All these phones looked identical and were very similar in features, except the V50 that had WAP. when I put my SIM card in I didnt have to remove the battery as the front black bezel concealed the SIM card. The silver cover on the phone feels nice and looks super sexy, but it feels very fragile to me. Fragile it isn't, it is quite strong as I found out when I dropped it, my mate doesn't know though. The buttons are quite fiddly to use but feel nice and soft, and the new menu system is a lot easier to use and user friendly. The V66 came with a PC suite. So I borrowed the Software and installed it. Then I realised the damned thing had no infra red port. You have to buy a data cable for around £20
FEATURES:
The memory of the phone holds 500 names and numbers. Dialled, recieved and missed calls are saved automaticly to memory. Voice recognition lets you save 25 names out of the phonebook, and you can save 9 quick access voice tags. Also a voice memo facility to record voice notes. Calculator and Currency converter as well as Clock and Alarm facility. The Diary feature is handy as well. There are 3 games, Mindblaster, Paddleball and Blackjack. These games are OK but you can't beat the Nokia classics. The backlights have 3 different colours, Red, Orange and Green. The display only changes colour and the backlights remain green. There are 32 ring tones and another 32 free spaces for others to be downloaded or composed using the phones composer. The Vibrate alert is very smooth and discreet, and can be set to work on its own or with the ringer. An FM Radio is another built in feature that comes with headphones and seems to work very well. SMS messages are easy to compose using the iTap feature for fast typing of your messages, this is similar to the predictive text input used by the Nokia phones. The phones Microbrowser lets you access information such as Sport, Weather, News etc.
The Phone is Tri Band and can be used in the USA and other countries where Dual Band phones will not work. The frequencies of the V66 are GSM900, GSM1800 and GSM1900.
The major feature is GPRS (General Packet Radio Service). GPRS is still in its early stages really and the cost is still quite high if you want to sucscribe to the service. It features and always on mobile internet service where you only pay for the amount of data you receive. Usually you will pay a monthly fee for a certain amount of mega-bites of information you get.
EASE OF USE:
Very easy to use once you get the basic drift of the menu system and how to use the smart navigational key. It will fit in your top pocket without you even noticing it there, until you here it ring or feel it vibrate. You don't even have to press a button to answer the phone, just open the active flip to answer or terminate calls.
SPECIFICATIONS AND PERFORMANCE: The Phone has a slim Lithium 500amh battery that gives 4 hours of talk time and up to 120 hours on standby. It weighs in at 79 grams and measures 84 mm in lenth, 44 mm in width and 20 mm in height. Also a 96 x 64 high resolution Holographic display. An optional usb link (to connect to PC). It also supports services such as Call Divert, Caller Display etc. Reception is good both indoor and outdoor and this is helped by the external aerial. EFR technology makes the speech quality easy to hear and audible.
ACCESSORIES:
The front bezel can be exchanged for new funky covers that are on sale now, even ones with flashing lights are available. Leather cases, desktop charger and hands free kits are widely available as well as other obvious accessories.
PRICE:
Between £200 and £350 for a SIM free model. If you buy on Contract you can even find them offered for free.
NETWORKS AVAILABLE:
All the major networks have The V66. Orange was the last to make the phone available to customers with the release of the phone in December 2001. Orange stopped selling the phone for a brief period as reports of faults came in. Now this has been ironed out and the phone is being sold again.
IN BRIEF:
This is a sexy little number and you will look good holding this baby. Customise this phone to your lifestyle using ring tones, covers etc. I would go for this phone if you like Motorola, and want a small compact phone packed with features.
Advantages: Call clarity, GPRS, Data Cable and Software included Disadvantages: Infra-red port missing, menus not as good as older models..
...used Nokia, Samsung, Panasonic, and Motorola Mobile Phones I always find Motorola to be the best, the V66 is no exception…
I, recently, convinced the better half to renew her contract with Orange and get a new phone, the Motorola V66, which I then managed to obtain from her since she likes her trusty old Nokia 8210…So I managed to get the phone which by the way cost her nothing as she opted to keep her monthly spend at £25 per month on the precept ... ...the op is about the Motorola V66 so here goes nothing :
It’s Network Frequencies are : Enhanced GSM Triband 900MHz, 1800MHz and 1900MHz which means you can use the phone all over the world, okay then in the 108 or so countries your network provider has an agreement with, America and Canada is where you get the most use from Triband though…Gambia does not have it and although my network provider lists Senegal as a partner the network would not recognise ...

Advantages: Stylish, packed with features Disadvantages: no second screen
Motorola's v66 is certainly a very stylish phone. If looks are what you are looking for then this is certainly a leading contender. Its very lightweight and fits easily into any pocket. Visual-wise it lacks the changeability of nokia's phones, but the manufacturor has provided a number of different covers in place of the black triangle.
Access to the sim card is behind this triangle - a very different feature from most phones. This has its advantages ... ...and lets you change it regularly if needs be. However, this ability can cause the phone to be erratic in recognising the sim and this can be annoying at times.
Features are good, with a number of games very different to that of nokia's examples. Paddleball is an interesting game, although it becomes impossible very quickly as the keys are not responsive enough.
The phone has an interesting way of using vibrate in that it will not vibrate and ring ...

This tiny handset is beautifully constructed - the build quality is flawless, it feels solid in the hand, and there's a good positive action on the flip. The buttons have a nice clicky action. It's a lovely piece of hardware.
Included in the box is a USB data cable, complete with modem drivers and sync software. This means you can use the phone as a GPRS modem straight out of the box. The TrueSync software by StarFish allows you to sync the phonebook ... ...it's own simple editor. It's a welcome addition which will save you a lot of messing around with the tiny keypad. Be aware that it's your only connection method. There's no infrared or Bluetooth here.
Battery life is decent enough under normal usage, and call quality is excellent as well as it's ability to hold onto calls in low reception areas. It's a tri-band handset which means it will work anywhere there's a GSM network. The coolest feature ...

Advantages: GPRS, menus Disadvantages: Battery, no IrDA or bluetooth
...(6) New style Motorola shortcuts are nice
Poor things:
(1) No infrared or bluetooth
(2) No POP email access
(3) Battery life
(4) Games get boring very quickly
(5) Diary viewer and reminders are poor
There's probably more, but the whole point is that the phone doesn't inspire you. You don't pick it up and think "cool!", you just pick it up when you want to make a call.
I dunno, maybe I'm just getting old, but where are all the good gadgets ...

Advantages: Small, stylish, interchangeable front covers.WAP.Tri-band(can be used in Europe, Asia, Africa, nearly all of North America and Australia) Disadvantages: Very expensive to purchase(£330 off contract with Virgin) also you can buy the "v" motorola original cover 3 for £15 which is a lot for a little piece of plastic!
I had the Motorola v66 for christmas, I was really excited because this is my ideal phone.Small enough to fit into a pocket or handbag, very stylish but also I think, a status symbol.
The phone can be purchased in two colours
*Silver housing with a black interchangeable front cover.
*Radar blue housing (like a metalic navy) with a lighter navy interchangeable front cover.
These are some the features it has-:
*CLI-(call line identification)shows ... ...also owned the ever famous Motorola startac and this knocks it's socks off.
This phone is particulary good for the person who likes to travel, or has to.Personally I would say it is more of a woman's phone as women have dainty hands and fingers and the keys are pretty small.
There are some accessories, such as the hands-free and in-car charger, this model is also compatible with the desk charger which is handy. You can purchase batteries and carry ...

Advantages: Small, Good Looking, Can personalise Disadvantages: Flip a bit flimsy, doubling up of phonebook, loss of phonebook
to transfer from the phone to the sim only.
My worse complaint would be that there seems to be a software problem with the phone - not all v66's but some of them - in the fact that occasionally you lose your phonebook - mine has happened when the battery ran out - I put it on charge - switched on - only to find that all my phonebook had disappeared - it does come back - but normally only after taking the battery off and replacing (which is an art in itself).
Oh and the manual looks like the bible in the fact that you are ploughing through about 180 pages - the index is great but the one thing I was looking for was not there - just my luck - I still dont know the answer - as to whether there is an standard alarm facility - if anyone knows let me know please. If there isnt this is one standard area where motorola have messed up ...

Advantages: Light, Triband, Java Applications, Built in FM Radio Disadvantages: Ringtones are hard to make, unable to send pictures, WAP is tricky
I have used this phone for about 6 months. This flip-Phone is extremely light and portable. I have been to canada and australia with it and it works like a charm. Tri-band is guarenteed to work.
I am currently on a contract with O2 which costs me £20 monthly which includes 100 free minutes and 100 text messages. The handset SIM-Free cost me £35.
The 100 free minutes can be used Mobile to mobile accross networks at any time of the day, also calls can be made anywhere within the UK. Although other tarrifs are possible
With this built in FM Radio it has good reception and easy to program in use. Unfortunately you do have to purchase an original MotorolaV66i headset which could set you back (around £35)
The Java Applets arent the easiest functions to use, neither is using WAP. If your interested in games there alot of games ...
