hi, i'm a mum of two young children looking for ways to still enjoy life while stuck at home a lot! Chocolate is top of the list so far..... although walking 4 miles a day to and from the local pre-school is growing on me!

When I fell pregnant in 2003 we decided we better get a bigger car. We eventually decided on a Mondeo or Vectra and were looking at second hand with around 12,000 on the clock.
We found a few we liked in local dealerships but had a lot of trouble getting a good price for a part exchange on our current car.
My husband starting surfing the internet and found Motorpoint. A car we liked in the colour we wanted was in stock at the time and we were amazed as the price was less than we had been looking at for a second hand car. In fact I believe it was almost £5000 less than list price for a brand new car!
We thought it was too good to be true and assumed that the good price would mean they would offer us next to nothing for our current car. Wrong! They offered 1000 more than Vauxhall!
They broke down the costs for us and the final price includes a year's road tax, registration and number plates. The final price was about £200 more than the price on the internet (nothing compared to the saving we made!). They even give you a tax disc holder!
All staff we dealt with were very informative, they gave us all the information we needed without us having to prompt them (another plus over the local dealerships) for example interior colour of the car, what's included with the model (GHIA), how we would have to pay, what documents we needed to take with us, the remaining warranty etc
So when our car was ready for collection we arranged a pick up time.
I must admit when I got the bankers cheque from my bank I was somewhat nervous about buying a car we had found on the internet but when we arrived at motorpoint all of our fears subsided. It is a really professionally run business.
When it came to handing over the keys to our old car i whispered to my husband would they knock off some money they were giving us for our car as it did have a few minor scratches and chips here and there. But no they didn't! The salesman said "our boys in the garage can fix those no bother! it doesn't affect the price" again different from the eagle eyes of local dealers who knock off £100 for every time you breathed near the car!
Ok so our new mondeo looked perfect! The warranty was only 18 months as it had travelled from Germany or somewhere all around europe on the back of a lorry before it made it to the UK so it was in fact 18 months old, although officialy it is brand new.
It had three miles on the clock !! But the only slight problem is that we were classed as the second owners. The garage are down as the first registered owner of the car. But it had three miles on the clock so that's good enough for me!
We had no teething problems with the car I absolutely loved it, couldn't fault it at all!
No its 2006, three years later we have just purchased another new car from motorpoint. This time we had no worries and in fact we were more confident to use Motorpoint than a main dealer. They again offered us a lot more for the old car, save us more than £5000 on brand new car and in fact was £2000 cheaper than second hand ones we had seen.
I have put none for disadvantages but that is only from my point of view. I suppose really there are a few things that I should make people aware of:
You are the second name on the log book.
The cars are imported so this affects second hand value
The warranty might be less, but they do tell you up front.
I will never bother going to a local dealer again!

There is one snag with being technically the 2nd owner - most insurers will give you a new or equivalent car if you write off a new car within the first year, but they'll use this to wriggle out if it. OK, you'll still get a write-off value but it won't be enough to buy a new one again. Nonetheless, as you say, as long as you're aware of this and aren't in the habit of writing off new cars, then the savings should be the main issue. It's the same if you buy one of those 'old letter' pre-registered delivery-mileage new cars that dealers are so keen to get rid of just before 1st April. Chris

Sounds like you made some great savings there - I'll be checking them out when it's time for a new car! Good review
