**Who is Mr Kipling?** Well, Mr Kipling is - would you believe - a fictional character. That's right, we've been conned. The man, whose face you never quite saw in the adverts, was a fraud. An imposter. Yet Mr Kipling is the brand leader in the cake market, a position it first held almost 30 years ago, in 1976. Why is this? Apparently, it's mostly due to his (I'll keep up the pretence for a while longer) commitment to developing new recipes, always with the hallmark of a 'home-baked' taste.

Mr Kipling's exceedingly good cakes offer the promise of being as good as home-baked. In 1976 Mr Kipling became brand leader in the cake market, a position it still holds today about 30 years later.
**What's a Lemon Slice?** Well, according to the packaging it's a 'lemon sponge with lemon water icing'. And well, that's a fairly decent description if you ask me.
They come in a box of six and are twin-wrapped (see photo) which makes them perfect for lunchboxes and picnics and the like. Be careful though, if they find their way to the bottom of your bag then they will probably end up getting rather squished. Still, this is a handy new form of packaging as it keeps the slices fresher.
The outer packaging is quite distinctive and you shouldn't have too much trouble locating these (providing of course that they haven't run out!) You're looking for a bright yellow box - reddy-brown on the back with black writing: 'Mr Kipling - Exceedingly Good - 6 Lemon Slices'. There's a picture of a lemon slice on the side, best before date on one of the ends, and an assortment on information on the back.
**How do they taste?** Ah yes, I need to talk about the taste. Oh dear, I didn't really think this through did I? Oh go on then, if I must - I'll try one for you.
The slices are a good size, approximately 8cm in length, 3cm wide and 2cm in height. That's very approximate as I accidently ate them before I could get my ruler out...sorry.
My favourite bit is the icing, I'm not really a fan of just sponge and I think that there is just the perfect thickness of icing on these. I've been buying these for quite a few years now and the thickness never varies that much - sometimes a pair of slices will have more icing because the icing goes over the ends of the slice too but the thickness is always fairly constant. The icing is white in colour, and lemon flavour, and there is yellow drizzled across the icing. I'm not quite sure what this is, but it's also lemon flavour and very nice indeed.
As you bite into the slice the icing gives you just that little something to bite into, which is nice and adds a different texture to the light, airy, fluffy one of the sponge. Eating the sponge on its own, I notice that is a nice sponge, for someone who doesn't like them all that much I can eat this on its own. There's a very subtle taste of lemon in the sponge, but the main lemon flavour comes from the icing. Putting the icing into my mouth I notice it melts and dissolves on my tongue which is really nice. I'm left with a lemony zing in my mouth, but this fades after a minute or two.
Two slices is more than enough and I think that twin-wrapping them was a good idea. If I had an entire box of six open maybe I would be tempted to have more than two, and I think then you just ruin it. Having just one on its own is nice - so the twin-wrapping makes them nice to share too.
I have tried other brands of lemon slices, but I just can't put my finger on it - they're just not Mr Kipling's. And so I've never had them again.
**And what's the damage?** Something this good just has to be packed full of calories, right? Well per serving (which is one slice apparently) there are 120 calories. You could burn that off with 20 minutes dancing, 1 hour 20 minutes worth of driving...a one minute kiss burns off 26 calories, so that means....about 5 minutes worth of kissing, make it six - just to be sure... ; )
The ingredients are well set-out and easy to read, as is the nutritional information which is per serving and per 100g as you normally find on food packaging. I won't list this all of this information as it would take up half of the review and not be all that useful. Instead I shall just give you the following information:Dietary Information:
Suitable for Vegetarians: yes Suitable for Vegans: no Suitable for Halaal: no
Free from Milk: no
Free from Egg: no
Free from Gluten: no
Free from Nut: trace
Free from Soya: no
Where I've marked a * where this information is marked explicitly on the packaging, as this table was obtained from the Mr Kipling website. I'm sure that a vegan would be able to look at the packaging and ascertain that this product is not suitable for them, but this is not mentioned explicitly. The product also contains no artificial colours.
**How long will they last?** If I find out you've got them, then I'd give them a shelf life of about 10 minutes. Seriously though, providing that you store them, as they suggest, flat in a cool dry place they will last just under three weeks. A box we bought on the 22nd July has a best before date of the 11th August.
They do need to be stored somewhere cool, the icing starts to melt sort of and they aren't as fresh-tasting. I don't think I've ever stored them in the fridge but I find that they taste best when you've kept them somewhere cool and dry.
**Price and Availability** You can buy these treats from supermarkets, corner shops and the like. We get ours from Tesco for £1.06 I believe (though sometimes they're 2 for £1.60). I found them online retailing for £1.69 for a box of 6 at www.britishcornershop.co.uk or for £1.99 at www.britsuperstore.com.
There are plenty of other slices available in the Mr Kipling range, so maybe if lemon isn't to your taste, you'll find something else that is!
**Contact Information** www.mrkipling.co.uk is the website (this has recently been updated and contains much less information than it used to - however you can obtain some information about Mr Kipling's product, history and future plans by downloading a pdf file (1.3MB) from the site)

THE LOOK, SMELL & TASTE
These lemon slices look soooo perfect; they are made of sponge that has a lemon twang to it and have very lemony flavored icing on the top, the icing is white with yellow diagonal lines.
There is a very very slight smell of lemon went you unwrap a tray of two lemon slices, but if you actually pick one up and smell it, it is like heaven, they smell of sugar and lemons ... ...eat and share. Well-done Mr. Kipling!
VALUE FOR MONEY
These are probably about average price for small cakes; a pack will cost some where between £1 and £2 depending on where you shop. Mr. Kipling does tend to be slightly more expensive than stores similar own brands, but I think they are worth it, you can really taste the quality. ...

Advantages: Beautiful, light, fluffy sponge, which melts in your mouth like a dream. Disadvantages: too many calories for my liking.
I love Mr. Kipling cakes, especially the fancies, strawberry sundaes, bakewell slices……alright, I love them all! So I thought I’d give these a try.
* Packaging *
You get 6 slices in the one box, all packaged in twos which is handy if your taking them to work, or on a picnic. But once you’ve opened and eaten the one, you feel compelled to eat the other. Well, it’d only get stale and thrown away wont it? So you may as well. That’s my excuse anyway.
... ...front and sides have a picture of the actual slice with a piece broken off, leaving a trail of delicious looking crumbs that I’d happily lick off the floor. Urmmm, sorry. I think I revealed too much there. :o)
Anyway, it also has a clear plastic window, so that you can see what your getting. All you can see though, is the iced topping, but that still looks good.
The back has the usual nutritional information, but if you’re going to eat two, then ...

Advantages: Lemony yummmmmmm!!!! Disadvantages: High in sugar and sat fat, unhealthy
Mr Kipling are well known for being the best cake makers in Britain. Their products can be found in every supermarket and most corner shops as well because they are so popular. They have a huge selection of different cakes and pies to chose from and therefore it can often take a while to chose which one you want. I've tried a lot of Mr Kipling products but I don't eat them very often because of their main drawback which is their price. Every once ... ...One of my favourites are Mr Kipling Lemon Slices, this is because I absolutely love Lemon flavoured cakes.
I am very happy to say that Tesco currently have a special offer on for most of the Mr Kipling range, you can currently get two boxes of these for £2.30 which is a great deal seeing as they normally cost £1.37 each so that's a saving of 44p! The offer lasts until 09/09/2008 so make sure you get some before it runs out. I bought 2 boxes today ...

I'm sure that most people have a weak spot for something, and unfortunately, mine is for cakes, chocolate and all the things you shouldn't really eat. I am particularly fond of Mr Kipling Lemon Slices and this is what I shall be reviewing today.
Firstly, let me tell you a little bit about the Mr Kipling brand.
The company itself has been around since 1967. It is a major manufacturer of cakes, including apple pies, French Fancies, Lemon Slices and ... ...for the slogan, 'exceedingly good' cakes. Since its humble beginnings, the Kipling brand has established itself as a major household name, and is now the UK's biggest maker of cakes and the market leader. It is probably as popular now as it was 20 years ago and continues to grow both in size and popularity.

Advantages: Tastes Delicious, Light And Not Overfilling Disadvantages: Plenty Of Sugar And Calories
When it comes to Cakes Mr Kipling is a name that I have come to trust and during a recent trip to Asda I purchased a packet of Mr Kipling Lemon Slices. It's been quite a while since I last tried these and my memory of what they tasted like was a little bit hazy with time, but I do recall that I liked them a lot, so I guessed that it was about time that I treated my taste buds to another Mr Kipling Lemon Slice experience.
THE PRODUCT
I paid £1.04 ... ...in a cardboard box which is predominantly yellow in colour with the Mr Kipling name clearly emblazoned across the front of it.
Inside the box the individual slices are twin wrapped in a cellophane wrapper for freshness. I am not sure why they are wrapped together in pairs but it did mean that I had to put two slices in my lunchbox rather than just one so I guess that it is some clever marketing ploy on behalf of Mr Kipling just to get us all to ...

Advantages: A nice, fresh tasting cake. Disadvantages: High in calories and sugars.
, filling and frosting separately I found it was not so much the sponge that had the lemon taste, but more the other two elements. The frosting really melts in the mouth and has a sharp, citrus kick. The buttercream is delicious, also lemony but not so sharp a flavour as the frosting. The combination of the three elements of the cake was good, but I would not say outstanding. It is not a cake that I could eat a lot of. With so much butter I would find it too rich.
The only other make of lemon cake I eat often enough to compare the two is MrKiplingLemonSlices. I would say this Sainsbury's cake is better than the MrKipling's because it is less sweet, the sponge is less dense and the taste is sharper. Given a choice between these two brands I would have to pick the Sainsbury's one.

As anybody who owns a TV will know, it is often claimed that MrKipling makes exceedingly good cakes. This claim is also extended to the packaging on any MrKipling products.
Well, I have to say that overall I have to agree with this statement, having just devoured a gorgeous MrKiplinglemon cake, however when it comes to Country Slices I just can't agree.
Its been many years since I had eaten a Country Slice. To me they conjured up memories of tea and cakes with my grandma, and at the time they were my cake of choice. My grandma died when I was 6/7 and so no more Country Slices passed my lips...until just before christmas that is.
Whilst browsing the tesco website as I placed my usual monthly grocery shopping order I saw that MrKipling cakes etc were on special offers, of 2 for £2 or 2 for £1.50, depending on the cakes you ...
