Ah, Motorstorm. The first game that was ever shown for the PS3, and it astounded people! But then news came that the footage people had seen was not real game footage, and it was just pre-rendered. Then a few months later, new footage came out of it, in game footage, and the differences were obvious. It was definitely not as good as the previous footage! Then a couple of months before been released, brand new footage was released. And once again, it looked amazing, and this time, it was in-game footage! Welcome to the rollercoaster that is Motorstorm!!!
Gameplay The gameplay on Motorstorm is very solid! Everything feels just like it should do! And all the different cars are brilliantly varied in how each one feels!
There are six different types of vehicles you can choose to drive. You can race Bikes, Buggies, Big Rigs, Mud Pluggers, Rally Cars and ATV's. Each one has advantages and disadvantages, and you should choose which vehicle to use depending on which type of track you are racing on.
Bikes- Bikes are the fastest vehicles in the game, but you can be easily knocked off your bike if rammed by other racers or if you hit an obstacle.
Buggies- Buggies are also very fast, but they explode very easily!!
Big Rigs- The biggest and slowest vehicles in the game. They won't win a race on speed, but can knock the other competitors off the track!
Mud Pluggers-
They are like buggies, but they are great on tracks with deep mud, because their tyres allow you to slice through the mud!
Rally Cars- Rally cars can be very fast, but can be flipped quite easily!
ATV's- Just like a bike, but they have four wheels. Lets just call them quad bikes!!
Another great feature of the gameplay is how 2 laps are never the same on the game! When racing, your tyres will leave tracks in the mud, and with the longer races, the track will be carved up, and driving becomes much harder, as your tyres will begin to skid around on all the previous tyre tracks! It really makes racing harder, but so much more realistic! The game really uses it's complex physics engine to great effect, which makes the gameplay fantastic!!
Graphics Probably the strongest part of the game! Everything looks amazing, from the dust on the tracks, to the shimmering sunset in some races, nearly everything has been created to look like perfection! One piece of detail you should look out for are the tyre tracks that you leave in the mud! If you do this, sometimes you see wetness glistening in the sun, and this really looks beautiful. Yes, I know it is mud, but you really haven't seen mud like this before!!!
Another part of the game that looks amazing is probably the part you should avoid the most! Crashing! When you crash, you can see every little detail, from springs and bolts flying about to bodywork denting and crushing, everything looks fantastic, and sometimes you will deliberately crash, just to see how much detail you can spot!!
It really lets you know the kind of things that the PS3 can achieve with all it's power, and this is one of the first games available, think what it is going to be like in a couple of years time!! Exciting eh?
Sound Sound is also very good on Motorstorm! Nearly all of the vehicles sound different, each one with their own engine sound, but there is also other sound apart from the engines. When racing, and going through menus, you are treated to listening to songs from artists such as Primal Scream, Queens of The Stone Age, Kings Of Leon, and many, many others!! The style of music suits the game very well, and makes racing that extra bit exciting!!
Online Now this is on PS3, I can add an extra bit of information into my reviews. I didn't have online for my PS2, but I do with my PS3!
The online with Motorstorm is very enjoyable and easy, (well racing isn't so easy, because there really are some pros out there, but setting it up is easy)! You select Online from the main menu, you select which region you are from, and select if you agree to the terms and conditions.
After this you are taken to the lobby. Here, you decide whether you want to create or join a game, select game settings, and if any of your buddies are online and racing. After joining a race, you wait till everybody is ready, then the host starts everything off, you have about 30 seconds to choose your vehicle, and then the race begins!!! Motorstorm will keep a record of everything you do, how many wins you achieve, and how many races you don't win, including other stats such as how many times you have crashed, and which vehicles you use the most and least! Online Motorstorm is a great laugh, especially when you and others are using headsets, and you knock them off the track, listening to their reactions can be some of the funniest moments you will hear!
Lifespan I think that the main game will take you a very long time to complete. You have to achieve high positions in many races, and this gets much harder further on through the main story mode, as the further you progress, the clever the opposition become, and they will really begin to do anything to stop you from winning!! But if you keep on playing, you will eventually succeed, just as long as you keep practicing, and learn how to handle your opposition!
Best part of the game I think that the greatest part of the game are the amazing graphics! You really never have seen mud or crashes as beautiful as this!! You will be astounded by the graphics, even if you don't have a HDTV, the graphics are noticeably better than the old PS2.
Any bad points? There really aren't any bad things about the game. Maybe one small bad point is that the opposition get fiendishly difficult further on in the game, but if you keep practicing, you should eventually overcome them!
Overall I think that Motorstorm is a fantastic game, especially since this is one of the first PS3 games. It has a great fun single player game, and if you manage to complete this, or even if you don't, there is the great Online Multiplayer mode to explore. This game should last you for ages, and it probably will remain one of PS3's great games for some time to come!!!
