You can use the service from the 15th day of the month in which your current licence expires and can pay by credit or debit card although they do make a charge of £2.50 if you want to use your credit card!
The big advantage from my point of view is that I don't have to make my way to the Post Office and queue up with everyone else waiting to renew their taxdisc at the end of February. To be honest it is probably the only time I go into a Post Office and it just isn't convenient as I live in a rural are and we lost our Post Office years ago.

You enter the reference number in and hayho your details come up.
You confirm your car details are correct then it proceeds to check if you have a valid MOT and insurance which only takes literally a few seconds.
Then the worst part comes....Payment. This can be made by credit or debit card. If paying by credit card they do charge you an additional £2.50 but this is like most companies.
Onto confirm and your given a reference number and told your disc will be with you in 5 working days. Mine actally took only 3 days to come which was great.
This is a method in which I will continue using as it is very quick and easy to do ...
