"But you wouldn't ever give up trying?" Me: "Nah. Some things you can't give up on, can you?" Mike Gayle became the popular prince of romantic comedy overnight with his first bestselling novel My Legendary Girlfriend. With Mr Commitment he's back with a tale of the modern male that delivers its punchlines directly to the heart. The world of aspiring stand-up comic Benjamin Dominic Duffy is shaken to its uncertain foundations when his adored girlfriend Mel revokes her previously held opinion of marriage as "an outmoded concept created by a patriarchal society to keep women in their place" and, on bent knee, proposes to him. Mel, "a living, breathing, moving version of Chrissie Hynde singing "Brass in Pocket"," is the girl of his dreams--but Duffy's dilemma is that marriage is still his worst nightmare. Dan, his best friend, flatmate and fellow bath-dodger counsels him to retain The Ways of the Bachelor, while Mel's best friend Julie--known as Nosferatu due to her bloodless dislike of all things Duffy--urges her to rebuff his increasingly desperate attempts to regain her affections. When a blissful reunion is sabotaged by domestic rites of passage through IKEA, Duffy resolves to "become a bachelor boy like Dan--a superstud of seduction, a he-who-will-never-again-come- off-worse-with-the-chicks, a righteous dude committed to anything but commitment." But when even TV's Hottest Totty media-babe Alexa Wells cannot help him become a success as a stand- up--in more ways than one--Duffy begins to wonder if he's given up all for nothing. Gayle has an eye for the soulful romance and wry comedy in the utterly ordinary, and Mr Commitment marries heartfulness and hilarity with a yearning that stops comfortably short of the sentimental. --Rachel Holmes

Advantages: Great storyline, good author, brill characters Disadvantages: None , book doesn't last long enough

It's not until Duffy sees Mel with ROB1 ( it's not a typo, read it and you will see!) , that he begins to realise how much he does love her and how much he wants to be with her .
His brief experience with Alexa , "TV's Hottest Totty" , which didn't make him happy , told him that he loved Mel . Mel has just received some news that will change both their lives forever , but will they get back together ? They both know they love each other , but is it too late for Duffy , has he ruined the chance of being with "The One " ?
This book is brilliant , Mike Gayle has all the ingredients of a book aimed at women . It's very strange to find a male writer working in this genre ,especially doing it so well ! This book is exactly showing what is "wrong" with the twentysomething male in a great easy to follow style. This is better told than ever before , anything you need to know about men is in this book, you will be pleasantly suprised. They are not all bad !
Mike Gayle used to be an agony uncle , and writes freelance for among others FHM and Cosmopolitan. Previous to this his first book was the chart topping "My Legendary Girlfriend" .
Advantages: Laugh out loud funny Disadvantages: Some of the characterisation feels a little contrived.
If you've ever paused to take a good look around in Ikea, you can see it. Couples looking tense and irritable, gesticulating towards whichever bit of furniture has come to symbolise whatever problem their relationship might face. I've been there too, and while for Duffy and Mel it's a wardrobe the fulfills this role, I can remember getting equally et up about a small desk.
So, Duffy and Mel realise that they have commitment problems, or at least ... ...leap, but Duffy, still temping and waiting for his big break into the world of comedy, is still happier at home with flatmate Dan, and obsessing about toast. This leads to a classic will they - won't they situation, with a fair few surprises along the way.
This is a funny book, and captures well the ups and downs of that point in a relationship where it's been too long to walk away, but equally you're not sure where to go from here. We grow to vare ...

Advantages: Funny, easy to read, true to life, page turner, written from character's perspective Disadvantages: None, I love this book!
It been a while since I read this book, and it is the first of Mike Gayle's books that I read, I have to say though, it really stuck in my mind and I remember thinking that it was one of the best books I had ever read, mainly because at the time the situation was very close to my heart!
It's about a 28 year old guy called Duffy who know's that Mel ( his girlfriend) is the one for him, but things like trips to IKEA and dinner parties, baby talk and ... ...down begin to scare him. Is he able to get over his fears and become Mr Commitment? You will have to read it and find out.
This is a really funny book, and it is written from the perspective of Duffy and not in a third person tense which I always love, as you can really get into the character more if they are telling the story. It is easy to read, light hearted, and so true to life on so many levels. It actually made me laugh out loud on several ...

Advantages: Funny - Bridget Jones for boys - Not as camp as that sounds Disadvantages: You may end up proposing to a long-term girlfriend! Be warned!!!
Okay, first things first. This book is pretty much Bridget Jones for the boys. Its about growing up, realising you can't stay in the pub forever, and that eventually you'll have to take some repsonsibility in your life one day.
On the other hand, the light at the end of this magnificent tunnel of a book, is that all this could be possible and acheived without having to give up your best mate, or the pub, or the ambition to do something different, ... ...to IKEA and be good at DIY!
I like this book. It is written in an easy style - as many of this authors work are. It lets you smile and laugh at situations that you casn identify with rather than trying to batter you with witty one-liners. And its less than 400 pages i.e. good holiday read!
I could identify with all the major characters and found them likeable and was able to empathise with them. In fairness it does help that I'm a similar age to ...

Advantages: A brilliant book, with a lovable min character Disadvantages: None
Mr Commitment, when I first started reading this, it reminded me alot of my partner, its been 8 yrs and he is still on the road to non commitment too . . . I think that is probably what got me hooked in the first place, the similarities to my own relationship problems and the fact that Ben Duffy (the main character of the book) was so "real" I could believe he was an actual person.
Right storyline, we start off with Ben Duffy (known to all as Duffy) ... ...job whilst he tries to break into the world of comedy. He lives in a flat with his mate Dan, while his long suffering girlfriend Mel waits for him to finally get around to proposing. Finally Mel takes matters into her own hands and preposes to Duffy, who reacts in a typical bloke affraid of commitment way and tries to find any alternative to "Death do us part". They argue and Duffy spends the next nine days trying to get Mel to talk to him whilst ...

Advantages: An hilarious piece of writing!!! Disadvantages:
Once into this book, you will be committed to finish reading it! The book detailing Duffy's love for Mel vs. his fear of commitment is a hilarious piece of literature on romance. It is definitely one of the best pieces of modern fiction to see the light of day!
The character's feelings and emotions are superbly displayed in their interactions with the other characters and their own personal behaviour.
The whole story is highly believable and could ...

The characters are believable and this helps you to feel for them as they go through lifes obstacles.
An excellent book that I can highly recommend, I believe that this book is even better that MikeGayles previous books MrCommitment and My Legendary Girlfriend, and they in themselves were hard acts to follow. ...
Advantages: Very funny Disadvantages: The print makes your eyes go a bit fuzzy
Tenerife for 7.20 euros but in case you don't want to travel that far it is on amazon for £5.59.
The cover is very bright and catches your eye, it is blue and yellow and has a picture of two egg cups.
MikeGayle has also written My legendary girlfriend, Mrcommitment and Turning thirty.
To be honest I don't think this book is going to set the world on fire but if you just fancy an easy read this could be the book for you......happy reading. ...
Advantages: Great holiday read, funny, modern, perfect for a Mike Gayle fan Disadvantages: Bit predictable
I've become a huge fan of MikeGayle's since reading MrCommitment, and I've pretty much had "the latest MikeGayle book" etched at the top of my christmas list for the past few years!
I literally finished this latest offering by lunch time on boxing day, it really is one of those books that you don't want to put down because you really want to know what's going to happen next.
The story in brief is:
Jim and Alison meet in uni, after initial reservations eventually get together, seem like the perfect couple until it suddenly ends (was a bit too sudden for my liking to be honest, felt that it didn't seem too realistic, but you may think otherwise), go off and continue on with their seperate lives, then the cat that they owned together dies, bringing them back into each others lives again, bringing back all the memories....and you ...
