is great, fun for those long journeys and for just passing the time!
It has a fairly large memory (5MB) in which you can store loads of photos at the low resolution, and loads of messages and phone numbers (1000 apparently, but I don’t know that many people). Email is a facility that this phone also has and instant messaging too. It has caller ID and photos you take can be stored next to the number of that person so you can see who you’re calling (kind of).
Downloadable themes, mp3 ringtones and alerts, java games, external screen, voice recorder….this phone has loads of useful features including the usual calculator, sms, predictive text, different profiles and so on.
All in all, this phone is great. I have found it to be useful and stylish, too. However, it may pose problems for those not used to non-Nokia phones. The menu is a little hard to understand (it takes time) and the predictive text is a little difficult to work. But I do think that it is a good little phone, packed with features and useful tools. However, I feel that the phone may be damaged easily (I looked at another review) and so mine always wears its leather case that came with it. I advise anyone considering getting a new phone to think about getting this one!

I've just got one of these and I have been impressed so far, although I thought the manual was rubbish! I still don't know how to do half of the things I want to do.

Sounds good - thinking of getting one myself - no good for my contractor hubbie if its not robust though!

I don't like flip phones either... too bulky (says me with my brick of a mobile!). Nice review
