This week is national faggot week. I didnt know there was such a thing but there is so I thought heres the excuse to buy some and review them. I have only ever seen Mr Brains faggots on sale in our local Somerfield but I am sure there are other brands available elsewhere.

When I was a little girl our local butchers made them and they had a stronger flavour. You took a bowl or dish and bought them hot. Fast food before its time. These days, they are mostly frozen and are in a tinfoil dish with a cardboard lid and then in a box. Abit over packaged I think really. You can get them in 2, 4, 6 and 8 faggots. I bought 4 faggots for £1.25.

Faggots are little balls of pork liver, rusk and onion. They are sort of minced up ingredients and stuck together in a ball. There are herbs, tomato puree and other bits and bobs. They are served in a westcountry sauce. Its thick gravy to you and me and its very tasty. It sticks to your ribs and proberly other places you dont want it to. I dont like liver of any kind but yet I love faggots. Dont ask me how come because to me they taste nothing like liver. They taste like slightly spicey meaty balls, that do repeat on you about 2 hours later. I had them with oven chips and garden peas but they are also nice with mash.

The bad bits apart from the burping is that they are quite high in fat. Hence the real reason I havent had them in years. My box was 378 grm but per 100g they have 6.6 grms fat and 128 calories. Not too bad if you have them with oven chips.

You can microwave them, or oven cook them. I personally think its easier to oven cook them as they can go in with the chips mark 8 or 230c for 30-40 minutes. Please note, oven chips need to be put in later as they dont take as long. Take the faggots out of the outter box. Pop them on a baking tray and loosen the lid. If you microwave them they take 12 minutes but you have to put them in another bowl. You also have to stir them halfway through cooking.

You can spot Mr Brains faggots in the freezers at most supermarkets. They are in a bright yellow box with a picture of 2 faggots, peas and mash on a plate. Across the box it says Mr Brains in red and pork faggots in green.

I really think Mr Brains is an off putting name but also faggots is not a nice name for a food. Alot of people up North call them Savoury ducks.

Dont be put off by what they are made from, I highly recomend them.....JM
