With the cupboards bare I was in desperate need of getting to the shops to find something to put in them. Though with a throbbing headache I was in to mood to even get out of bed, let alone leave the house! So I had asked my Dad if he would nip to the shops for me, and thankfully he said yes. When he asked what I wanted I simply replied, “Anything!”. I couldn't care less what he bought, as long as there was something in the cupboard. When he returned, I unpacked the carrier bag and found a new item I hadn't seen before – Mr Kipling Toffee Apple Bake wells.
I have been eating Kipling cakes most of my life. As a child I adored the mini battenbergs, and as I grew older I sampled various other delights Mr Kipling had to offer. Mr Kipling is probably one of the most loved confectionery manufactures around – his products are available so widely. There is such a great range of cakes to choose from, and in the range there are a few bakewell options. The most common one, which is also made by other bands too, is the cherry bakewell. That one I have loved since I was a child too, so whenever I see a new bakewell option I am always keen to give it a go. I'd not too long ago tried a normal toffee bakewell
by a different manufacturer, so I was quite looking forward to trying this one.
First of all, the packaging for this product is simply gorgeous! As with the rest of the Kipling cakes, it comes in a cardboard box. It has an elegant golden brown colour to its background – a very rich shade that stands out brilliantly, and somehow reminds me of Christmas (I saw festive mince pies in the store the other day, and it's only September!). On the front you can see the Mr Kipling logo clearly, which always assures you that you are paying for a top quality product. Next to this there is a picture of the toffee apple bakewell. It looked simply divine, baked to perfection. I couldn't wait to give it a try!
Inside the cardboard packaging you will find six bakewells sitting in a plastic tray, with a plastic cover over them. Peeling back the plastic, I plucked a bakewell out of the tray. I was quite surprised at the size of the bakewell. It was quite a little bit thicker than the loved cherry option, however it was a lot smaller in diameter. I wasn't sure what to make with this – did it mean there would be more filling? The pastry was quite a golden colour, and at the bottom there was a darker coloured brown rim which I imagined would hold whatever was inside. The top of the bakewell was a delicious toffee colour, and indeed held a layer of toffee icing. On the very tip top there was a little toffee square. From the bakewell came a mild toffee scent too, making it more tempting by the second.
Unable to wait any longer, I nibbled at the pastry. As this crumbled into my mouth, I concluded that this dry part was just the same as that of the cherry bakewell. Though I was not exactly disappointed – I hadn't expected anything else. Biting into the toffee layer, I was surprised at how soft and sticky this was. The white icing on the cherry bakewell was shiny and hard and cracked as you bit into it. However this delicious layer allowed your teeth to sink right through without scarring it, filling your mouth with a deliciously sweet toffee sensation. The little square on the top was just as soft, and had a gorgeous sweet taste to match. Inside the bakewell at the bottom, there is a little layer of what I thought was apple purée, as when I bit into it, it tasted of sweet apple. However I discovered after reading over the packaging that its is actually a layer of toffee sauce. The sponge that is in between the toffee sauce and the icing is the part that provides the delicious apple taste. It was a wonderful combination of both taste and texture, and each bite filled me with a warm and sugary sweet sensation. However by the end of just one bakewell, I started to feel a little ill. I think these are a tad too sweet if you are not able to handle such foods. Though it does not put me off them. I later tried another one, this time warmed up in the microwave for twenty seconds. I found the pastry remained quite cold, but the toffee layers and the apple sponge were piping hot and oozing with sticky sweet deliciousness. Needless to say, I felt quite ill after that too, but my how it was scrumptious!
Give the fact that these are incredibly sweet, I wasn't expecting these to be at all healthy! On the front of the cardboard packaging the nutritional inforrmation is printed in a little strip, making it clear and easy to read. It turns out that each bakewell contains 194 calories and 16.5g sugars as well as 8.9g fat. In terms of calories, that is not too bad, considering you get yoghurts that have more calories than that! Though the fat and sugar levels are a little steep. This is definitely something to enjoy now and again as a treat, and not to be wolfed down box after box!
I have checked how much these cost since purchase and it turns out they were £1.50. Now that is quite reasonable for Mr Kipling cakes, as many can cost well over £2! Though in general it is quite a lot of money to be spending on cakes. Again, this is simply another reason to have these now and again only. Though as a benefit this high price will mean that you are less tempted to buy too many and overindulge!
These toffee apple bakewells are simply delicious. They are definitely unique little cakes, unlike any I have tried before. Although they get a little sickly sweet after a while, one as a treat goes down wonderfully with a cup of tea! If you are looking for something a bit special then these are definitely worth a try!
