Well you've made it here, so you've sussed out how to use an internet browser. Chances are, you're using either Internet Explorer, Opera, Safari or, the same as me, Firefox. There are other internet browsers available, but those are perhaps the most commonly used. With Microsoft having such a strong hold in the PC market, many people, myself included, have spent years automatically clicking on the Internet Explorer icon to log onto the internet. It enables you to check your online banking, send an email through Yahoo, Google some trivia and access IMDB.com to settle disputes with friends. So why switch to Firefox?
There's an old saying, 'If it ain't broke, don't fix it.' And if you've only ever used Internet Explorer (IE), you might not feel the need to get a new internet browser. But once you start using Firefox and overcome the initial awkwardness of using a new browser, you'll see that although IE doesn't need fixing, Firefox takes surfing the 'net to a whole new level.
Version 1 of Firefox was originally released in 2004 as part of an experimental branch of the Mozilla project. Most recently, version 3 (V3) of Firefox was released in June of this year when there was a record 8 million unique downloads on the day of release. This makes it the second most popular internet browser after IE.
Firefox is freeware which means you can download it free and legally. It's compatible with Windows, Mac OS X and Linux. Downloading it and installing Firefox is fast and easy so you'll be ready to browse using Firefox within minutes. If my memory serves me correct, one feature of Firefox means that when you first install it and open the browser, you are offered to chance to transfer your bookmarks and other information from IE, saving you the time and effort of having to do this manually.
Once you start to use Firefox, you'll realize that it's full of interesting little features. Firefox supports tabbed browsing which is great if you're fickle like me. I regularly have 6 and more web pages open at once, all within the same window but under different tabs. When you right click a link, you have the option of opening in a new window, or opening in a new tab. The difference between the two may seem irrelevant, but once you start using the tabs, you won't look back! It makes your taskbar far less cluttered and makes it quick and easy to flick between websites, a great feature if you're researching from a variety of sources.
Another fantastic feature of Firefox is the in-built pop-up blocker. When I was using IE, I always found that, despite using numerous pop-up blockers, there were some pesky ads that always seemed to slip through. I recall being the 'millionth visitor and grand prize winner' on virtually every website I visited. Since using Firefox, these pop-ups are a thing of the past! There will be times though, when you want to view a pop-up for one reason or another. When a pop-up is blocked, Firefox gives you the option to either allow this particular pop-up or allow all pop-ups from the website you're visiting. This is in a discreet box at the top of your screen so it's a feature that you can easily access if needed, but not off-putting it you are trying to ignore those pesky ads.
Firefox also claims to be the fastest browser available. When I originally started using Firefox a few years ago, it did tend to be slower than IE, but over the years it has increased in speed and I can't fault its speed when I'm online. OK, so it occassionally crashes, but no more often than IE and there are regular updates to overcome any recurring niggles.
Finally, despite Firefox having a multitude of great features I could share with you, I'll just take the chance to mention the add-ons and plug-ins. There are so many available, you can get Firefox to do almost anything you could want from a browser, short of making you a brew! I particularly like the form filler which means I can enter competitions and apply for freebie with the click of a button and all my personal details are entered into the relevant fields. I also have the spellcheck activated which enables me to type directly into the browser without having to cut and paste out of Word to correct my dubious spelling. You can also save all your bookmarks remotely and access them from any PC, perfect for when you're at a friend's house and can't remember the name of that fantastic website you found the other day. In fact, there are so many widgets available to download to improve the Firefox experience, I feel the urge to go and find more!
So if this all sounds interesting but you're a bit of a technophobe, don't worry! Firefox is very simple to use and you'll quickly get the hang of it and, since it's free, you've got nothing to lose!
Advantages: More secure, adons and themes available Disadvantages: Slow to load
I've been using Firefox since the early days after having nothing but porblems browsing with Internet Explorer. I kept finding my computer infected with viruses and spyware so I began to wonder why. I then realised that Internet Explore wasn't in fact very secure so I wondered if there was a more secure method of browsing the web. I was only vaguely aware of other web browsers existing so I done a Google search on web browsers and Firefox caught ... ...Firefox had a lot of features that appealed to me. As well as more security, there was also the option of themes and extensions to make the browsing experience more fun and efficient. One thing I have noticed is that Firefox is a slow to load up browser and in its early stages was a bit of a resource hog. But now a days it seems faster and more stable. To make my browsing experience better I usually have my Friefox set up in the following way: -Add ...

Advantages: Fast loading times, Quickly install plugins, Works on all OS Disadvantages: Does not come default linux, not all web pages supported.
Firefox 3 is by no doubt the best web browser out there for windows and linux. Fast loading times make it easy to play in browser flash games, watch videos or stream music online. Firefox also has brilliant extensions such as IETab which lets you view pages in Internet Explorer in a new tab within firefox! My favourite thing in FireFox is the way it can easily install plugins & applications such as Flash player, Java & Windows Media Player. This ...
